For road racing, clipless is the way to go. If you are not racing, but a casual or daily rider, go with toe clips. The up pull you can do, for quick starts like crossing streets or hills, is a big advantage over a platform pedal. Plus, you will develop those hamstrings.

I've never had any of the problems you mentioned with toe clips, even on my 59 mile "ride your age" birthday ride, or my 50 mile ride to the St. Louis Archgrounds (which left my legs feeling like rubber for two days, but my feet felt fine.) So, I was trying to figure out why you and I have such different experiences with toe clips, and it struck me, you're riding a single-speed, so you probably do a lot more "mashing" than I do, while I tend to toodle up hills and into headwinds with my low-low granny-gear, and always just pick a gear where I'm spinning instead of mashing. Thus I'm never putting sustained pressure on the bottom of my foot.
I'd like to try clipless pedals at least once, but the combination of squeezing every penny till it squeaks, and my odd size and shape feet means that finding an affordable setup that actually fits my feet comfortably, is too much of a hassle.

toe clips and straps- I use All city Quad with their straps- with an MKS campy copy the nice wide opening makes it super easy to get my foot in and out for red lights, and i can wear whatever shoes I want. it also makes the bike L'Eroica legal. which is a bonus.

I had clipless for years and went with toe clips and straps on my new bike mainly because I didn't like walking around in the cleats. I've never had a problem slipping out or getting uncomfortable on long rides with the clips. Plus the up stroke is still available. For me it's been more comfortable all around. I've thought about MTB clipless but haven't yet convinced myself to try them. Just a matter of personal preference.
    Nice video.

Best info I have found, been researching for 2 months. Been using toe clips for ever and was considering clipless for my next bike. I'm going to stick with toe clips, having had both hip joints replaced I can't afford additional risk of a fall with learning clipless.
    Thanks for the video. 👍

For commuting, I ride with toe clips and tennis shoes. When I ride for fitness/distance, I ride with the Look style clipless. For commuting, I want the flexibility to wear any kind of shoe. I agree with you in the video, when I ride any kind of distance, I want the advantages of a clipless pedal. I have found the Look style are better for leverage and comfort, but the suck for walking.

Been riding mountain bikes since 1992. Most of the time, I have worn toe clip/strap combo. Never a had a single problem. Only issue is you need to remember to tighten the screws on them occasionally (they do loosen up like everything else on a bike). Comfortable. Secure. Cheap. Wear any shoe you want. No issues.
On the other hand...I've tried flats (with great pedals and shoes) and I've turned my ankle on them. I've tried clipless and had them either not release or release too well.
Conclusions I've reached: 1) Clipless is best suited for riding flat terrain, long distances, and balls-out fast 2) Toe clips and straps coupled with an e-mountain bike is heaven :)

I use Zulu straps but wear Shimano XC1 shoes - so I get the benefits of the flat sole & straps without the fear of unclipping from cleats. The chunkier soles also help grip into my pedals whereas I thought the road versions wouldn’t. Plus I can walk in them like a normal shoe if I feel. Works so far for me 🤷🏻‍♂️ it’s a good middle ground I find - I got this idea from watching track cyclists.

I have purchased a Clipless Pedal and Shoe set, yet I have to attach it to a machine; this is because I tend to put functionality off the bike above functionality on the bike, as I tend to spend more time jumping off the bike then I do on. For this reason I have for years used Toe Clips and Straps, although I tend to have my Straps loosely attached as the only power I need is the power when I push down. Using Toe Clips and Straps allows me, as you say, to wear any footwear I choose without the need for my footwear to be bike specific.
That said, I do ride 100/150 mile Charity rides so do have a Road Machine that I use for those events; and, so, plan to have my Clipless Pedals attached to my Event Bike. As you say, it all depends on what type of riding you do.
Incidentally, I don't ride a Fixie but a multi-geared bike but still find Toe Clips and Straps indispensible.

Now I know to save my money and work on fitness and a more aero position. Funny thing was, I got a real gain out of ditching my varifocals. I feel so much more comfortable on drops.

Went back to toe clips and never looked back. If you don't want to deal with Craigslist there are lots of Thrift Stores that will take your donation.

I switched to LOOK KEO MAX 2 pedals with the fizik R5 Uomo shoes on my fixed bike. I have ridden clipless for about 3 years now. I switched primarily for the more efficient and better power transfer as well as comfort. My feet got tore up when I rode with straps, the rigid bike shoes saves my arches some pain. I keep shoes at work for my commute.

Flat right now but I have at least 1000 miles on a bike that had clips and straps. Loved that bike! As soon as I can I'm moving back to clips on my new daily driver. My average ride is less than 15 miles (for now) and clips work well enough for that. Thanks

If you don't care about "pedal efficiency" and racing, then toe clips are a better way to go (IMAO). Despite the hype and marketing for other stuff, toe clips/straps are just more reliable and predictable in my experience. Just set them up right (don't cinch them down tight) and forget 'em. Yes, they are out of fashion now...

@Frank Rizzo - I just made the conversion to clipless and wonder why it took me so long. Haha, it gets everyone man, when I was a noob it got me in Oxford city centre, a red double decker bus pulled past me at a red so I couldn’t see the lights, put on the brakes, couldn’t un-clip and just leisurely and slowly fell like an absolute melon, will never forget it. I’m used to SPDs now, am well aware of the benefits, but consciously choose clips and straps nowadays, they offer everything I need. Can’t see me going back. The ability to just wear my Nikes all the time, is probably all the reasoning I need haha. Stay safe 👍

Toe clips and straps have another advantage not mentioned. If you accidentally unclip while you wre doing a sprint, you will crash badly. My experience with clipless pedals is precisely this fact. I disagree when you say you cant ride for long hours with toe clips and straps when I really feel more comfortable and even more secure. More people ride clipless because its cool and quite efficient. In toe clips and straps you have to have a good pedal wth good bearings. In conclusion. With the straps I could tighten them on my shoe and this is more secure than clipless. And great performance.

No the point of clipless is not just for being secured in. The reason for Clipless pedals is to bring up the down pedal by being locked in. In normal pedals each stroke has to reach the 2 pm position in order to bring up the other pedal. With clipless each leg bring ups the down pedal due to being able to push it up because of being clipped in. This is the biggest advantage of clipless this is why it is more efficient.

  • @Szergej33

I bought a set of SPD shoes and Shimano M520 pedals after riding with straps for 2 years. (With straps i rode breakless, but now i put on a front brake). Though my pedal is set to the tightest, highest unclip tension, it often just unclips when i try to skid, which is fucking dangerous. I pay attention not to twist my ankle while skidding, but it also unclips when my foot is held straight with no twist. I am not using the cleats which came with the pedals, but a set of "better quality" Shimano cleats that are on the list of recommended cleats in the pedals' manual so it should not be incompatible.
So... I see many people with SPD and brakeless, what the hell should i do not to unclip all the tiime? Now i rarely even skid because of the fear of unclipping, while with straps I never had to fear if i would unclip:S

    • @Me_ThatsWho
      @Me_ThatsWho 6 років тому

Agreed. I had the same problem popping out of Shimano clipless pedals with the multidirectional release cleats when jumping on my mtb. It just pissed me off. In my opinion, toe clips/straps (or even toe straps alone) are just more reliable, period. I'll take that over clipless even if they are less efficient in terms of pedal stroke... who cares, I don't race...

I haven't had comfort or security issue while riding with my toe clips. I was thinking about finding a pair of clipless shoes I can walk in but it sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth, since I love my clips. They tend to ruin my shoes though. I ride stompers. was using clips for a few months, it was kinda uncomfortable and annoying on the red lights and the benefits were not clear (I mostly commute around 20km per day). ~20yrs on SPD's, everyday. flats are ok but feel backward step unless your riding technical trails/snow or have shoes that are not cycling specific, that's why i use Shimano touring pedal, got my bases covered. Clipped, well i grew up with them & they tend to 'lock' your foot in place when tight, which can have a detrimental impact on your knees, if the straps not that tight why bother, ride flats...spd's have small amount of 'float' to allow a more natural stroke & thus reduce knee problems.

Hi Zach ! I've added fat straps to my 50/50's because I ran into toe to fender/tire clearance issues with clips. My bike is a Caadx which by my research , have shorter frame measurements. I like straps and indeed have fallen 2wice thus far lol I'm open to clip-less. Should I ditch both ideas and just simply ride the old fashioned way? or do you have any recommendations of shoes, systems etc because I really enjoy the extra efficiency of being "strapped" "locked" in. It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

I bought new toe-clips for my peugeot but they doesn't match with the pedals because my bike has over 30 years. I don't really want to change pedals because I usually ride something around 20kms a day and don't need the whole clipless system. I'll probably have to buy original toe clips :/ Nice vidya

What about platform pedals with straps? I cant find any comparation between this 3 types of foot retention... Im currently using straps, but I thinking about buying clips, (I love the look) any advice?

What about regular basic no clip pedals?

I ride flats, and in terms of foot retention, just get a pair of five10 shoes. Your foot will not shift from the pedal until you want it too.

I don't ride either. I use a pair of Adidas turf footballing (soccer) shoes - the kind with the knobbed soles - and a skeleton cage platform pedal. the cleats of the shoes "hook" into the pedal cage and form a fairly snug interlock that allows me to pull back on my upstroke and push forward through the down stroke. I paid $80=tax US for the shoes new and $17+tax for the pedals themselves...
though, the DZRs look really flash and I am seriously considering a pair now.
do they work with Crank Brother's egg-beater pedals?

I personally ride with just straps. Ive never seem to needed toe clips. I live where there isnt really any hills. Plus i sometimes use slippers to ride around, so i may never get toe clips.
Unless there is a benefit to have toe clips, probbably wont get them.

clipless is the way to go. I'd stick to mtb on fixed gear unless you want full power.

for a hybrid i would advise the basic shimano mtb clips there 2 sided and easy to clip into and dont cost the earth

Platform with $1 dollar straps jumping all day the holes and rocks on the streets no problems. Some days i ride more than 40 miles on my bike because of work. It can be a pain but you get used to it.

Toe clips win. I wanna look like a bro on a bike, not a try hard pro. I wanna wear and walk in normal sneakers, not some weird cycling specific shoes.
