  • The Motorrad Rider takes you through his likes and dislikes with a long term review of the BMW Black Aluminium Luggage on his R1200GS Adventure and is a follow-on from the unboxing of the Black Luggage he did some 18 months ago.
    He also shows how to remove and attach both the top box and the panniers so that those who have had no experience with the luggage, can gauge for themselves how easy they are to use.
    The panniers and top box can be ordered from your local BMW Motorrad dealership using these part numbers:
    Top Box: 77432455447
    Pannier (left): 77412455446
    Pannier (exhaust): 77412455445
    Back Rest Set for top box: 77448546808
    BMW handles for luggage: 77498543224

    Old and senile doesn’t work well with a beast of an Adventure bike. Bike and panniers are beautiful. Well done.

    Thanks again for an informative video.
    I never remove the panniers with load in them. I always have a proper waterproof bag in each of the panniers. I carry the load to and from my home/hotel or whatever in them. Unfourtnately my panniers takes on some water from time to time.
    Looking forward to new interesting videos. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

      I use my BMW waterproof bags in both panniers and top box. With the additional BMW handles on all the boxes, it allows me to attach the bags to the outside of the boxes and gain substantial waterproof additional luggage carrying capabilities when (if) required.
      I have travelled in torrential rain for hours numerous times and have never had any of my units let water in. Have you checked the seals for any grit or damage? Just a thought. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment.

    Thanks for this review! I'm a bit surprised at the load capacity on each case, I would have figured they'd be able to deal with a bit more weight. I guess when you consider 3 pieces, it is a good amount of weight.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  3 роки тому +1

      The rating is conservative to say the least but I can understand it due to legal limitations and potential ramifications. You only have to look at The Long Way Round at what the boxes can actually take. Most of us strap extra bags and luggage to the tops of the boxes with absolutely no problems, the only issue getting the additional tonnage off the side stand. They really are fantastic units and have never let me down so if you're in the market for a set, I'd say go for it. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment.

    Just fitted the other, off-side, case, and was immediately reminded of your points about weight. Even when empty the panniers noticeably alter the balance of the bike on the centre stand.
    So I wondered how loaded panniers affect handling out on the road.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  2 роки тому

      I try to get the two panniers weight as equal as possible but don’t stress to much about getting it exact. On the road, I personally, don’t notice much, if any difference to the handling, be it on a twisting mountain road or freeway riding. I rarely take my boxes off so the extra kilos of luggage seems to make little impact on the handling as I’m used to riding with the weight of the panniers and top box.

    Thank you. Very helpful.
    However, I am having problems fitting the BMW aluminium panniers to my r1200gs adventure.
    Dealer said they are the right ones but I cannot close the lock when I try to mount them.
    Possibly it is the alignment issue you mentioned in the video.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  2 роки тому

      Now, I trust the dealer clarified with you that you have to have the bike’s ignition key in the pannier mounting clamp lock and the key in the “unlock” position. You then close the mounting clamp completely with the key still in the mounting clamp lock (maintaining the “unlock” position of the key) and then and only then, turn the key to the “lock” position and then remove the key. DO NOT FORCE THE KEY or it could end up breaking the fob 😳. Let me know how you go and if this solves the issue. Good luck and thanks for asking the question.

    Hi. First thanks for this detailed and informative video. However my biggest concern is whether the topcase is ok for a fullface helmet (L). As far as I know, the helmet does not fit into the case so you need to carry it whereever you go in your hands. I’d appreciate if you cam clarify this. Again thanks and regards. Hakan.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  Рік тому

      Firstly, thanks for the kind words and watching the video. Dismiss your concerns about a full face helmet fitting in the topbox. I use Arai XD-4’s and Shoei Neotec 2 modulars in XL and both fit in the box with room to spare. With a large I see no problem at all (unless you’re running one of those massive Schuberth C4 or C5 modulars).
      The BMW boxes are made by Touratech but I have no knowledge of the Evo X.
      Hope that helps. Stay safe.

      Hi Tony, the luggage (2 panniers & top box with the 8 locks keyed alike by BMW) is around 3 1/2 grand. I added the genuine waterproof bags, genuine handles and paint protection which brought the price up to just shy of 5K. Provided I don’t damage them and assuming they fit, they will be going on my next GSA whenever that may be. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  3 роки тому +1

      It is one of two tank bags that I own, one small that you saw and one large expandable one that are part of the Givi Tank Lock system. Both of the bags are fitted with 12v and USB hubs using the Givi system (which I install in my video “Unboxing and installation of GIVI USB/12V Power Hub and Power Supply Cable for Tank Bags). They fit using bike specific locking rings that fit to the tank filler ring, work really well and I cannot recommend the system highly enough.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  3 роки тому +1

      For me they are fine. I travel solo so can’t really answer about two up. I imagine it would depend on length of your trip, to where you’re heading and if you usually pack “lightly” or take everything including “the kitchen sink” 😉.
      The case liners that I use are the genuine BMW ones. They are unique for each box as each box is a different size and interior profile. They are also very strong, waterproof and can cinch down on the lid of their respective boxes to extend your luggage capacity if required. They are available from your BMW Motorrad dealer and IMO, worth the expense.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching the video and asking your questions.

      The protective film that was used all over the bike, panniers and top box, is a product manufactured in South Korea and was supplied and fitted by OziShield ( www.ozishield.com.au ) here in Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺. They supply kits and all the required equipment to do a very thorough DIY job so have a look at the website and drop them an email. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and for asking your question. The entire box is constructed of aluminium and welded (very neatly I might add) on the seams. The corners are reinforced with a type of fibre reinforced PE (polyethylene) and the lid seal mount and seat are of similar material. The frame mounts are of coated steel and are very solid. Hope that helps and stay safe.

    Did you install the protective film yourself? Looks like good stuff, is it glossy or matte?

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  3 роки тому

      No I didn’t do the install myself. When the guys were doing bike and I got them to do the panniers and top box at the same time. They have all the templates on computer and I think, from memory, there is something in the region of 30 separate pieces for the bike and between 4 & 5 for each of the panniers and top box. All fit perfectly.
      The film is made in Korea, matte finish and is so strong and flexible, it is almost beyond belief. The company supplies the template sets so that you can do your own installs and I can let you know the details if you wish.

      First of all, thank you for watching the video and hopefully it was in some way helpful.
      Now onto some details. The part numbers I have listed for the boxes are in deed, current and valid BMW part numbers and are available from numerous locations globally. They (BMW), MAY use different part numbers for certain items depending on safety certification and subsequent labelling etc., and that may be the case for your location. I checked the part numbers that you mentioned and they are also valid but the images displayed in the results, show only the LEFT box (when sitting on the bike) which may add to the confusion (if I am understanding your question correctly?).
      As far as I’m aware, there is no size difference in the different part numbers BUT stand to be corrected if it proves not to be the case. I would make some enquiries with your BMW Motorrad dealers to be sure prior to ordering. I hope that helps a little and again, thanks for watching the video and taking the time to ask the question.

    • @TheMotorradRider
      @TheMotorradRider  4 роки тому +2

      @@nilhirve
      A full face will not fit in the exhaust side due to 'cut-in' for the exhaust. Now the other side (left). My Arai XD-4 helmets in XL would fit but at a very tight squeeze. I have a GoPro mount on the right and a Cardo Bold comms mount to the left on each and even without the mounts, it would be very snug. This is due to the two points where the visor is fixed to the shell protruding ever so subtly. If you had a smaller shell size in the XD-4 than the XL, then I would say yes but certainly confirm first. My Shoei Neotec II will not fit and that is XL. If it helps, all the helmets fit comfortably in the top box with room to spare. Thanks for the great question and hope the answer helps.
