My wife laughed so hard when Robyn said you take plenty of naps, and you said "I'm writing!" I'll lay down to brain storm and my wife will say "Are you taking a nap?' and I say "I'm writing!"
It was really nice meeting you at C2E2, Terry! That Pelikan yellow label ink is the BEST! I used it from age 15... too bad it got reformulated. I agree, the new Pelikan mixture is not as good!! See you again and be well!
Thank you for this. Especially the bit about the brush sizes and getting the point if the brush. I've been using a 3 brush on an A4 size paper and the result is wat too thick.
i have pretty good brush control, but i can never find a single brush that feels right, or holds the ink correctly. hopefully that is fixed with the new brushes i ordered. because they were praised for every medium possible.
Would relentlessly read a Tambi globe-hopping espionage thriller, a dramatic take on the origins of Lilith and Rachel, or an Aunt Libby Romancing the Stone-style jungle caper, but what we need is an epic period-piece about Cleopatra and that curse-ed papyrus! Origins of the universe or detective story. We will pitch in for snacks.
Great tutorial! What’s your process for coloring? Do you hand paint the color or use the computer. If adding color do you do that 1st and then layout the black inking? I haven’t seen many examples of the coloring process other than using a computer.
Most of my comic book covers were colored by another person I hire to do that. I give them finished black ink line art and sometimes some notes on color then they do their painting thing. I tinted the covers to my series Rachel Rising myself to get a muted palette and I did that in Photoshop.
It’s really weird man…my computer died on me like 5 years ago and i’m forced to use traditional media and I ONLY know how to use a brush and brush pens etc because I thought when I was a kid, that all the Conan comics were done with Brush in the 80s. So it just is how I “Ink” even though i’m a constant student. Blue line, lightened up and then brush and then liners for architectural elements and cars. It just feels natural to me.
Terry, I used 14 x 17 as well and my question is why do we have to use 11 x 17 for comics? Is it because of the scanning? Or is it some other reason that I just can’t figure out?
11 x 17 is the ratio for the modern comic size of 6.625 X 10.188 inches. Which is very tall and narrow to my eye. Comics used to be a more sensible ratio with more width but it all changed for reasons of economics.
I am starting to love these videos. However, the sound quality is very bad. I would highly recommend a microphone or something. And perhaps better lighting.

It’s true!
Awesome Tele and Silverface Fender in the background!
Thanks for sharing your inking process with us!

I could watch the inking process all day. I find it so fascinating.
I would love to see a novel tying up all the loose ends in Rachel Rising.
That's a good idea. Thanks!
Terry has published prose before. Check out Molly & Poo if you haven't.
welcone brazil,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, i love your art
Thanks Terry, this is the best overall tutorial on inking I’ve seen 👍

Thin Mints!
I'm looking online and I was wondering if you or anybody has ever tried inking with Asian calligraphy brushes instead of western brushes?
Yes many comic artists. Like, check out Skottie Young.
