    Delightful film there. I recently attended an event at the East Anglia Transport Museum and saw No.1 working. Lovely trolleybus and fasinating vehicles.

    People of a certain age will remember these fantastic buses,fast clean and very comfortable.Such a short sighted decision to rid our streets of these icons of the road.Thanks for showing us the vid,not sure about the music though?

    I can't help noticing that it was now 50 years ago since London's last trolleybus ran!

    Beautiful vid - takes me back to the trolley that ran through Ilford and Manor Park - was it the 663 or 633. Damned dementia. Thanks for posting a sweet vid.

    that right hand turning combined with an overtaking manoeuvre asks a few questions of 3 of the 4 drivers involved LOL
    great clip! :)

    @JollyRodders in those days the harmful effects of diesel engine exhuast fumes were not understood.
    Big mistake... which has helped to cost people their health, even their lives.

    Great film for all us trolleybus buffs, particularly of course the London breed. Like the casual "stroller" risking life and limb at the depot at 2.17! What's the peppy dance tune?

    I'm sure I've seen the indecisive driver at 1:27 recently: he drives a Nissan Micra now, of course...

    @Ben31337l The trolleybus you see in this video was set to replace the trams because the tracks as well as the trams which were coming up to 30 years old, were starting to wear out and needed replacing en-masse. It was alot cheaper to abandon the tracks and replace the trams with trolleybuses. As you can see in the video LUT also had a modern tram built as well.

      Was London United ( was the T for ´trolleybusses’ or for ´transport’?) a separate and private company to London Transport ( which took over all the private companies in 1933) or did it exist before 1933, to be swept up and included with all the others - General, Underground and all the rest - in 1933 for the creation of London Transport?

    There was no test at that time!
    The thing is that the trolleybus would have vastly out-accelerated anything on the roads then, and probably even so today! And they could go, too. I recall enjoying a 60mph ride on one across Mitcham Common when courting! Later model, though.

      @@trevordance5181 Yes, it was. Then I got the 118 bus to Morden where I lived, if memory serves (the bus route, that is, not where I lived!!!)..

    Great video. Wasn't there in the 30s (!), but I went to the school opposite Fulwell Depot (Stanley Road) in the 50s and caught the Trolleybus (667) from King Street Twickenham to King Street Hammersmith in the 50s/60s.

      Born in 1957 I just remember the trolley buses in King St Twick. With the conductor having to replace the gantry pick up. I suspect you went to Latymer Upper school - so did I but they’d certainly long gone by 1968 when I went there

    @Ben31337l Trolleybuses came to an end because they were not considered to be flexible like a diesel powered bus, which could go anywhere it wanted. They didn't need the external infrastructure to provide the power to the bus, such as a power station and substations, overhead wires poles etc and the associated costs of maintaing that infrastructure...So simply put...yes.

  • @Ben31337l
    @Ben31337l 14 років тому

    @JollyRodders That's ironic, because they have bus routes, which tell the busses where to go, and the busses stick to the route.
    But fair enough.

  • @crossleydd42
    @crossleydd42 12 років тому

    Trolleybuses went because:
    Nationalisation of the many electricity companies in 1948 (some municipal, which generated power for trams/trolleybuses & the public) increased power costs. The original overhead & electrical infrastructure, built for trams, was worn out. The trolleybuses were worn out. Roadwork & other road changes caused disruption & re-wiring. Extensions to new estates were costly. The wiring poles incurred wayleave charges. Motor buses were cheaper to run and were more flexible.

    Muito bom este vídeo.
    Não me conformo com esta realidade. Ja exportaram trolebus para o Brasil, pais onde eu moro, e hoje não tem mais trolebus no país.

      No they weren't. They were and still are slower.
      Nothing beats an electric vehicle for acceleration and braking.
