I was nearly 9 when the trolleybuses finished, they fascinated me as they were quiet and smooth and the wiring and junctions were amazing to watch. How laid back and respectable life seemed in those days compared to the lunacy of the 21st century. Everywhere today people want battery buses which are heavy, batteries deteriorate quickly, we should have maintained and improved the trolleybus network even if we had dual mode buses that had batteries for extra flexibility. How ironic that we got rid of trams, then trolleybuses as not cost effective yet here we are in 2024 and it seems everybody wants trams which require not only track but an overhead power supply, how is that economic compared to a trolleybus?
From 1956 I travelled on this route when I went to secondary school, from Carshalton to Sutton until the route became the 154 using RTs. Often late for school as the overhead power system became uncoupled at the sharp corner at the top of Ringstead Road!
The 654 shared a short section of its route in West Croydon with trolleybus route 630 that went all the way from West Croydon to Harlesden. Apart from that the 654 operated independently from any other trolleybus route.
Sutton was designed to be a very grand town back in the day. Some of that old-time grandeur has gone as it has everywhere across the world. BUT much more of that quality remains than Sutton gets credit for: Barclay's Bank Building, St Nicholas Church, Edwardian Police Station, Trinity Church, Sutton Grammar, Sutton High, Freemasons Lodge, All Saints Church Benhilton, Sutton Lodge, Landseer Road Conservation Area, Russetings....the list goes on.
Interesting to see this. Incredible how things have changed, everyone looked so well dressed and so civilised when getting on the bus ! Comparing Sutton then and now is like looking at a completely different country. Such a shame how it has gone down the toilet - where did it all go wrong ?
I'm not a bus spotter but a lovely piece of history. I lived in Sutton (St James road) I can remember shinners with its really ancient dodgy lift, my grand dad worked for the council on the sewage farm & lived in a house on site. My late dad told me that it was situated where the tesco petrol station is on Oldfield's road. Shame it's gone down the pan. I moved out when the morden mosque started taking shape thank god.

Amazing vintage footage of yesterday Sutton.This is the first time I have seen a double decker trolley bus ! A lot of roads nowaday become one way streets.

Thanks I loved this. Back in the 50s we lived in the road that backed onto the Trolly Bus Station. This brought back loads of memories.

People were very tall and thin in those days! Luckily the buses were very tall and narrow too.
Wow. Sutton High St without the Burger King, a different world entirely and one that looks like it had a better transport network as well.

Yes, the 154 was the replacement bus service. The 654 did not go beyond Sutton, though.
