God this stream was really a trip down memory lane, seeing these cutscenes again reminds me how Snake's characterization is so good, and he changed so much between MGS1 and MGS2 but in ways that stay consistent with his personality and what he learned at the end of MGS1, he really grows as a person in ways no other videogame characters do

I've never played MGS2 or MGS1 only 4, 3, 5 (in that order), so I'm so confused why Meryl wants Snake to shoot her? She looks so disappointed when Snake says "I don't like to waste bullets" when she says "You can shoot me if I slow you down," especially since she said "psychotherapy killed my interest in men."

The simplest explanation is that they both know Wolf was using Meryl as bait to draw Snake out. Meryl doesn't want to become a liability, so she asks Snake to shoot her. Another angle is that Meryl is naive and dramatic - she's 18 and has no battle experience, and has romanticized combat and the FOXHOUND unit her whole life. She's eager to prove herself to Snake and says "you can shoot me if I slow you down" without really understanding the weight of that - meanwhile, Snake, who is grizzled and battle-hardened, makes saving Meryl's life his top priority after she gets shot.
The psychotherapy line is maybe also more showboating on Meryl's part, since she has feelings for Snake arguably as early as the Mantis fight (and almost certainly by the end of the game).
