      real heroes sacrifice their lives exposing truth hidden by those who seek power and dominion over humanity. you will always be a follower and a sheeple whose life yearns for the mainstream narrative; for direction from big brother. wake up, get informed and stop believing every thing you hear from television and social media. 40k political commentary; "Church bad. Kill the baddies before they kill us."
    Battletech political commentary; "Trying to act like war is clean and concise is exactly what drives soldiers insane. Technology doesn't change this, it just lets the politicians act like progress is being made."

    • @ancientofdays8644
      @ancientofdays8644 3 роки тому +13

      Probably cause 40k aint a political focused setting while Battletech is? Not to mention that if you want some commentary from 40k that is not actually the commentary.

    • @Ungantor
      @Ungantor 3 роки тому +31

      @@ancientofdays8644 Maybe 'lacks subtext' would be a better way of putting it. You have to dig pretty deep into 30k novels to find stories without an immediately defined 'good guy' and 'bad guy'... I don't think it is bad writing per say, more like writers being forced to stay extremely 'on brand' at all times. It's fair to say that BT has a bunch of mary sues and bad ideas of it's own, but stuff that doesn't fit the mould is not immediately retconned and forgotten about.

    • @ancientofdays8644
      @ancientofdays8644 3 роки тому +20

      @@Ungantor Yeah, my whole point was that 40k is supposed to be ''FUCK YEAH, LETS GO MURDER STUFF'' Literature while Battletech is more of political fuckery and morality of warfare literature(With a lot of FUCK YEAH, MECHS ARE AWESOME). Mind, I prefer the Battletech way but I also think that it's kind of useless/pointless/unfair to try and compare them since they try to achieve completely different things.

    • @Ungantor
      @Ungantor 3 роки тому +14

      @@ancientofdays8644 True, I understand what you mean... There kind of are books that do *both*, such as Titanicus (the Abnett book, which has a lot from a civilian perspective), and some of the more grey-and-grey Horus Heresy stuff (Like the mutated Raven Guard killing Space Wolves to preserve their secrets)... Which I super enjoy, but I'm not going to pretend really fits in with the almost 'video gamey' doom-style plots we generally get. Would be fair to say some of us are just a bit spoiled by those odd 'flashes in the pan'.

      @@Ungantor Well, there are the Ibrahim Gaunt books, where he deals with infighting in the Imperial Crusading force but I have only just started those books so I am really not sure which direction that one is taking. And of course, there are the Eisenhorn books. Honestly, most books that involved commissars or Inquisitors as main characters tend to be a bit more political.

    I did really like the bit with Thomas Marik going "We're just going to concentrate political power into a an elite warrior class who live by a strict honour code, there's nothing Clan like about that" in the beginning, and Arion just going "Bruh, seriously, that so Clanner I had to look closely to make sure that purple bird hadn't turned green" by the end.

      @umngyr 2 роки тому +20

      To be fair, the clans did get SOME things right. Limited scale warfare governed by a strict military code is extremely useful for limiting collateral damage. The problem is it doesn't work if one side doesn't follow the rules.

    Lengthy post warning: in the early 90s, Battletech was my life and one of the few things that kept me sane. It was a darker, more twisted Robotech. I bought Ideal War the month it came out at the local Waldenbooks. I can still smell the smell of fresh book. Anyways we went through a phase where we campaigned a Vietnam War style scenario with infantry and light lances. LAMs, a few Battlemasters. The GM basically gave the rule that one side was to defend the capital city. Our side was to assault. I was a Warhammer jock then and it was all Inner Sphere. It all went to hell in the marshy swamp. They put up so much jump infantry as to be comical and had their dudes with light, jumpable Mechs. And it was a great deterrent except for our LAMs that strafed their capital and heavy mechs they had in reserve. One LAM hit one of their Thunderbolts and rolled a critical and blew him away catastrophically. And they chased the rabbit trying to use their mechs as impromptu AAA guns. Well we slogged through and wasted their infantry and killed or crippled their light mechs. Their plan was to wear us down in the marsh (which was main way in) and then finish us off. They didn’t expect LAMs. And towards the end, Warhammers, Battlemasters, and Riflemans emerged and just mopped up what was left.
    This was a literal 5 hour game.
    Best days of my life. Cheers

    I appreciate this video was completed and uploaded 2 years ago now, but I've just finished listening to this on my drive to and from work.
    For the longest time I thought the story was called "Perfect War" and I think in a lot of ways there's reflection on the expectation and limitations armed conflicts bring, and those who fight them. It would be interesting to hear from your own perspective, perhaps at the end of each audiobook, your ruminations and thoughts after giving the story. I get the feeling, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, that this wasn't chosen at random. A favourite of yours? Perhaps, or maybe one where the idealism of Marik's ambitions to restructure warfare, even the most extreme as the guerilla fighting on Gibson, matches with your own desire or motivation to see change in our society.
    I think you nailed the characterizations perfectly, and honestly I'm going to listen to the others you've made now.
    Thank you Razorfist.

    I particularly love the part where the protagonist touts the Samurai deciding to stop allowing firearms to be produced in fear that it would make their skillsets obsolete. He fails to mention that the Samurai DID become obsolete with the arrival of a certain fleet of (at the time) modern warships that fired a few shots in Edo bay. Those events led to reforms and eventually the creation of a modern army that brought about the end of the Samurai. Those who fail to adapt and evolve end up extinct.

      Funny thing is, he was incorrect. The samurai not only didn’t outlaw firearms, they heavily integrated into their ranks. Thing is, due to their isolationist policies, firearm technology never really advanced beyond the matchlock level until the reformation of the country.

    I mean I'm not sure that is an entirely fair metephorical characterisation of how the United States fought the Vietnam War, given they author so explicitly states it was his inspiration. And some of the stuff about halting the progress of military technology rather than simply guiding the mechanisms and logic by which it is employed seemed kind batty, but otherwise wonderful read!
    The way thomas talks and frames his actions is a great encapsulation of elite theory as well.

Here's to hoping Razor finishes narrating the Thomas Marik saga (and possibly the Jihad if we're so lucky. In spite of being a pulp, the novel has some absolutely filthy foreshadowing in it.)
