All the projects in Portugal I watch are Brits restoring houses so it is refreshing to watch native restoring sympathetically family property. Good luck with it all😊

Yeah Joaquim, chickens will eat potato Beatles; they will eat anything.
As for the fun of the project, I can't call it exactly fun. It's a lot of hardwork and expense that in the end pays off. The reward of having a restored land and property, and seeing your grandparents place alive again in a place that is beyond peacefully gorgeous, is unmeasurable. To me, Minho is paradise, and what is fun about it, are the people...and there is always a "festa" going on in a land where you find IMHO, the hardest working people in the country, and the happiest too. Keep up the great work.

A good satisfactory life takes work & effort. Sometimes fun sometimes not so much...that's life. Embrace your new life-span & be happy with the little things in life. 😂😂😂and yes in Portugal it can get hot...do what the Portugese do...& dont forget the siesta👍😁

Joachim, i just saw a video from a guy who traps adult beetles ready to mate...he then puts them in a ZipLock back and pops in into the freezer. Then on hot days, he pours some bugsicles out for his chickens to help them cool down! 😃
I'll try to find that vid for you.

Squash the potato beetles. Put in some water to cover them. Let seep for a couple of weeks. Then spray, diluted, onto your potato plants. Will deter any further beetles.

Probably a really silly question Joaquim but why not set the tent up under the lean to where it will always be protected protected from the sun and a lot of the wind too?
to answer the question you set, building your dreams should be fun but there will always be work involved as we all know nothing good or worthwhile comes for free

Boyfriend, it’s been 96* plus here in Pennsylvania. With high humidity and astronomical heat indices over 100!
    So 86* would he welcome!
And we’ve been I a drought situation the last six weeks with only a few thunderstorms to speak of. So it’s watering , watering, watering, watering!
I hate the heat and humidity but get acclimated to it because the gardens still need tending. I work mainly h the cool of the evenings, the two to three hours before the sun goes down.

Great garden. I'm jealous. Try to eat your carrots without peeling them. A great deal of the nutrients are in the skin of the carrot.

I was thinking the very same thing! I don’t know where that idea came from but I never peel carrots! They don’t look as nice but that skin is great fiber and has lots of vitamins, like you said!
I just scrub and eat them.
My mom always peeled them, too! I think because they came out of the ‘ground’ people think they’re ‘dirty’! And she was raised on a farm!

In a previous vid that you're not a builder. But how come you know how to do builder things, and farming things? I think you said you grew your own veg in your home garden in Canada.
And you're artsy -- in your design of your quinta, your cooking, your cultural tours and background explications, how you lay out planting rows, your communications. What type of work did you do in Canada?

You will be able to use the outbuilding during the heat of the day and the tent at night when it is cooler and the water tank sounds like a priority too. When does your family return?

Thanks for these nice videos. It must indeed be pretty busy weeks. I noticed (31:01) that you put the base blocks for your tent on their side. A specific reason for that? Wouldn’t it be better and more solid the normal way? Chickens don’t eat those bugs (toxic because to heavy in solanin). Encourage the arrival of predators such as starlings, blackbirds, crows and pheasants, which eat larvae and adults. Ladybugs and ground beetles prey on eggs. To encourage their presence in your garden, you can install nesting boxes or an insect hotel.

Is your pup’s name Alabaster? You said it many vids ago but I don’t remember. It was something that means ‘white’.
She, like me suffers in the hot weather!

Been trying to place the region you are in; my sense is in the extreme northwest of the country and fairly close to the coast (from watching the fog roll over the mountains.)

Yes, my town is 15km up river from the ocean. The valley channels the ocean cool air, hence the cool nights even in the heights of Summer, and the vinho verde.

Hi Joacquim. I read recently of someone who was delighted how well runner ducks controlled her potato bugs without doing much damage to the plants. Given that you had ducks in Canada, would that be something for a future year?

I have noticed that the masons, sawmillers and farmers are all elderly men. It appears that these are not jobs that attract young men, and the skills they have are at risk of being lost. In a world where having a traditional skill may be a life saver, i find the disappearance of those skills and knowledge a tragedy. The beetles are probably fleeing your neighbour's sprays, although your neighbours are probably saying I told you so.... will you shave your dog?
