The reproduction blue wallpaper and border are based upon a 1790s pattern found in the Reveillon wallpaper collection. The curatorial team here at Mount Vernon considered the date, country of origin, and color when choosing this wallpaper. Here is an excerpt from our blog about the Blue Room's wallpaper: "George Washington’s papers confirmed that there was a major re-papering campaign throughout the Mansion in 1797, when the Washingtons returned from Philadelphia at the conclusion of his term as President. Among the suppliers Washington turned to were two Philadelphia merchants who dealt in highly-fashionable French wallpapers: William Poyntell and Georges Bertault. We also had definite evidence that the Washingtons had used French papers in the Mansion. Surviving fragments of the wallpaper border used in the New Room were a product of the royal French wallpaper manufactory started by Jean-Baptiste Réveillon and later continued by the partnership of Jacquemart et Bénard... Looking for a blue-ground, French paper from the 1790s, we found an appropriate one in a Réveillon/Jacquemart et Bénard pattern book in the collection of Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris." Thank god there's a trust like you guys that are doing these places are up and restoring them the way they should look there's so many mansions that have been abandoned and left to rack and ruin I think it's pretty bad of the government letting his places go so that people can destroy the history that's inside them and Nick whatever they want to sell it these places could help the homeless or people that don't have a lot of money somewhere to live

Non-Subject Question: Does MV have any plans to fully excavate ALL of the slave graves? When I visited MV I seem to remember that he grave area was packed in with bricks??? It was kind of appaling, actually. What prompted me to ask the question is because I know in other types of centuries old excavations graves are dug up and x-rayed to determine the causes of death. Similarly, do you have any intention of having any slave bodies examined and the results publicly made available? Just curious.
Some very good questions. There is a multi-year archaeology project happening at the African American Cemetary, most importantly, we are not exhuming any of the bodies, the team is digging down just a few inches to reveal the grave shafts to identify the position, size and direction of a burial site. These grave sites were unmarked and it wasn't until technology advanced to allow ground penetrating radar that we were able to get a sense of the location of these grave sites. The ongoing archaeology work is helping to confirm the sometimes false positives from the radar. Hi Simon, the wood trim, the mantle and the floor boards are all original. There's no patina on those items because we do apply a fresh coat of paint to them. Does this answer your question?

Hi Simon, many of the furniture items are original, for example the sideboards in the New Room and dining room, Washington's bed, the furniture in his Study. Occasionally we also have to make replicas of items, for example the harpsichord is undergoing this process now. Replicas are used when the object comes to a point where it no longer can stay in the Mansion due to preservation concerns, when we take the original objects off-view they go into our collection storage facility where they are maintained but still available for study by researchers. Other pieces of furniture are period correct and are based on the best documentary evidence we have at the time. For example the dining room table was determined to be square so we found a set of tables that matched the dimensions and features form an inventory record of financial papers. There are a few original paintings in the house, mostly in the New Room, Front Parlor and Study. If you look at our virtual tour online you can study these in greater detail. The majority of etchings are reproductions, the originals are in our collections, but due to the climate in the Mansion are not kept on display. There are no 19th century paintings as the house is preserved at the time of Washington's death in 1799. Yeah but they are taking liberties by assuming the room had that blue and white wallpaper. why was the mantel that ugly greenish? im betting washington just called it the blue room . That just sounds better tan telling your guest that they will be staying in the, "ugley green room at the top of the stairs." Dont it?

i thought wall paper didn't come into use until the victorian era
