The church of Santa Maria Assunta, commonly known as the Jesuit church, is located in Campo dei Gesuiti, not far from the Fondamenta Nuove. According to some sources, the church was founded with the title of Santa Maria Assunta dei Crociferi by a certain Pietro Gussoni in 1148 and equipped with land, water and marshes. In 1154 Cleto endowed it with a hospital for the care of the poor sick, both men and women. In 1214 it was destroyed by fire but was quickly rebuilt. St. Ignatius of Loyola first visited the city of Venice in 1523 to embark as a pilgrim for Jerusalem. He returned there in 1535 with a group of friends who already called themselves the Society of Jesus, and here he was ordained a priest. It took two years to sow well in the lagoon and have a large following. He left for Rome in 1537. For the Jesuits the old church of the Crociferi was not big enough. So in 1715 they demolished it and built their temple thanks to funding from the Friulian Manin family, patricians since 1651. The new church was consecrated in 1728. The Jesuits in Venice identified Domenico Rossi, also author of the Church of San Stae, the architect ideal for carrying out the work they needed.The plan is typical of Jesuit churches, with a Latin cross shape, with three chapels on each side in the longer arm. Inside the church there are works by Titian, Tintoretto and a pictorial cycle by Palma il Giovane.

Wonderful to watch, Massimo! The Jesuits certainly had good contacts when it comes to great artists. The Il Gesu in Rome, remains one of my all time favourites with those Baccicios...

Come sempre ottimo lavoro: visione d'insieme - osservazione singola e particolare; es. la bella lettura che ho pototo fare del corpo di san Lorenzo dinamicamente preso tra la luce del fuoco (lo strazio del suplizio) e la luce divina che lo chiama alla gloria del martirio. Mi è rimasta una curiosità: il finto damasco che fascia le colonne e tapezza le paraste è tarsia marmo nel marmo o fresco su gesso?
