The Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue in the Ghetto in Venice was founded in 1532 but needs a lot of restorations. I'm member of Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue in New York city that was founded in 1675.
It's interesting to see the Barley twist shaped columns in the Canton Synagogue, i wonder if they were chosen just because they were a common Baroque design, or because of the supposed link to Solomon's temple of the originals in St Peters?
I come from a tiny nuclear family of unknown lineage, so it touches me when people talk about things like heritage and legacy... I also thought of a previous playlist (Medeval?) where there was discussion of preservation due to salt damage. It's incredible what a major impact even small substances can have under the right conditions.
It is not open air. If memory serves, it was a small series of hallways, a room or two, and perhaps a staircase. I do not know if it will be public, we walked through when restoration work was ongoing and this part of the museum was not then open.
the word (Canton) may relate to the territory that lies south of china (canton territory or province) derived from Chinese pin yin system (Guangdong) as the Portuguese were residing in Macau island in southern china! (just an idea)
How fascinating it is that jews could preserve their identity, culture and language so successfully...
I did’t have time to visit the ghetto on my trip to Venice, a big thank you Smarthistory for bringing these places to me until I go back myself!
Very interesting - and important - thank you for this ❤
I was there! This video brought back memories of my visit to this unique place! Thanks!

Beautiful video about the history of Jews in Venice.
Beautiful Synagogues.
“Build cheaply and after 500 years they are suffering...” what haha still way better than apartments these days 😂
Beautiful synagogues
Very informative. Thank you.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Great work
Bravo!
Regarding the declared passageway from the German to Italian synogogue, is it private or public and open air?

Is the Jewish community in Venice not decreasing like others in Europe? How do they keep their numbers stable?
They vary like any normal community would. What's the issue?
