    Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Department of Biomedical Engineering
    Dr. Swindle-Reilly is developing local ocular drug delivery technologies for patients with age-related macular degeneration, the third leading cause of blindness, which currently has no cure. The technology, in the form of biodegradable injectable implants, will reduce the frequency of patient treatment and improve visual outcomes.

    About InnovateOhio, IP Promise and PITCH X
    Born from the knowledge that we have world-changing discoveries every year that originate in universities but need help moving from lab to market, Ohio’s I.P. Promise was launched by Lt. Governor Jon Husted as an extension of InnovateOhio in fall 2019. A total of 16 Ohio universities agreed to work together to make technology commercialization faster, easier and more impactful.
    PITCH X: From Lab to Market is a series of talks from university entrepreneurs discussing technologies ready to make a difference in the world through commercialization. By raising awareness for breakthrough technologies developed right here in Ohio, PITCH X is helping connect university research with private sector investment as Ohio grows its innovation economy.

    I have advanced ARMD. It is always thrilling to hear of new technology which may be able to make life easier in the future. Heads up folks, while we pray for a better treatment we live today. Learn the necessary blind skills necessary to live well with sight loss. As you can see I am neither unable to use a computer or restricted with what I do. The only thing I cannot do for myself is drive. There are ways around that. Pray and work for future better treatment but learn to live well today.

    This is all great news!! It would be even better if we could figure out how to prevent these eye diseases in the first place. But, unfortunately, pharmaceuticals would lose a lot of money. I hate thinking this way, but the recent pandemic proved this point to me. Healthcare has become all about the money and not about health........

    I’m so sad my brother who is 78 has macular degeneration and probably advanced he’s been told there’s nothing to help him. He lives in Arizona all alone. I’m in Texas and 81 and cannot visit him. Is there anything that can be done for him? I feel so bad my heart is breaking, he’s sad and lonely and going blind. He has a very sharp mind. His his memory and cognition is not affected. He’s very bright it’s just makes it sadder that he knows what’s happening to him and he can’t do anything about it. Please can’t hr be helped? He’s such a good hearted person.

      Taurine is no doubt a supplement and can be bought at stores dedicated to selling vitamins,minerals and supplements. Some larger grocery stores or even mercantile stores will have special departments that sell such items..in or around their pharmacy departments. May seem odd too but Taurine is what helps cats have night vision….. I do think you should get the advice of a person who also treats people with the supplements and such as often regular doctors have no idea of how to use them. Opthamologists may know more since this is recommended for eye diseases treatments in a major way. I suggest that because the amount seems very high….and I have been treated by an MD who is also an integrative therapist.which means this MD uses both standardized medicines and the vitamins, minerals and other substances that are often already in our bodies in different amounts., Ive been in treatment of all disorders that developed in 2013, when I had breast cancer with mastectomy. It’s important that the stuff recommended is known about by whomever orders it as therapy…. So don’t guess.,,find out from someone who really knows because supplements are as effective or more so , as chemicals drugs. So it could be harm or benefit just from amounts.

    I take the eye shots. My Mac.degen. began healing immediately. And I was delayed takomg every month because of other illnesses..but I had 3 shots straight on monthly basis. The eyes have held to keep,on healing by itself. The shots completely speed up that action. I’ve never read anything that says the effects stop if the shots stop but the eye Dr. seemed to be saying the shots may need to go on longer than 6 months …I didn’t ask more. Assumed it all depends on how the individuals healing process takes. So he didn’t say even the shots were a permanent cure…but he is surprised at the level of healing that’s been accomplished in my eye so far. Usually the shots are painless because there’s a lot of liquid used to add numbers to the eye and eye wash used after,,etc. that occurred the first eye shit. I felt nothing…didn’t even know when the shot had occurred. But each successive shot,,the Dr. has used less waters over the eyeball and I’m gradually becoming aware of some pain with the shots. But will not hesitate to ask him why and ask for more flushing to stop pain from increasing with shots. Btw, I had no idea these may still be considered …experimental..or semi -experimental…. Just like the plethora of pills being sold for treatment of Mac.degen.

      From my understand, the 'capsule' is inserted in the eye for slow release to last over several months. What the video didn't mention is susbsequent capsule will have to be inserted, setting off a chain reaction of scar tissue to formation. Like scar tissue that forms over cataract replacement lenses, the scar tissue will have to be removed. I can imagine this will infringe on any eyesight gain. Imo, not worth it.

    Wow. So much misinformation. First and foremost this is 17 years ago. Injections are still the treatment for the kind of MD she's referring to, which is NOT the common form of macular degeneration. Everything she is referencing only applies to the wet form, not the dry form, which only affects about 10'% of md patients. (I don't use the term AMD because I was diagnosed with drusen, the precursor of it at age 27). My first major hemorrhage was at age 49. I've had over 70 injections. I'm am legally blind although the injections have helped slow the progression. Until recently there was no treatment at all for the more common, typically much slower progressing, dry type. There is a new drug on the market now that holds potential but has some potentially severe side effects and is not yet well established. More are on the way. I find it hard to believe that someone with the background she claims doesn't know these things. I wish what she said was true but it's wrong from the beginning. Oh, it can also cause geographic atrophy, cellular death in the macula. That's what Henry Winkler is talking about in the ads currently on TV that look like public service ads. They're not; they are done by the pharmaceutical company behind the new drug I referred to. This is shameful.

    • @cjaxon2991

      What is the one Henry Winkler was promoting?

    • @rickmilam413
      @rickmilam413 8 місяців тому +1

      I don't recall. I really like Winkler, hear he's a super nice guy, but the ad is a bit misleading. They never say anything about it being for a pharmaceutical product. However when I looked it up online a big pharma company is responsible for the ad. I have difficulty finding things due to my vision but my retina doc told me that the company that "sponsors" the commercial is the one marketing a new treatment for geographi. atrophy, the subject of the commercial. He says it's very early days and there are a number of questions about the treatment and he won't consider it yet. Plus my disease is genetic and he said the manufacturer acknoledges it may not work at all for that.
