인당수
'인당수'는 판소리 심청가의 눈대목 중 하나인 ‘범피중류’를 가지고 어두운 곡조로 재구성한 곡이다. 본래 ‘범피중류’는 우조길에 진양조 장단으로 이루어진 점잖고 우아한 멋을 지닌 곡으로 공양미 삼백석에 몸이 팔려 배를 타고 인당수로 향하는 비통한 심청의 마음을 있는 그대로 드러내는 것이 아닌, 유유자적한 느낌으로 아름다운 자연 풍경을 노래함으로써 심청의 슬픈 심경과 묘한 대비를 이루어 내는 대목이다.
하지만 이 곡의 작곡가는 인당수로 향하는 심청의 슬프고 착잡한 내면의 심정을 곡에 담아 보다 인간적인 모습의 심청을 그려보고자 하였다. 그리하여 어두운 곡조로 작품을 재구성하였고 장단 또한 변화를 주었는데, 영산회상이나 산조 등 국악 전통 기악곡에서 많이 나타나는 느린 장단에서 점점 빨라지는 만·중·삭의 형태로 작품을 구성하였다.

Indangsu(Korean)
‘Indangsu(Korean)’ is arranged restructuring ‘Beompijungryu(Korean),’ one scene in Pansori called ‘Simcheongga.’ The Pansori is a genre of Korean traditional music reciting a story. The original Pansori of ‘Simcheongga(Scene Beompijungryu)’ based on ‘Jinyangjo’(Slow tempo) rhythm that is one type of rhythm structure in Korean traditional music gives the gentle and smooth feeling to the listeners.
In the original story of ‘Simcheongga,’ the heroine dedicated her life jumping into the ocean called ‘Indangsu’ to get around 50,000kg of rice as her life’s worth to get treatment for her blind father. In the story, sailors needed to devote one life into the water to across the ocean safely. Because the rice was used as same value of cash at the ancient era, she got promised by sailors to deliver the rice to her father if she died.
The grief of the heroine is not stated directly but revealed indirectly by contrasting with the beautiful scenery around her rather than mentioned directly. It gives the effective ways to maximize her grief.
The composer of the music focused on the humane aspect of the heroin when she was heading to the ocean. The deep misery and distress was well expressed in the song with sad and emotionally melody and rhythm. The entire music used the beat that started slow and got fast eventually. It is typically used for traditional Korean music such as ‘Youngsanhoisang (Korean/ the Vulture Peak Assembly),’ and ‘Sanjo (Korean/ Free-style solo).’
