    I've driven both the 991.1 and 991.2 Carrera S models. The 991.2 I drove at the Porsche Experience Center, Silverstone in the UK for about 3 hours. The car feels great, but I've just last week bought a 2013 991.1 Carrera S with 27k miles on the clock. Personally I find that the NA engine sound is just sublime. While the 991.2 is impressive, I just couldn't resit the 3.8 NA engine. Also my 991.1 has the 4-pipe sports exhaust, which brings me to a another point. I really dislike the two pipes in the center of the 991.2 when ordered with a sports exhaust. All these things come down to personal taste. That's why all 911s are individually spec'd. We all like what we like, and that's OK.

      Just put down a deposit on a 991.1 15k mile 2013 4S in 2022 for this same reason. I drove a pal's new 992 base and I guess if youre new to Porsche, they are impressive. I'm old school. We like what we like.

      I just traded my C8 for a 991.1S (plus some money back) today. Still not sure it was the right decision, but I like the car.

    I drove the 991.2 CS4 yesterday. Really fast and quiet was my take-away. Love the new Sport PASM. Sport exhaust was just ok, but I miss the intake noise. Drove home in my Cayman S 3.4L and was reminded why I love NA cars.

    Two details that needs to be clarified Nick. The 991.2 has the sport exhaust, did the 991.1 had sports exhaust?
    Secondly, it can be seen in the video that the big gap opened during the second acceleration run, is at the moment of gear change because PDK vs Manual.
    I think the 991.2 won't be so good with the manual gearbox, as the fast shifting PDK keeps the turbo on boost whilst changing gear, on the manual the pressure will drop considerably and there will be much more lag felt.

      +BatuKMan1 Apparently the turbo's are kept on spool so there isn't any delay. Some sort of trickery, whether that applies to the manual, I'm not sure but they've said no lag etc :D

      Yes, but that only works for really short periods of time, which works fine with the PDK. Since no one can shift that fast with a manual, the Turbo lag will be much more significant.

    the 991.2 sounds way better. It has huge torque at low and mid range RPM. Forget the naturally aspirated. Porsche has a long history in how to make turbos and the new 991.2 is just awesome.

      Only our opinions, but I couldn’t disagree more. The NA sounds like a proper engine, all I hear on the T is a whine. Makes me feel like I have tinitus!

    Why are you not a fan of the powerkit (X51)? Can you elaborate on the power delivery of those motors that you dislike?

    I just bought a NA 991.1, don't like the sound of the new turbo engines apart from that the .2 looks great.

      +Nick Murray once you hit sport plus, its feels very fast, there is something about the 991.1 that i know you still prefer it deep down inside

      having owned both a 991.1 C2S and now a GTS (both with PDK), the GTS feels faster to me, even above 2500-3000 rpm. The GTS also doesn't have that odd hesitation around 2500 rpm. The peak torque is slightly higher in the GTS (5750 rpm vs. 5600 rpm I believe), but the engine does rev more freely and the PDK is tweaked to be a little more aggressive too. The engineers say about 15 hp is gained from the intake, the other 15 hp from the cams/valve lift. The special intake also provides a different sound than a regular S.

      Nick Murray it's really not a downgraded C2S. It's an arguably perfectly speeded C 2S/4S for less money. What's not to like? Plus it's got the power kit for extra willy waving.

      +Jasper NL What are you talking about? Because the 4S is heaver? It really did not factor in with the simple test we did here, the 4S still left the 2S behind.

      +Nick Murray The 4S has better 0-60 times than the 2S. The 4S you tested also has a PDK, which is also faster than the manual in the 2S. Even factoring those advantages out, though, I think the turbo is clearly faster.

      +Kyle Cronin Yes the grip that gives the 4S better 0-60 times was not a factor here because we were rolling, also by the time a change was needed the .2 was well ahead.

      W-James absolutely. But the car drives maybe 10% better around corners if even and sounds 75% worse than the N/A engine. For me, I'd never ever buy one of these.

      +Broncho Gillespie yeah, the manual transmission driver is missing shifts and not being a very aggressive or quick shifter. Looks like he would run quarter miles in the 14's when a good driver would be low 12s.

      I have to admit that many car makers are going to turbo route for fiscal reasons but stating that Porsche is loosing character by this might be a bridge too far. They introduced a turbocharged version of the 911 in the mid-70s :-)

    Manual vs PDK is not fair comparison. The PDK will always be quicker.
    991.1 sounds better, IMHO.

      yeah, it's pumped in the cabin through a hose/flap, so it should sound good. the boxter/cayman give better sound, especially the 3.4 litter flat6, the motor is right behind you, and it sounds glorious ;).

    Thanks Nick! Best comparison test I've seen to date. My one nit would be that the video should make clear that the 991.2 had an optional sports exhaust fitted to it. I also can't tell whether the 991.1 had a sports exhaust. Would be good to know, in other words, whether this is a real apples to apples comparison.

    You can't achieve an accurate comparison in speed and torque if you're comparing a manual c2s to a pdk c4s. Obviously the c4s will be better because of the insanely fast shifts and the all wheel drive

    Nick, agree with others....thanks for doing a comparo that people want to see. What do they sound like. I heard the turbo whine (not sure if that's what it should be called) and didn't like it. I have 3 F/I cars and one N/A car in my household, and I think N/A is where it's at. Shooting for a 997.2 CS one day, don't want anything do do with the new turbo (non "Turbo") 911 right now. I understand the reason for the change, but damn....

    I'm surprised how good and clean the 911.2 sounds inside the cabin. It still sounds like the Flat 6 we know and love. On the outside however, not as much... but still pretty decent imo.

    wow the 991.2 is sooo much faster than the 991.1.... still like the NA cars but when I get one, it'll be a 991.2.... I might try and hold out for a GT3 but may just get an S or 4S to hold me over!

    Nice comparison. I heard some turbo whine with the turbo six that disappeared as the car picked up speed. The NA 3.8L sounded fantastic. Did the 991.1 have PSE? For drama, can't beat the NA flat six.

    As much as I am a fan of driving manual cars I just don't know what to think when seeing the difference in shifting times between the two. So much more involving to be shifting a manual vs PDK but it just feels you are so inefficient in comparison. Nick would you stick with a manual or PDK for a .2? What are your thoughts related to shifting after driving both back to back?

    the turbo sounds like starting a vacuum cleaner , no way it's as good as the gen1, I am looking for boxster and drove new 718 and GTS and man the difference in sound and feel is great. Currently driving an A45 and the turbo is amazing but just doesn't do it

    Nice video Nick. I prefer the 991.1 for the sound and the overall feel. It's more of a porsche. More of a driver's car. It's like with Ferrari. The new 488 is such a GT car and not the sports car I once fell in love with.

      Apart from sound, the 991.2 is the better drivers car. Iv driven them both and the 911.2 had much more communicative steering, more pedal feel and was more exciting to drive because its acceleration was more brutal. It was also more comfortable and refined which makes it a much better daily driver and long distance cruiser. If you want a proper old school 911 then get a 997 GT3.

      @@w-james9277 I agree, I have owed both a 2013 991.1 and a 2018 991.2 . for the driving I do around town , I love the torque of the 3.0 turbo .. To me the whole car feels better.. I have had 4 911s and the 991.2 is my favorite.. after seeing all these videos I think I will get a sport exahust for mine.

    There's a reason why you tested SOUND in the beginning bc thats the only part where 991. 1 will win rest its all 991.2.

    I suspect that the folks who prefer the .1 over the .2 havent actually driven the .2. The .2 is better in every conceivable way. More steering feedback. Chassis is really tightened down. And the 3.0 produced waaaaay more power. A .2 is much faster and has superior handling a feel. The .1 is a great car. But newer is better. Case closed.

      The .2 is the better car and it sounds quite good in person. But I still love the sound of the .1 more. The solution here is to have a 991.2 GT3 then you get newer car and even better sound 😅

      I don’t like the fact that the steering wheel in the .2 blocks the visibility of the peripheral dials. How is that better?
      The exhaust sound on the .1 is better too. You also get better economy with the .1 as well. I appreciate your comment but you are wrong when you say it’s better in every way.

    Great video! They both are gorgeous, but 991.2 is by far the most beautiful car that Porsche ever made. ❤️ It is literally perfect (for my taste) and no wonder that 992 doesn’t warm my heart.

    I like the interior sound of the NA engine more
    (on full throttle the exterior sound of the turbo model is surprisingly similar to the NA version)

    Well done, thanks for this insightful bit of information. Describing the visceral elements of these cars is a huge, often overlooked aspect. My biggest regret over the trend in electric cars. Someday I hope to own a 2012-2015 CS Coupe. Silver with red interior is on my bucket list! Look forward to your next video!

    Surely one won't be missing much of the sound from the NA 991.1 in comparison to the turbocharged 991.2. It still sound great.

      It sounds great! I've got one. The only people who don't like it are the 991.1 owners. Better get used to the sound because all their going hear is the 991.2 that's in front of the slow 991.1 ha ha

    I can hear the Turbo's kicking in. But you can't hear them inside the cabin. And the sound isn't bad at all. I personally had a choice between the 2016 1.1 and 1.2. I choose to buy the 2016 911 GTS. The engine sounds are awesome and being the last Naturally aspirated other than the GT3 and GT3RS. I think the GTS just might be a collectable car more sooner than later. My 2 cents worth.

    Noticed that you mention you are not a fan of PowerKit engine at around 7:45. Why?

      +etc205 The lighter internals of the Powerkit engine rob it of mid range torque for what is a questionable increase in hp at the very top end. I think most people would prefer to keep the torque.

      +Nick Murray not only "lighter internals". Modification to the airbox/intakes and more important, more lift for the intake valves (11,7 mm to 11.0 at high revs, 5,4mm vs 3,6mm in mid range). And yes, all of this translate into a better breathing engine but somehow less torque/pull under 4500rpm or so. The torque curves are not that wide apart though.
      You can win some torque back through modification of the exhaust, but in a 911 there isn't much to modify. No room.

    I don't care for the look of the sports exhaust. Combined with the new engine cover, it looks like the back end of a old VW Bug. Given the noise is barely different, I would keep the stock exhaust and upgrade to a aftermarket if I wanted real noise level changes. (stock is fine with me)

    I had a choice, NA or turbo in the 991.1 and 991.2. I chose the NA. I couldn’t give up the beautiful noise for a little extra torque.

    Porsche has been making a turbo engine forever, and people used to pay high for turbo and turbo s. Now you got one at a relatively affordable price. It is reliable, faster, responsive, fuel-efficient, and so on. Get over the turbo complaints, and we need to move on.

    I think Porsche have engineered their turbo charged engine sound a lot better than Ferrari (thinking of the comparison between the 458 and 488, the 488 sounds terrible).
    But at the end of the day how much performance do you need/want? Personally, I'd prefer the sound over yet another hundred HP to an already super powerful car.
    Oh, and one last thing. Having a turbo in a car doesn't decrease fuel consumption, it increases fuel consumption. I know from having owned turbo charged engines it doesn't matter what you do, you end up using the turbo a lot more because of the decrease in power.
    Putting a turbo in a car with a smaller engine is a way of satisfying the bureaucrats in the EU who think they're helping save the environment. But these cars are only more frugal on paper.

      i agree 90%, but i want to add something, to your great points. Porsche is owned by VW, who also owns Audi, and Lamborghini. I don't see the audi r8 with a N/A v10 or Huracan v10 changing to turbos, Why is that? What happened to EU regulations? why is it not effecting them Porsche? I'll tell you why, it's either a money grab, not for the environment or it's only for the uber rich in the EU to enjoy N/A motors. sad.

    The 991.2 is still a mile better than a 718. Shows how much a difference 2 cylinders can make. I’m a 718 GTS owner.

    Nick, if you do like so much about n/a engines, why don´t you buy or just test the new gen Audi R8, V8 or V10, or both... The same group as porsche, the same quality, more beauty and more fun.

      +Arthur Sperotto yeah, now he has to learn to drive it. Also, if you want manual in a 991.1, go for the GTS. The movement is more precise. See how the guy missed a gear during the second "drag race".

      +thefridgeman For many people the GTS is a downgrade to the C2S/C4S. I have not noticed any difference in the gear movement between the C4S and the GTS, are you sure they are different?

      I am not the only one. "The shift is now much better than earlier versions of the 7-speeder" C.Harris on the "Goodwood Road&Racing" site, writing about the GTS.
      The old manual gearbox in the 997 GTS was waaaay better through.
