    Fantastic. You have taken what everyone else tries to make as difficult as possible, and made it a simple, fun task.

    I like how you used wood of different thicknesses and colours. That actually helped alot to understand the process.

    I've been watching videos on how to make a dovetail joint by hand, and this was by far the simplest way! No template, nothing!

    John ... you are tremendously good at not only expertly make these joints ... but also in making these videos. You do both so well. Prior to watching this video the only dovetail joints I would make was with my Leigh dovetail jig ... the idea of doing them by hand like this seemed but an impossible dream to me. But after simply watching your video here I went out and tried it myself ... and just copying what you've done here (and in your other dovetail videos) I was able to make a fairly nice set of dovetails ... and since then by hand is the only way I make dovetail joints anymore. Thank you for these superbly instructive videos. I really can't praise them enough.

    That's plain old school skill with a mallet and chisel. One of my uncles in the Philippines used to crank out furniture with mortise and tenons, and dovetail joints with the same ease, while smoking a cigarette and drinking beer! Here I am looking for a way to build a dovetail jig for my router.

    Chopping with a chisel ahead of the line quickly removes the bulk of the waste, but the second chop on the line leaves a cleaner edge because you are only removing a thin chip.

    John, I have been learning to cut dovetails mostly by the guidance of youtube. This is the only time I have seen a chisel used instead of a marking guage. This seems like a far easier and faster way to mark. Why is this not the standard way? I notice you don't do it this way in your other videos. Thanks for your vids. They are great.

    Mark the knife lines for the sockets tightly against the tails. Saw the sockets with the blade up against the knife line. Keep the saw blade on the waste side of the knife line, just touching it so the knife line becomes the edge of the saw cut - does that make sense?

It might be covered in the book, but in case it's not can you comment on what I should look for in chisels. I have cheap sets now that I use for general work around the house when I renovate or build decks, but they would not be quality tools.

    I want to recreate a small, wooden folding table I have but cannot see what holds two pivoting wooden legs together, it is a metal (gasp) screw or bolt something, would you know what it is or if there is a wooden or 'purer' way of joining the legs so they pivot? Hi John, I've got a cheap 12 TPI handsaw and I can't seem to get perfectly accurate cuts. They often veer off the line and leave a very rough finish. Would it be worthwhile buying an expensive dovetail saw, or do you think it might be my technique?

    • @johnbullar
      @johnbullar  11 років тому

      Hi Jase, the rough finish is down to the saw. Veering off line might be you or the saw but you probably need a finer one to develop your technique.
