Why not justify the trade from North’s POV? No need to hang back from it. It IS justifiable.
What people continually fail to consider is that North not only obtain the player they need, they get him immediately, a year ahead of next year. They’ll only slide 14-15 picks in 2025 to their new 2nd rounder.
Draft swaps are NOT zero sum. This one is good for both teams.

Funny thing is that north didn’t want to trade pick 2 for pick 6 and pick 20 something to Richmond yet swap a future first round pick to get what they wanted

Richmond are just entering their rebuild. They have many years of winning the draft to look forward to. North have enough top draft picks now and need to back themselves to climb up off the bottom of the ladder. Love what North are doing. FOS was the right pick. If LDU requests a trade, Mckercher goes to Tassie or Simkin or Wardlaw have concussion issues North will need the depth, and if not they will have one of the best midfields in the comp. North have backmen developing and don't need the Dersma version of a backman, they have Comden.

Richmond have accelerated their rebuild by 3 years so not sure what you are going on about.

Have they? I guess we'll have to wait and see. Previous big midfielders take years to develop, including Dusty, De Goey and LDU. Then the key position talls take time to develop. You could be looking at 4yrs before they come good. In the mean time Richmond will lose more senior players. There might be a couple of years of a false positive, then a dip before Richmond contest for a flag again.@@davidharris4580

Good discussion points as usual . Just a couple of things, first when you 'HAVE' to get some experience and leadership in through the door you can't say a certain player you want from another club is worth pic 40 but not pic 30. What are North going to do with pic 30. Draft another kid ? They gave 25 to the Bulldogs for Daniel but didn't that pic become 30 ish anyway ?There's a lot of younger guys
( sub 22yrs ) on the list that have not yet had a run at it ,in the seniors . There are tangibles to help a club improve like low draft pics , the number of pics , picking the best talent available and good development staff and resources. But just as important are intangibles ! Leadership , competitiveness , calmness under pressure and being infectious with these traits. Daniel, Parker and Darling will bring this . Did Collingwood's, tangibles win the flag in 2023 ? Or was it the belief that no matter what the scoreboard says or how long left to play, they were "always" going to win any game? INTANGIBLES !
Get the guy's you identified in and pay.
    Roos vs Tigers 2029 GF ? 👍

North's trade of their first round pick is a bit of a talking point, but perhaps it is not so black and white. For one thing not all high draft picks live up to expectations, and many sliders turn out to be diamonds in the rough, so the draft is always a roll of the dice. Also, the perceived depth of this years draft may skew things a bit, the player that North got might turn out to be way better than pick 27 would be in other years. Especially if next year's draft depth is less impressive as speculated, and also compromised by academy selections, the trade North made to get a player type they need for right now might level out the value of the trade a bit from their perspective.

I had a quick look at a very early top 10 for next year. two of the top mids are academy picks. Things will change but when two of the top guys *might* be off the table that doesn't help. There were also no key backs in the top 10. Early doors but they had to make a decision on available info.
From a tigers point of view they have their spine built and 3 young mids this draft... they just pick the two best mids they can at the next draft with their pick and norths and they have young guys at all the hard positions to fill.
History shows there is normally a young ruck you can pick up from another club that wants more opportunity and flankers and smalls you can get in the midseason draft and spp and develop them

North Melbourne needed to realise earlier that they were prepared to use their 2025 first round draft pick they could have used that in that re- draft in a deal to get the defender that they wanted in Alix Tauru... e.g. Carlton gave up a 1st & 2nd with Hawthorn to get pick 14 this yr .... AND then combined 12 & 14 from this year to get West Coast 's no.3 pick...ALL THAT when Nth was holding even a better pick no. 2... Yes there was some swapping back to Carlton of later Picks....BUT WHY DIDN'T NORTH EXPLORE THAT AT LEAST RATHER than sabotaging their future for next year when they have another top 3 pick that was super valuable just given up to Richmond...AND STILL Not getting Tauru who they were really wanted ..MEANT That.. This was a disaster for their recruiting

I think North were close on taking Tauru but given his back injury, his unlikelihood to play in 2025, and the fact they wanna get moving rising up the ladder next year it made it harder to pick him with such a reach at #2.
They also wanted an extra year of development put into FOS and their new tall. FOS can almost play round 1.

What you failed to mention was the draft is a raffle. There has been many top 10 picks that have turned out to be rubbish. If Matt Whitlock turns out to be a spud it'll be a bad move. If he turns out to be the next Silvagni or Carey, it'll be one of the greatest moves ever. Richmond could get a spud with Norths 1st pick next year. Time will tell.

They probably had to do the trade but I agree with you that they should never have traded for Caleb Daniel and as you say just bitten the bullet and taken Alex the flying Viken with their first pick.

As a north fan its simple. We needed a key position player so we did the trade and got one. If we need extra key position pieces then two picks next year in the 19-25 range (before father sons, academy picks and bleh bleh bleh) Can still add a lot of valuable key backs and forwards. Plus with Darling and Corr there it offers a bit of protection and time for them to develop as they don't need to be in the side ASAP as the club demands it.
Overall we won't know for certain who wins or loses this trade for at least another 8 years. Both the roos and the tigers haven't used there picks next year but early doors I can see why Richmond fans think they've hit the motherload.

I think the club has many scenarios it is covering with FOS and Urqart picks. Does LDU go. Maybe Sympkin concussion issues. If LDU does go compensation pick would offset Whitlock trade.

North cannot "go and go now". We recruited 3 oldies, at insane cost, who won't be there in a few years time, they'll just leave gaping holes in their wake, a future misfire in our forward plans. Back pedalling, scrabbling for justification & credibility, late on day 1 of draft night, saw us attempt to make good of poor decisions, culminating in forgoing future pick 1. This trade/draft period will not have its true impact felt for 2-3 years, when North will be desperately searching for young talent to replace the delisted oldies we have just picked up. Perhaps the investment in youth should have been made now, so we'd end up with an additional 3 gun players with 3 years of experience in a bonded side.
But no, we will be back at square one, needing to draft 3 guns, whilst we watch Richmond's boat sail on by.
    Why, why oh why?
But it's done now, we can only play chess with what is, and after all, there is still a heap of promise and scope on the horizon.

North absolutely got pantsed. There is a reason they are the biggest rabble in the league and it's bad trades and drafting as we've seen yet again. Early word out of Arden Street is they will look to draft Cal Twomey as their new list manager/full back in the 2025 draft. Wouldn't be surprised to see Spud Firitto listed at full forward in round 1 after being picked up as a SSP selection

Word is that NM knows they may lose LDU. So they will get a compo pick after their original draft pick which is now Tigers. Still stay in top picks in 2025.
