i notice. i care. you can always tell the difference between a plugin and an actual vhs scan. burning to a disc is a really interesting step in that process, i just use an hdmi to rca converter as an input to my vcr for recording to tape, then an rca to hdmi converter into obs for recording playback. lots of cables and little plastic boxes to fuss with either way, though, which is what it's really all about in the end
I've used digital to analog converter > vcr > analog to digital converter before, but it's a bit too many little things and boxes for my taste. the dvd/vcr might sound cumbersome, but at the end of the day its the workflow ive found to be the most consistent, and consistency wins over ease of use in this case. need it to be reliable haha.
@@extrajeff that makes a lot of sense! i've not used my own vcr scan setup as much as i once intended precisely because of how annoying it is to go through the whole process, so yeah, anything that feels streamlined and reliable is Good. i'm really impressed by the work you put into your stuff, how it all looks. and for good measure your scripts are tight. i can feel the tim rogers influence viscerally. anyway thanks for the food, always love seeing behind the scenes stuff like this!!
I had no idea that all of your videos took that much effort. It's true that your video style is unique, so I respect that you put in so much work to get that unique look.
This brings back so many memories of working in a media library, this was very cool to see, the effort definitely shows in your videos, also I saw a wolfpupy, good taste! Also I love your cat. 😊
As someone who did notice I want you to know I appreciated it. Is the player capable of having its hard drive upgraded to an SSD? Could be a worthwhile upgrade. Do you change the tape often or do you feel like the degraded quality only improves the effect? Because I can see that being the case.
I use the same tape for years haha. my current tape, if recorded at the LP setting, has really heavy distortions during the first ~5 minutes of the tape, as I have recorded it over so many times. if i want something more clean, i'll just fast forward to a bit later in the tape and it's all good. also helps that some VHS tapes have like 4 hours of runtime, so I dont think I'll have to switch it out anytime soon. about the SSD, idk. I bet its possible, but tbh it wouldnt help me much, since the recording from dvd to HDD goes in real time anyway.
@@VictorSantos-gs3rk unfortunately, that wouldnt work, since if i speed up the footage to be twice as fast, it would lose half the frames. when slowing it down again, it would play in real time but still with just half the frames, just every remaining frame being played twice. if i was working with 12fps animation or something, it would work though! i have played around with doing inverted video and reversed video to see what kinda different results I would get before, so there's definitely something to the idea. just not feasible to speed it up unfortunately.
there are certainly solutions for this, i have a digital to analog video converter that i could use to essentially duplicate one of my PC monitors and hook that into the input of my VCR, it's just that itd be yet another little adapter that needs power, and more software stuff to make sure it duplicates the monitor correctly with the right aspect ratio etc. but it's possible! I've also played with the idea of creating a dedicated machine for this, a raspberry pi connected to my little white DVR recorder, which would be connected to a VCR. you put a usb with a video file into the RPI, which automatically rewinds the tape, hits record, plays the video, rewinds the tape and then plays the video, which gets outputted to the DVR which records it. everything could be built into a VCR shell, so it'd essentially be a standalone unit for this specific purpose. however there are several technical hurdles that im not skilled enough to get over, so ive kinda scrapped the idea for now. it'd be cool though.
Good stuff! Been using a similar technique but using my old xbox 360 instead of a recorder. Should probably get one of those recorders though, looks really good!
I just looked up the model, it's so cheap I really want one now, I'd been thinking of getting an old camcorder for some art projects. Do you think any RCA capture card would work?
the camcorder you mean? I'm very pleased with it. It has a built in wide angle lens, which i use to film myself in this video. you flip a switch and it goes much wider, which is greatly appreciated on my end, seeing how these older camcorders usually have a very narrow field of view. oh, it also has a title function that i havent gotten around to trying yet. and yeah, any rca capture card should be fine, depending on how much you care about quality etc. for my purposes, and for most people i reckon, its fine.
"how do you make the VHS effect look so real?" - "I make it look real by making it real"
Hey Jeff! That sounds like a lot of work for, you know, kind of a small thing that very few people will notice or care about. Glad you do it :)
Ik this is your second channel but it’s still underrated asf. It’s fun hearing you talk about stuff

Thank you for the break-down of some of your creative process :)
love it when creators are so open and so constructive to media.

i learned something new today, thank you Jeff
Love it. Very cool and so good to see you actually degrading video, not just filters!
After watching Jeffiot videos for awhile and then going to watch other creators with their VHS effect, I notice the difference now lol big difference
Chef loves FOOTage
i love my vhs / digi cams

Would you lose too much info or quality if recorded double time and then slowed it later in edit? Genuine question here.

so fuckin cool jeff. i wonder if you could find something to record directly to the video tape via a video input to cut out the dvd / hdd steps
