I think the reason the Gen 2 starters all feel mid might be due to being a bit…naked like they all are the most natural starter evos…ever, but that natural style makes them feel like they’re a good amount of bits to them
If we're going to judge them by how good they are in their respective games, typhlosion is actually better than Charizard, but Charizard looks cooler for sure.

@@toxiic1568 lol, not only do they have the same stats, but a near identical movepool by the time they're evolved.
Only difference is Charizard gets an extra typing and moves.
But i think the main thing against Zard is just that the gyms/elite 4 have better fire counters in Kanto. Whilst a fire type in Johto has free pickings and barely any competition.
@@toxiic1568 yeah, and it turns out getting rid of the flying typing and putting him in a different game makes typhlosion better in its respective games (GSC/HG/SS) than Charizard is Kanto games. Charizard doesn't line up very well against the important battles in the Kanto games, meanwhile, typhlosion movepool and lining up better overall against the johto region than Charizard does against Kanto makes him better. Competitive battling is a different an of worms, but as far as a playthrough goes, typhlosion is better to pick in its games than Charizard is in its games.
@@ergofiction5627 that was kind of my point if you read my comment. Typhlosion lines up better against Johto than Charizard does against Kanto.
I think Venusaur's problems are that he becomes relatively flat and squat compared to Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, and he trades in his cool spots for warts. Those, combined with his head shape, make him just look sort of lumpy.
He also doesn’t get much new compared to the dragon form of charizard or the cannons of blastoise venusaur is more of a middle stage
I thought I was the only person in the world who absolutely loved Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, but despised Venusaur, enough to not pick him over Squirtle. And yeah, I think they went too far in terms of design change from Ivysaur to Venusaur, relative to Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, making the whole thing a bit jarring. If Ivysaur was a bit closer to Venusaur, maybe it would have been easier to adjust, and even like Venusaur.

When you look at typhlosions hgss design, omg that is so menacing and badass with the red glowing eyes and fire out of it’s back and the colour scheme looks so good! Then 3D comes along and washes out the colours and the fire and tames the eye glare and make it look puny.

I remember when my Combusken evolved into Blaziken. I was couldn't believe how cool it was. I was so disappointed with Combusken(Spicy Rubber chicken) when my Torchic evolved, but it was totally worth it! Also, Surperior is amazing. Decidueye may be my favorite design of these.
The one that I think is most under appreciated is Primarina. It doesn't have that deadly look that starters normally carry, but I think they nailed the Siren design. It is a beautifully designed Pokemon.

Definitely agreed with Primarina and Serperior. I always love to see appreciation for Primarina. My personal favorite Starter Pokémon. Followed by Cinderace in second and Serperior in third.
i loved combysken as a kid. the torchic line was always fun for me. I think his cry in emerald sounded cool and that carried me all the way to Blaziken
Primarina is way too girly the male versions would be transsexuals and the boys aren't gonna wanna pick her. The starter should be gender neutral.
As much of a banger as Decidueye is, I gotta give Sceptile the best grass starter tittle. The Treecko line is near perfect all the way through.

I've always really liked Delphox. It has super great offensive typing and the stats to back up those fiery attacks, and its design makes me think of like a cursed warlock - sort of like a witchy version of Ninetales, a super cool inspiration for a starter pokemon.
Oh man I thought I was the only one who loved Delphox because I swear EVERY SINGLE Poketuber out there has been dragging this poor mon through the mud in every pokemon ranked video ever 😭😭😭
I think the Idea for Delphox is good and the design is decent but I feel it could have been done better than it actually was

Incineroar is one of those Pokémon you either hate or love. I feel like people give it unfair hate. Imo, it has a cool design, and a even cooler concept, and personality.

I mean… If we are talking pure aesthetics, there is a reason Charizard is so popular. Yes, he is overused and overexposed, they need to dial that way back. But his design is top 3 easily. It’s his design that makes him so popular.

Exactly. Charizard looks so imponent and strong, no matter the hate it gets from being so popular. If they maintained charmeleon red color instead of that orange it would be even more badass. Theres nothing wrong with charizard being the favorite of many people and Alain/Leon's Ace Pokemon.

Honestly, my personal favorite starter is Infernape. The design looks amazing, definitely showcasing the whole Sun Wu Kong inspiration (though part of that is my bias for Monkie Kid), and it’s whole aesthetic is fantastic.
Now Granted, I don’t play the games (the only Pokémon game I’ve played is one of the Gen 3 remakes, but I can’t remember what it was), but I loved seeing Infernape in the anime. The attacks looked gorgeous (though you could say that about most, if not all, Pokémon), and… God, I just love it!

@@morokee3641 Looks, obviously. It's stats are clearly higher in every regard. But it loses its cool leaf blades coming off its head and arms, its tail gets fat and bulky which doesn't fit the ninja vibe and sceptile looks high as fuck.

My favorite starter is Serperior. I will always choose Snivy playing in Black. Samurott and Primarina are my second favorites, very clean and very nice designs. Every starter I pick in any games, whether that be the core games, ranger almia or mystery dungeon, I always keep them on my team.

Definitely worth the wait. It was kind of eerie how much I agreed with these, to be honest. I rate Swampert higher, but I'm fully aware that's the nostalgia talking.
It's the typing for me. I was mind-blown as a kid when I found out how fantastic of a typing water/ground is. I was the Treecko team till then. The Hoenn starters are so balanced for their region. I never went with Muay Thai chicken unless I picked May. Felt wrong to have Brendan have the Muay Thai chicken as his ace.
@@susear5939 Yeah, that typing is truly incredible. Turning the electric weakness into an immunity is next level, and though he has a double weakness to grass (which made Sceptile my white whale as a kid), he can just pull out an ice beam and obliterate if need be. But I have to admit that his design isn't quite as cool as Blaziken and Sceptile. I still rate it, and I pick Swampert every time, but the other Gen III designs are just so good that it's hard to compete.

I always liked the Chikorita line a lot. I think my only problem is that in the 3D games, it looks bland while in 2d games and in Pokémon snap and the anime, it looks more vibrant and has more personality. I hope in the future 3ds (possibly in Scarlet/Violet), they make it’s color look more vibrant like it should instead of a pale green, and give it a different battle pose
I loved Blaziken since I was a kid, I used to have a blaziken plushie and would always carry him everywhere I went. I named him chicken wing.

I always thought meganium was hated upon everywhere, but it is actually very loved. This proves that a pokemon doesn't need to be jacked in battle to be good.

Man, pokemon white was my first ever game. Picked the Snivy line and ever since it’s held a special place in my heart. Shiny grinded for it over COVID on another cartridge and got it on 2,413 resets. Best decision I ever made. Seeing it be #2 on here made my day

Not even lying, the description "looks like your quirky dreams teacher that thinks the earth's a rhombus and 5g turns your skin green" actually raised Delphox quite a few spots for me. Torterra is still MVP, but I'm starting to cast some of the others in a new light as well now.
Delphox and Chesnaught really do go under the radar.
Though that'd have to be due to how much of a banger Greninja is.

Yeah the other two couldn't compete. Even Gamefreak showed favouritism toward the Ninja Gaiden frog
Yeah, but Delphox is getting into Unite, so... But I hard agree there was some favoritism shown towards Greninja. I dislike it because as a Greninja fan, it pains to see more reasons for Greninja getting hate because of that favoritism, which it does.
Instead of what they are doing now in shafting Greninja for the entirety of Gen 8, retconning Ash-Greninja in the anime and removing support for it in future games, they should give it the Charizard treatment. As in, let it keep it's special form, but give the other starters their own forms to reduce the flak. If GF thinks that Charizard can be saved from both hate and it's special forms getting removed, then there is no reason the same can't be said for Greninja, who doesn't have an egregious number of forms to begin with, who is more popular than Charizard (as of 2020, 2021 PoTY awards) and who was saved before, when it was HATED at it's debut in Gen 6.
And that's why I want to see Battle Bond forms for Delphox and Chesnaught down the line, either Gen 9 post-game/DLC, Gen 6 remakes or Gen 6 legends games. These 2 would have so much potential, even if it wasn't about the Greninja hate getting reduced. If Delphox's proportions were adjusted slightly, similar to how Greninja's colors were adjusted, it could be WAY more liked than it is. Not top 10 of the year, but still pretty popular, and cool nonetheless. A guy can dream, am I right?

I grew up with Kanto and Johto. I spent the most playing gen 5 Unova and Serperior has grown on me over the years. Definitely one of my favorite Pokemon. Such an amazing design that a lot of people overlook

I feel like having an entire selection of starters be pure mono types does them a disservice. Weakened the Johto lineup, and weakened the Galar lineup. They certainly improved on designs in that time, but there's something about giving a Pokemon a second type which blends over into design. Which I think is something all starter Pokemon should have.

Was satisfying seeing blaziken at number 1. Cannot deny the kickboxing chicken
Meganium was the only grass starter I regretted choosing. I could not get over the embarrassment of struggling after I let Bayleef reach final form. Will always choose Venusaur (especially as a mega) and threw my froakie in the box to make it my official starter. But...Primarina will always be a straight ACE of a starter to me. I adore it's signature move and design

We definitely have different opinions. I wouldn't say yours are wrong, just different. Venusaur is my favorite Kanto starter, especially with it's mega. Infernape is my favorite final evolved starter, and decidueye is my favorite grass starter. There's no doubt Blaziken is up there, but he's not better than Infernape design wise. As for my favorite water starter, the best design is definitely Greninja, but I'll always hold a special place in my heart for Samurott.

I feel like if they would’ve just switched out Delphox’s and Chesnaught’s palette to their shinies they would’ve hit harder. Shiny Delphox seems like that’s how they intended for you to see Delphox. The vibe they were actually going for.

It's funny because the root words for the name Blaziken are Blaze and Chicken, but here's another way to look at it... Blazing-Ken, as in Ken Masters, as in the fancy flaming footwork of street fighter.It also helps that Ken, When translated in direct Japanese, becomes "punch" or "fist".
