Dunedin's answer to Auckland's Spit Enz (Bayfield boys) both University, art house type bands. Here's how it worked in New Zealand in the mid 70's - North Island (Split Enz) - South Island (Mother Goose) Mother Goose, classic fun time band, always leave a live show happier than when you went in. I was lucky enough to see them regularly at the Raffles hotel in Perth Western Australia in 1982 whilst they lived here to record their brilliant 'This is the life' album. They used to run around the audience with a large goose shaped cut out guitar (just a piece of wood and a rope for a strap, painted like a goose) jump up on tables and stick the gooses beak in your drink and have a great time. They were a great fun live band even though they acted like something from Play School or Sesame Street they were excellent musicians who didn't need a gimmick to hide their faults but used it to enhance their talent and live show. I was always surprised that there was never any agro (they used to stick that goose wherever they liked) and how good the music and singing was with all their mayhem going on. Great times, great band. Thanks Mother Goose.
Thnx, never realised youse had that Nth / Sth Island rivalry ( or that you had a sense of humour ) only joking! Love the humour in the sit coms, we had the same thing here in the 70's (Before Countdown B4 aunty would allow both Rock & Roll. Radio stations were owned by different corporation's Vic NSW Qld different playlists for local talent.Sydney Never heard of Skyhooks, Endz that Split (they were pretty OUT there too) or Captains of Matchboxes, ALL normal for the stoner crowds that apparently attended the Reefer Cabarets going on down here, Seems that lots of talent that used to arrive from OS couldn't get a look in on the East Coast & would have to do Penance in Perth first, The hit Baked Beans was a hit nation wide. Us ex Poms love Nonsense songs Bowies first hit was the Laughing Gnome! I can believe about the Goose! Mother Goose was an evil old hag who used to scare the shit out of children with her Nursery Rhymes! I saw them at the Sandown Park hotel 1980. wonderful stage act but Bob Jones's bouncers would have had a Fit if they had come off the stage. havin a hard time just beating up the audience let alone the act! Their re-arrangement of Paint it Black is Superb! Orchestra $ all. Would that have been the Perth Philharmonic? They were always redoing R&R songs
Seriously, if Mother Goose were Dunedin's "answer to Split Enz", then I think they mis-heard the question. To compare the two bands is like saying Herman's Hermits were like the Beatles because they both played "beat music", whereas there's quite obviously a HUGE gap in quality and depth of meaning. Cheerz! ✌️
Was a fan as a kid, great to see these clips on you tube but pisses me off I never got to see them live, brilliant entertainers with huge talent, very unique.
AND bands that actually out on a SHOW! Just a bit of effort for a crowd. Now the only pub crowds just want to give their money to Pyxels! a bunch of mindless jerks who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes!
One of the best bands I've ever seen live... Great musos great showmen..
Yep I'll second that. Brilliant!

Mother Goose - a post-lobotomised Split Enz for pre-schoolers. Sure, they were fun, but so was flinging poop around the playpen. :-D
