    Darn Suzanne, for being raised in the city, you really have what it takes. You're amazing. Also, your video gets an A+. That said, I would have added some deck screws between the nails. I had to do that on my deck floor boards to keep the nails down. I got tired of them creeping up.

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive  2 роки тому +1

      Hmm, that certainly WOULD have been a better way to go! Not sure why, but the Amish used ringless shank nails for everything, hence why they were sliding back out. And making it worse, was my heater I had set in there during the cold spring while I was working. It heated the green boards, causing them to dry faster and push out the nails :P

    • @robertkent2466
      @robertkent2466 2 роки тому

      @@This1LifeWeLive My deck was built using spiral nails before impact drivers were popular. Every year they would work up. Everywhere I could I installed deck screws. Problem fixed. The Amish were probably using air nailers on your cabin build to save time.

    Great job, I would have cut a 3 or 4 inch strip of tar paper and lay it underneath the seam. And the dark floor looks great. You can always put a light color rug down to lighten up the room.👍👍👍

    I would of resin sealed the wooden floor so dampness couldn't get into it and that would then have given you the good surface to stick the damp proof membrane to and the fame insulation I would have used a spray tack adhesive as a spot tack because nailing it down you've now pierced the waterproof membrane so allowing dampness a way through.
    All in all though you're doing a great job learning as you go 👍

    from what I saw in your video from watching many yt videos of laying floor but I could also be totally wrong. 🙂
    The blue stuff you laid.... should not be placed like that... offset it when laying it down...
    When putting in each strip of flooring place it on an angle to help get it joined in properly... also use another piece of flooring to rubber-hammer it home to not damage the edges. Plus use a small nail gun on the bottom edge to hold it in place forever... to stop any movement or lifting up (this seems to happen heaps.. hence why small narrow nails now being used)... I probably would have done it sideways... and done it in a lighter grade to help make the room look a bigger.

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive  2 роки тому

      I don't know that the blue foam is normally used for floor insulation, they do make special blankets you can put down to prevent squeaking and dampen noise, but most houses would have "code" insulation in the floors, what the code is for that area. But there is something I did wrong, lol, and you'll see in the next video :D

    Mistake. hmmm. If it were solid T&G it would have been installed with the groove against the first wall and nailed through the tongue to hold the boards down so they can't lift and buckle. I hope that isn't the mistake with this type of floor and you aren't supposed to nail it down!

    Ok you have to change the ceiling.everytime I see it I immediately think it's covered in black mold yet it's the would you chose for it.Needs to be light colored like the walls.
    Ok just my opinion,sorry just had to say something because to me it clashes with everything else.but it isn't like it's a main house or anything so will work.
    I guess I should go back and watch that episode again to see why you chose it.
    But you are a hard worker at everything you do so the kids are learning great work ethics and that's a big plus in today's world where the young adults want everything given to them and work for nothing.
    Keep up the good work Suzzie Q. I remember as a kid back in the 60's & 70's everyone calling my cousin Susan Suzzie Q.

      The ceiling appears much darker on camera. I had already bought the flooring when I needed to find ceiling wood, so choosing a color was a bit tricky. The ceiling boards were knotty pine, and sinc the walls were maple I didn't want wood competing for attention. Painting the ceiling white would have worked, but would have bounced too much light around, giving me migraines, lol. I'm going for a more antiqued intimate look, and less farmhouse style :)

      Ok that explains it. Sorry didn't mean to be so critical of your choices but I get what your doing with it now.
      I'm sure in person it looks different, cameras sometimes have a way of magnifying what we do.
      You just keep doing what your doing and it's going to be nice when complete.
      Thanks for your reply and explanation it helps tamp down the black mold alot 😁😉😅.
      I'm kidding someone has to pick on you why not me?

    Very informative. I'm about to do vinyl plank flooring in my house right now and this video helps.

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive  2 роки тому +1

      Erik did vinyl in his dad's house (looked amazing). Some are "click together", meaning no glue, no nails, they lock tight together. I had wrongly assumed that's how much modern floors were (including mine). I was wrong.
      With that said, you MUST be very careful with the vinyl as the edges will snap off if incorrectly locked, or not locked tightly (snap when walking on it). He had his professionally done, and had to have one area re-done because the guy didn't snap them fully and they all broke.
      It's less forgiving because of that, so go slow and take your time :) I'm sure it will look great when you are done!

    Hi Susanne
    This has been a very big project in the making and it looks amazing well done. One question for you Suzanne was it still cheaper with all the add on or to put your finishing touches than to buy it completed?

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive  2 роки тому +1

      I think cheapest would have been 100% from scratch. Shoot, you could BUY a sawmill for $3,000, and between nails, screws and ceiling, windows and doors broke even right at $5,000 (what I paid).
      Everything that I used what a rare deal. It would have been VERY difficult for a seller to have constant access to such deals and sell for what I'd put into it. Sprayfoam being the most costly of everything. I would say for everything, I'm at $8,000 (Sprayfoam was $1300).
      For me personally, it's a HUGE success story, and I can see God's hand in everything. There was one point I was panicking because I realized I was out of trim and needed more, but when I looked down at the floor, suddenly there WAS more trim... and I had JUST looked down and seen only 3 pieces . . . somehow they had multiplied to 10!
      There are lots of times I doubt myself, but I can sit in the cabin and see all the ways God helped me, and remember that if He believes in me, so should I!

      @@This1LifeWeLive Hi Susanne
      Thank you for your answer and I'm very sorry to ask that question. (Just curious) But no matter what, at the end of the day you made it the way you wanted it to look and that is all that matters. I have to say it does look amazing. Well done, take care and keep up your good work.

      There are definitely areas that can benefit from practice . . . such as cutting the holes in the wood for the light fixtures . . . granted it WAS hard maple and 1" thick, but some are cut slightly too large and there's a gap! I feel like know HOW to get a precise cut takes a bit of practice ;D

      @@This1LifeWeLive Yep, practice makes perfect Suz but still most of the things you guys are doing your first time are so awesome! I've been a farmer country boy my whole life and have learned how to do work like that since I was little. From building/fabricating our own equipment parts to building a little milk shed...but you guys come from the city learning as you go too, and have done simply amazing! You guys are living proof that a can do attitude + hard work + awesome humor can a person can do anything and an inspiration to us all!

    That floor is coming back up,, the foam is way to thick..and keep that extra box ,,,,and you can dremel the bottom of the walls,,,,and tuck in everything,,,I would rip out all of it,,,fill every seem in sub floor with insulation,,,little strips,,tap in with a hammer and a wide drywall spreader,,,spray foam the underside,,tape ,,or staple plastic down,,,then get the proper foam,,,it's very thin...been around flooring in one way or another for 25 years..🤓

    Its when what you learned here that you still use somewhere else that makes a girl shine well. If it were that easy then everyone would do it as well. I would hope that fitting a grooved thing in a slotted thing might just go natural as it relates in nature. I never went naughty there either. Its just as it should look... finished. I don't think your going to like it after a while as dark shows the muddy feet and any dirt that gets on it bad. If you like it then its just what the doctor ordered.

      I definitely wouldn't want dark flooring in a house (heard lots of people complain about those issues), but for the cabin it's meant to be a pristine area anyway, so no wet paws or muddy shoes ;D
