  • White/Orange or the more original green/red coloured LEDs for the VU meters on a Sony HF950 Betamax?
I have a found a better method of reducing the brightness too...

lol - that's a very old video (the intro) and most of those were repairs. I do have four machines though and I will be selling some soon once I know they're solid and reliable. They seem exceedingly rare now sadly.

I always prefer keeping things exactly as they left the factory. It's part of their vintage beauty :-)

I have to say I do agree but the nearest 0402 LEDs I can find so far are just too green and too bright! I have sourced 0602 LEDs for the HF100 VU meters that look almost identical and they do look great. Better have them not quite the right colour than missing segments - always think it looks a little sad when they're missing. Note these machines both had large sections of segments missing :-)

@@MrBetaByte i replaced the leds on an HF-300. The green didn’t match, but I had a roscor gel transparency sample pack that I was able to add in a light orange filter that made the leds match the green tint of the beta hifi led better. I too prefer the factory original, just because white LEDs weren’t available at a reasonable price (or likely at all) when these machines were made. But, I do like the leds here and think that designers may have picked this setup had it been possible.

That's all really good information. I didn't know there was a black Matchline V2000. Betacam is certainly more reliable which does make sense as it's a professional format and you're right - in many ways it's the format to go for if you want reliable performance from a video cassette format. Thanks for sharing :-)

Hi, I quite like the white/orange too. My 950 had a bad display so I would have been happy to have it working again, at the time there was no parts available in Australia. Sadly I sold it years ago when I moved to Europe.

Shame you had to let it go - I've done the same in the past. Great machines though. Thanks for the comment on the choice of led colour - even now when I use the machine I have no regrets with the change.

    Hi
In my experience the LED's themselves fail on the 950 but on the HF100's they always illuminate but the IC fails as this is always in groups of 3.For instance the first 3 will light say on the left channel but when the level range goes over the first 3 and go up to the first red one ,the first 3 will go off until that audio level is below this range.Would not be LED failure but some kind of driver failure.
Interesting too how Sanyo never had this VU level meter issue with their M40 so it's a shame both the UK Sony Beta Hi-Fi models did after time.It also signifies how much use these vcr's have had. On the Sony's both had the ability to turn these meters OFF, so bearing in mind their common failure would make sense to turn them OFF unless being used for critical Hi-Fi recordings.

Thanks for the comment. In the early days I've agreed with you but I've done around 20 HF100 VU displays and 10 HF950 and all but one (an HF950) had LED issues. The banks of three going out show one LED has gone OC causing the chain to drop. I've not fully gone through how these work yet but each LED has an effect on several others so if one goes down, others will appear to too. I think the M40 used fully encapsulated LEDs rather than the 'SMD with a whisker' ones that Sony used but I've never seen one in the flesh - do you know if they did at all.
It's amazing how they were manufactured by Sony and that they've lasted this long and are no where near as refined as the modern ones.

I have some dead ones on one channel, what leds are they for the original if they’re still about? Does the vu meter not working properly stop the hifi from working as it doesn’t illuminate on my unit when playing a hifi sell thru tape, it lights up before playback

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  8 місяців тому +1

I will be doing a video on swapping out the LEDs. The original ones are glued in place and they need to be replaced with surface mount LEDs. The VU meters having bad LEDs has no effect on the HiFi stereo sound at all. There are a lot of things that can cause bad HiFi audio from bad heads, worn or contaminated tape path, bad pinch roller, bad capacitors although the HF950 tends to be better than the HF 100 for this...

@@MrBetaByte ok thanks for the reply, I read online there’s a transistor that can cause no hifi audio also so I’m going to look into that and recap the board, I don’t think the heads are worn as it had great picture and I can’t see any wear on the path. When I switch audio to auto hifi it just buzzes slightly and I believe you get that sound from a bad transistor in old radios or hifis etc so maybe it points to that?

My SONY SL-HF950ES has green LEDs, which my Eyes prefer for longer Life. Blue/White LEDs were not invented 1985.

Certainly a very good point but I wonder if they had been invested whether they might have been used. I've since lowered the brightness a little more with the white LEDs and they do look great.
