Even though I play some sitar as well I purchased this pedal some time ago, mainly for practical reasons (you don't wanna bring a sitar to a gig for just a few bars of indian sounds). But having that said it's a useful and unique sounding pedal that one can use for a variety of stuff (playing bass over it, etc.). But I can give you that: with a tutorial like yours my "getting started"-process with the Ravish Sitar would have been a lot easier! ;)

I think this is a complex pedal, like a mini computer. Some pedals can be quite complex, I also had a Woolly Mammoth clone that I could not figure out, then I realised that one dial was reversed. Lol But this pedal has been around a long time, it seems to be developing a mythological stance.
I just ordered a Ravish Sitar pedal along with two Moog ep-3 expression pedals. This seems to be the best video demonstration that I have seen so far. Others seem to show the Ravish in a light that really doesn't reflect a traditional Indian vibe, which makes the pedal seem unsuitable for the intended purpose. Its really not "intended" to play Western sounding open chords and expect it to sound good, but I'm sure in the right hands after spending hours like everything else you can come up with some really interesting stuff.

I especially like that you gave some insight into how the 2 expression inputs work. I think many people think that they are just going to plug this in and instantly tap into a George Harrison vibe. I imagine it's much like a beatbuddy drum pedal, you have to take the time to learn how to use it properly.
I'm wondering if you have experimented with running the sympathetic output into a separate amp?... if, so could you hear a noticeable difference vs running everything out through the main output? Since I picked up my Ravish pedal I've been running it to my Fishman Loudbox performer acoustic amplifier and just using the main output (not separating the signal) on the pedal. In the event someone is wondering about using an electric acoustic with the Ravish, it seems like a cool idea though I was kind of turned off hearing the unplugged sound of the acoustic guitar rather than just sitar. (Epiphone masterbilt DR-500mce) But maybe that isn't a bad thing. Just an observation as there isn't much discussion regarding electric acoustic with the Ravish pedal. I found that my Epiphone Les Paul 60s Tribute really sounds good through the Fishman loudbox performer acoustic amp. I haven't tried it through my Mustang iii v2 amp yet on a clean setting but I think the acoustic amp lends itself to a sitar sound well. I'm thinking about running the sympathetic output of the Ravish through the Mustang on a clean setting and see what happens.
I haven't tried that, no. But a great idea! If I ever get a second amp, I'll definitely have to try that. Thanks for contributing your experience with using an electro-acoustic! Very useful to know about that. I bet it sounds interesting to hear the Sitar sounds playing "backup" to the acoustic sound!
Great review, just want to say that you can add another speaker to the sympathetic strings, such as a toy speaker which can fit into your pedal board or pass the signal to another pedal board. So in theory you can have the left speaker for the lead sitar sound, and another right speaker for the sympathetic sound. This is probably where it goes beyond the sitar. One last thing the m audio expression pedal is compatible with this. It is also good for heavy metal if the signal is passed to a fuzz pedal. I would not get too nerdy with the key of the sympathetic strings, the important thing is to get the right tone A to G, and then just play with the scales to what sounds right.
I just got one after being intrigued for a few years. I saw a couple of bass demos and knew I had to have it! Still working out the controls and which of my other pedals it works best with.
Far and away the best comprehensive, no bullshit demonstration for this pedal I've seen. I just ordered one today, and I'm very curious to see what it sounds like with distortion and modular effects, though it sounds incredibly authentic and versatile all by itself. Thanx for posting.

This is a really well done video. I really liked the “pause to read” section. I am a sitar student who also plays guitar so this pedal has always been super interesting to me and also... awful (in a good way). Ha ha! This video really showed me how much more this pedal could do and I respect all the hard work that the EHX team must have put into designing it. Sorry, I thought I covered this in the video, but apparently I glossed over it! You save a preset by pressing the 'Preset' footswitch to enter preset mode, then use the 'Preset' click-knob to scroll to the Preset slot you want to save to, then hold it down for 3 seconds to store your current settings to that slot. That helped immensely. Really great video as these pedals definitely have a lot tweakbalility. Do you have favorite settings for getting perfect Beatles style 60’s vibe. Also I noticed on a video they got a harpsichord style on it for the Lucy in the Sky style arpeggio picking. Good content. I have a rather specific question: what's that cable from the expression pedal? I'm looking for angled TRS plugs that have a 'clearance' of a centimetre before the 90 degree angle to fit my pedal switcher. They need to be above the Rockbaord Flat Patch plugs, both of the cables going down. I hope this makes sense.
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure what the cable is, but I'm pretty sure I got it off ebay. I think it's unbranded, but it works great! Hasn't failed me yet... I usually search keywords like "stereo", "TRS", "angled", and "patch cable" to find whatever the cheapest options out there, are. I also like them 30cm or longer, just so I have plenty of reach if I need to stretch across a wide distance on my board.

Sooo I play the harp (pedal harp) and am just starting to get into looping and pedal effects. Other than the Walrus I haven't bought any other effects pedals. I love this one and it is going on my list! What are some other pedals you can recommend that may work with the harp?
Hey! Thanks for watching and for the question. I would say modulation and time-based effects like delay and reverb would work best on Harp. I would definitely recommend any of the the Boss DD series, Line6 Echo Park, and the EHX Canyon for delay pedals to check out. For reverb, there's the Digitech Polara, Line6 Verbzilla, and Boss RV-6. Or you could get a multi-effects pedal that has a bunch of cool stuff in it, like the Zoom MS-70CDR, or Line 6 M5. What a wonderful machine and your blessed of the knowledge to tame the beast. Still as the video played on, I noticed more and more that the sound I was hearing that not a sitar. Can a EQ fix this? Is it best to put it before or after? I usually have an EQ pedal late in the chain.

I have a Jerry Jones Master Sitar. Currently I’m creating Drone Sympathetic string tones on a loop station and playing over it. I think that my Sitar strings sound more authentic with the buzzbridge, no offense, but your drone and sympathetic tones seem larger and fuller than mine. Question: could I use just the drone effect on yours without affecting my string tone. I’m really interested in this device, if so. I’m a trained classical guitarist, but I want to learn Raga and play it on my JJ Sitar. :)
Hi Chuck, thanks for the question. I'm jealous of your Sitar! I've always wanted one to mess about and yet and learn with. I'm not at all surprised to hear that your authentic instrument sounds better in general than this pedal! Ha ha! EHX did, however, do an amazing job with this thing and I recommend picking one up to try out, if you get chance. You could definitely use the "Sympathetic Output" to take just the resonating sound of the drone, and dial up the "Dry" level so you can play over the top! I'd love to hear how that would sound, actually. Hope that helps?

Ok, picked one up and using the Jerry Jones Sitar with it. I’m sending the main strings going to a Swart Atom- 5watt 8” speaker and sending the sympathetic strings to an AER 60. The sympathetic strings are dynamite if you don’t get them too loud. Of course I don’t need the Sitar lead so I run that dry but use a little reverb on the Swart. I gotta say it’s impressive and adds to the experience. Also, I recorded a very low C drone onto a loop station by holding the Sitar up and shaking it and beating it on the back until the strIngs start to naturally resonate on there own. And that goes into its own channel on the AER. That adds the effect of a rising and falling drone without getting an expression pedal and affecting the sympathetic strings also. Sounds more natural that way I believe. With 11 stations on my loop I can easily do each key. The Jerry Jones Sitar also has 13 sympathetic strings with their own pup and can be tuned to whatever you like. It comes tuned to Dsus but I just tuned it chromatically. That’s all for now. I was gonna get a Danelectric baby sitar, but with the sympathetic drone of this pedal, I'd rather have this. Sitar without the drone is just not sitar. Now if we can get a tabla simulator....
Seems like playing the lower bass strings of an electric guitar works, but doesn't work so well on the higher end strings. I am just learning this box, give me time!
*IT* tracks really well. Perfectly, even! Being predominately a pitch-based effect, EHX absolutely nailed this sound! Thanks to their octave algorithms, which have been world-leading for years.
@@PedalExperiments One thing to keep in mind, it won't go lower than an open A string on a bass. Not a problem with a guitar, but more problematic when used with a bass or keyboard.
@@PedalExperiments A bass VI might be okay. At worst, if it's not, just get an octave-up pedal and stuff it right before this pedal. That's what I do with my bass and Mel9.
@@PedalExperiments the unit is powering on, displays are lit, I can turn the white mode knob but get nothing as far as sitar sounds it's like it's not even on
@@PedalExperiments the cords are good. I had it in the effects loop but it doesn’t work in the effects loop for some strange reason because I pulled it out and ran it straight from Guitar to pedal to amp and then it started to work. I have no idea why this would not work in the effects loop.

I have been in India and studied Sitar for a few years. This thing does not sound like a Sitar at all. It sounds like a awful tuned steeldrum. Horrible!
Well, it gets you as close to the ballpark sound as possible, without using a full piezo/MIDI setup or having to learn a whole other instrument. Ah well, it's not for everyone. 🤷♂️
That isn't my aim here. Plenty of other channels show the range of sounds and how they can be used in a musical context, etc. I mainly focus on showing how to navigate the controls, so you can more effectively dial in the sounds you want. 👍🏻

The sitar sound gets old real fast...but you can manipulate it with different reverb combos to be quite usable in ambient...

I have a Roland SPV355, as well as a GR500 and GR700....running those synths into this pedal will no doubt sonically crush, kill and destroy all.

What a wonderful machine and your blessed of the knowledge to tame the beast. Still as the video played on, I noticed more and more that the sound I was hearing that not a sitar. Can a EQ fix this? Is it best to put it before or after? I usually have an EQ pedal late in the chain.

That's an excellent question. I just used Standard tuning for this, but you should check out this video for ways to make your guitar sound more like a Sitar, and help enhance the pedal effect to sound more authentic:

I have a Jerry Jones Master Sitar. Currently I’m creating Drone Sympathetic string tones on a loop station and playing over it. I think that my Sitar strings sound more authentic with the buzzbridge, no offense, but your drone and sympathetic tones seem larger and fuller than mine. Question: could I use just the drone effect on yours without affecting my string tone. I’m really interested in this device, if so.
I’m a trained classical guitarist, but I want to learn Raga and play it on my JJ Sitar. :)

I'm jealous of your Sitar! I've always wanted one to mess about and yet and learn with. I'm not at all surprised to hear that your authentic instrument sounds better in general than this pedal! Ha ha!
EHX did, however, do an amazing job with this thing and I recommend picking one up to try out, if you get chance.
You could definitely use the "Sympathetic Output" to take just the resonating sound of the drone, and dial up the "Dry" level so you can play over the top!

Ok, picked one up and using the Jerry Jones Sitar with it. I’m sending the main strings going to a Swart Atom- 5watt 8” speaker and sending the sympathetic strings to an AER 60.
The sympathetic strings are dynamite if you don’t get them too loud. Of course I don’t need the Sitar lead so I run that dry but use a little reverb on the Swart.
I gotta say it’s impressive and adds to the experience.
Also, I recorded a very low C drone onto a loop station by holding the Sitar up and shaking it and beating it on the back until the strIngs start to naturally resonate on there own. And that goes into its own channel on the AER. That adds the effect of a rising and falling drone without getting an expression pedal and affecting the sympathetic strings also. Sounds more natural that way I believe.
With 11 stations on my loop I can easily do each key.
The Jerry Jones Sitar also has 13 sympathetic strings with their own pup and can be tuned to whatever you like. It comes tuned to Dsus but I just tuned it chromatically.

I was gonna get a Danelectric baby sitar, but with the sympathetic drone of this pedal, I'd rather have this. Sitar without the drone is just not sitar. Now if we can get a tabla simulator....
Does the pedal convert the input to a midi signal and then put out a defined tone? Anyway it sounds really cool!

Being predominately a pitch-based effect, EHX absolutely nailed this sound! Thanks to their octave algorithms, which have been world-leading for years.
@@PedalExperiments One thing to keep in mind, it won't go lower than an open A string on a bass. Not a problem with a guitar, but more problematic when used with a bass or keyboard.

@@PedalExperiments A bass VI might be okay. At worst, if it's not, just get an octave-up pedal and stuff it right before this pedal. That's what I do with my bass and Mel9.
I am at a complete loss. I got the pedal and I’m doing everything in the video and nothing is working. There’s no set up video or anything.
In what way isn't it working? Are you hearing the effect? Or is it not powering on?

@@PedalExperiments the cords are good. I had it in the effects loop but it doesn’t work in the effects loop for some strange reason because I pulled it out and ran it straight from Guitar to pedal to amp and then it started to work. I have no idea why this would not work in the effects loop.

It's a pretty unique and specific effect, so it's not the kind of pedal I use very often. But it's so great, it's worth keeping around imo.

Yeah, that is a pretty big oversight on their part. In my opinion, they really need to give this pedal an update, and put it in a smaller enclosure.
I have been in India and studied Sitar for a few years. This thing does not sound like a Sitar at all. It sounds like a awful tuned steeldrum. Horrible!
Well, it gets you as close to the ballpark sound as possible, without using a full piezo/MIDI setup or having to learn a whole other instrument.
Ah well, it's not for everyone. 🤷♂️

That isn't my aim here. Plenty of other channels show the range of sounds and how they can be used in a musical context, etc.
I mainly focus on showing how to navigate the controls, so you can more effectively dial in the sounds you want. 👍🏻

This is the most disappointing pedal i ever got. The sound is awful and thinny. it sounds like a CHEAP/FREE Vst. I do not reccomend
