      I suggest checking out my other video ua-cam.com/video/fLsk7zBEBoQ/v-deo.html too even if just to learn, I also have a bunch of videos on coffee gear and I always drop knowledge in there when I can so hopefully they help! As for the WDT tool I mention in this video, I updated to different ones since learning more and would not suggest the one shown in the video anymore (updated version I'd suggest is amzn.to/3S7yguW. Thanks for all the great information.
    I have been doing everything but espresso (pour over, french press, aeropress, etc.) and bought an inexpensive scale with timer. The timer has been really convenient. I like to have my phone dim if I'm not using it for a few seconds. Changing the dimming feature whenever I use it as a coffee timer is a huge bother. Getting a scale with a timer doesn't really increase the cost too much and I really appreciate it. I bought the KitchenTour from Amazon. It is accurate to 0.1 grams. The only thing I find bad about it is that there is a significant delay between putting weight on it and it registering the weight. For example, if I'm measuring out beans and it says 17.9g then I might drop 1 bean. I have to wait for 3 to 5 seconds for it to register and move the scale to 18g. I imagine better scales will register the weight change in 1 or less seconds.
    Now that I'm getting an espresso machine, I'm realizing the height of the scale is important. My scale is fairing thin. I can put the scale on the espresso machine and there is still plenty of room between the cup and the portafilter. But if your espresso machine doesn't have a lot of room between the portafilter and the cup, the scale will reduce it even more. Switching a spouted portafilter to a bottomless portafilter will give you a little more room.
    Based on your recommendation, I am getting the Normcore funnel. Sitting outside the basket makes so much sense to me. 👍

    Really good video. On the WDT tool, those wires are far far too thick to really do the intended function of WDT. You'll need to find one, they usually use accupuncture needles ranging from 0.25-0.4mm thick with the average and recommended being either 0.30 or 0.35. There's a 3d printed one you can find online that requires some assembly for like $15. Or if you have the 3d printer, you can just download the file and print it and get the needles elsewhere. The WDT should be breaking up clumps and more so "swimming" through your coffee grounds rather than stirring them.

    Jess, thanks for your awesome video. I viewed it several months ago after getting my BDB and purchase several of the items you referenced. I did find a dosing ring with the outer ring but it is a little loose and does not have magnets. This was after following the link you provided. Would you still have a link for the dosing funnel with the ten magnets?
    I also tried the WDT, it was a bust. I ended up getting a 3D printed one with acupuncture needles and it works great. My latest find is a puck screen by Normcore. (reviewed by Sprometheus) It makes such a difference. My pucks were fairly consistent but never came out completely clean. With the puck screen, they come out perfectly.

    Thanks for this great video with loads of useful, well explained BS-free tips!
    I will argue in defence of WDT though, as I have found that it really does help to prevent channelling in my bottomless extractions (I have a Niche Zero too which is a good espresso grinder, and VST basket, using the same tool you show here). I use the technique as demonstrated by Lance Hedrick at Onyx and its been a game changer for me.

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  3 роки тому +1

      I have been using WDT on/off and I can't notice a significant difference. Either way I do a bit of a tap tap on the side of the PF and then I do a up down tap to settle the grounds before tamping. I kind of just use it when I'm in the mood or not.
      I think, just from memory, that with the WDT added onto my workflow I tend to get less channeling overall but if I do a good job with all the tapping and evenly spreading the grounds at every step, the espresso comes out great

      @damienhallsworth3314 3 роки тому +1

      @@GadgetsGearCoffee Ah yes! I tried the tapping but it didn't work well for me so ended up with WDT. Just goes to show how important it is to try things out and find what works for your own individual set up and work flow. Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge!

    Coincidentally bought the Matow distributor/tamper a couple of weeks ago. Works really well but the fact it is just a half a mm shy of the Breville group head diameter leaving a very small but noticeable ridge of grind around the ring of the basket does my head in a bit every morning. Does not appear to affects the brew in any way though and for AU$24 it is a bargain and really has a heft to it that makes that final tamp consistent. If money was no object I would love to get ONA's distributor, purely for the dramatic effect of having a tamper with OCD in big letters across the top sitting in front of the various tools, scales etc I use for 2-4 coffees a day. 😉

    I picked up the BDB duo pack recently. (For the past decade I'd been making flat whites using thermoblock based machines).
    The two accessories I picked up long ago were a Breville knock-box, I like the size and heft to it, it's a stainless steel exterior with rubber feet, it was surprisingly cheap.
    And I've got a nice weighted tamper - my last machine was a 58 mm so I could keep using it.
    I haven't got my coffee grind and tamp pressure locked in yet, but I don't think I've had channeling issues thus far... so far I have been partially using the BDB razor and also relying on the grind timer to get the right amount of grinds.
    Anyway, thanks for the vid!
    Now that I'm not relying on the dual wall portafilter the cheaper machines use, I'm looking into some of these other accessories.
    Some of the pragmatic considerations you point out are great to know about and could really save me some hassle/money. (cool editing too by the way).

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing! I've never used the razor, everything I read was pretty much put that away and it makes sense given the theory.
      Don't use time based for the grinder, get a scale. Grind size and roast levels will affect density and thus the grind time so uou really wanna go by weight.

    As someone who's tried that WDT tool also, it's garbage! The other WDT tools that are comprised of very thin and flexible needles are FAR SUPERIOR. They don't create mounds, and because the needles are so thin, they honestly barely even shift around your coffee grinds. It functions exactly as it's supposed to by breaking up clumps and distributing grinds. I'd have to say it's arguable my favorite, most essential filter related tool that cant even be compared to the item you currently have. Considering how cheap they are, I totally recommend throwing that WDT tool you have in the garbage, and buy a new one.

      I sold it pretty much after getting it, I've been debating about getting a WDT (0.3-0.4mm needles) for a while but with the KEY, so far I haven't felt the need to, there are some visible surface clumps depending on my humidity level, rpm I grind with, the coffee itself, but when I distribute, tap, tamp, extract, haven't noticed any channeling issues with my long low pressure pre-infusion method and now with my low flow pre-infusion (with the mod).
