Dionne Warwick has had a huge career spanning almost 6 decades. She had so many hits. Burt Bacharach wrote most of her best songs. "Don't Make Me Over", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?", "You're My World", "Message to Michael", "Alfie", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Walk On By", "(Theme from) Valley Of The Dolls", "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me", "This Girl's In Love With You", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" etc.

Dionne was the second-most charted female vocalist (after Aretha) during the second half of the 20th century (1955-1999). She is also one of the most-charted vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998 (12 of them Top Ten), and 80 singles in total - either solo or collaboratively - making the Hot 100, R&B, or adult contemporary charts. Her family is musical royalty: she and her sister Dee Dee were nieces to Cissy Houston and cousins to Whitney Houston and opera star Leontyne Price.

"Walk On By" is exquisitely sung and unforgettable.
I would call Dionne Warwick the first lady of pop music of the 60s! Such elegance and beauty in her singing and stage presence. By the way, she's Whitney Houston's first cousin
Dionne's version was first and also a bigger hit on the American charts. Dionne went #4, Aretha #10. I would also recommend a similar 1960s pop artist with Petula Clark--starting with "Downtown" or "Don't Sleep in the Subway."
Love Love Love Miss Dionne Warwick. Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite vocalists ever. Marianne Faithful said it best when she said, "You can hear Intelligence in her voice"
The Ed Sullivan Show was the go to show in the 50s to the 70s. You had it made if you were invited to perform on it. Ed Sullivan showed Elvis Presley's style of performances and introduced the Beatles to American audiences. He had singers, comedians, vaudeville acts, musicians, and dancers on his show.
She and Burt Bacharach were an unstoppable force. I’ve always felt, even with all her success in the 60’s and 70’s, that Dionne is criminally underrated. She and Whitney Houston were first cousins- and you can absolutely hear a great deal of similarity in their singing. Warwick was quite brilliant!! ( Oh- you have to remember this from “My Best Friend’s Wedding”!!! It’s a CLASSIC!!! )

I was skeptical at first but 100% this is truly Live. Some of these old shows you couldn't see a mic so it's deceiving to the eye. But there were a couple of slight voice pitches that weren't identical, and she actually voiced the beat of the trumpet near the end, which isn't in the studio version. She basically nailed it, spectacularly. Looking back now, so many artists back then were shockingly near-perfect Live performers.
Sally Barker's soulful cover of Dionne Warwick's Walk on By is admirable too in The Voice under the mentorship of Tom Jones. Check it out when you have the time.
The combination of Bacharach/David and Warwick is a favorite of mine since the 1970's. I actually got to see Bacharach/Warwick in concert together at the Greek Theater in L.A. in the 1990's. It was interesting, the beautiful Warwick singing, but what distracted me was Bacharach's movements while he played the piano. Warwick is credited for a lot of songs from Bacharach, but there are others that sang his tunes. Me and my husband's special song we first danced to be a Bacharach/Bayer-Sager (then husband and wife) tune; That's What Friends Are For. It combined Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. Today, I get teary-eyed when I hear that song since my husband passed away in 2020 of Covid. I hope you do more hits from Bacharach. My favorites are, Anyone Who Have a Heart, A House Is Not a Home, Alfie, The Windows of the World, The Look of Love, One Less Bell to Answer and many, many more. I am sure there are people that would be amazed all the songs connected to Bacharach from movies and Broadway.
Aretha's version will always be very different, from the version of other singers, and even different among her own performances. She always took charge of the song, improvised and could find her own way of phrasing that maximizes emotional expression.
In my humble opinion, this is the best version and yes the first version. Aretha's version is good....but this was so very much Dionne's style. Her voice suited this song perfectly.
Nice reactions. I was 12 in 1965 and riding to grammar + HS in family car listened to Dionne Warwick sing 5 or 6 hits by David/Bacharach thru the 60'. Only AM in those cars, always enjoyed Dionne's voice + interpretation on the songs. I believe Whitney Houston is her niece, or Goddaughter.
She was always one of Bacharach and David's favorite singers for their songs. The only other cover of this song that comes close to Warwick's original is from the UK group The Overtones. At least in my opinion. It's worth a listen.

Dioone Warwick not only has an amazing voice, she is a trained musician who can play piano and sight read music.
