I'm glad you showed me this but for the opposite reason; I actually prefer the black level limited on my LG C1 because the contrast looks so much better. The "black crush" you talk about is just a natural occurrence of not being able to see certain things in the dark and is totally normal and realistic. As for dimming the specular highlights, maybe by 70 nits or so but that's a trade off worth taking for better contrast in my opinion. The black level on full just looks too hazy to me as if it's adding some extra light, and I noticed that on my first playthrough.
For over a year I would change my tv settings to limited to make up for the black raise level and I was always kind of annoyed testing each game to see if it looked right on full or limited. Now I set it all to auto same with ps5 and lowered my black level raise to 7 on my C1 and 6 black level on my C2 and everything is perfect. So happy not to be fiddling around as much forcing ps5 and my tv into limited for all media.
I’m the same, tho I use the PC with my C1. Having to change system or TV settings for every single game is just crazy. You need to keep track of your preferred settings, then the settings for each game, and constantly change them. I don’t play just one game end to end and do nothing else. I’ll jump around a lot of the time depending on what I feel like playing or watching at that moment. So I’m with you. I find good settings that satisfy me 98% of the time and just stick with those, and just enjoy playing the games.
VRR ruins gamma. I force Limited on PS5 and the LG. If you’re using VRR with HDR you are sending Limited Range YCBCR regardless. I gave up on VRR/120Hz. Lowers resolution and causes near black gamma issues that both raise black AND crush, it’s stupid.
I agree with you. VRR is causing a lot of issues but I still think it's a good feature to have in Games. 120FPS is great BUT you are right, the loss in resolution/details is sometimes too much. Forcing limited on the PS5 and the TV is perfect and will not cause any troubles. I made this video because so many people recommended to force limited on the TV while the PS5 is outputting full, to avoid the HDR black level raise in The Callisto Protocol. As far as I know - If limited content is being pushed to the OLED, then the OLED should be using limited as this will expand the limited range to full which is why OLED present a great SDR experience. I am on PC, most content even with RGB Full is actually using Limited Dynamic Range within that Full container, so OLED TV set to limited will expand this range to fill the capabilities of the OLED panel. If the content being sent to the OLED is actually FULL dynamic range, then Full should be selected on the OLED TV - also note that if limited range is sent in a full container, the OLED in auto mode will set to Full which will wash out the grey scale. I could be wrong, just my observation.
I suspect that, unfortunately, this is not a bug in the game, but an extremely unpleasant, but for some reason popular artistic move nowadays, to make it look like you're watching a movie in a theater. I have C7, so FTDA is not available, so I play in SDR on PC. It looks a bit better than HDR, but still, there are plenty of places that use that nasty gray haze instead of black.

For LG C2 + PS5 do you recommend auto-auto and using FTDA or limited-limited?
Here's something to blow your mind: My TV is nearly 15 years old - a CCFL-backlit LCD screen - RGB full on the Xbox always looks better: colours are deep and vibrant, blacks looks nice and dark, whites get really bright, and there's practically no colour banding in any games. Insane!
Remember the days when you just used to plug and play without needing a goddamn diploma in understanding AV settings just to get an acceptable picture in your games? For all the brilliance of modern tech, it's certainly introduced some headaches... I'm on LG C1; first thing I did was disable HDR at the system level on my PS5 and change the TV to Black Level: Limited and TCP now looks amazing (to my eyes). No idea what the RGB output is set to on the console (auto, probably); never gave it a thought prior to watching this. I'll have a look before I play tonight.
I guess what you are describing can be summarized as: Up until now, everything we have been doing was based in some fashion on NTSC (An about 80 year old standard) or sRGB (an about 27 year old standard). Everything assumed displays to behave like an NTSC or sRGB display. Now that different devices are showing up that try to deliver the best HDR experience (now there's actual competition and differences in device capabilities that aren't just differences in how much they can amplify the signal to produce an image), we are seeing all these issues.
I have an LG B9 and for the PS5 I put the TV into PC mode. Is this still recommended? For Calisto Protocol I went with your advice to play in SDR and put the in game setting to Monitor SRGB, and it looks amazing! I always check your videos out for HDR settings they translate well to my B9 👍
Ive Noticed something...im playing now with rgb range full and TV, lg oled b9 too, Black Level on low. Normally im playing with limited rgb but in this game i recommend only change the rgb on full with this TV and it looks awesome in hdr mode!! But i think normally the best setting is put on limited rgb and TV Black Level low for games. What u think friend
I have an LG C2, and I always find my way back to setting the Console/PC to Full RGB and setting the TV to Limited RGB. While I want to view the image the way it's intended, setting it so the console and TV match, it washes out the image and there's like a haze over the image, almost looks like you're looking at the screen with foggy eyes. EDIT: I've actually gotten used to matching the RGB settings on the TV and the source. I just set the Gamma to BT.1886. I didn't notice how much detail I was missing by crushing the blacks.
Great video! But I'm wondering: if I set Limited on console and Auto on TV, shouldn't the TV automatically switch to Limited to match the console output? Wouldn't it be the same as having limited-limited?
@@antoniofusco3670 If limited content is being pushed to the OLED, then the OLED should be using limited as this will expand the limited range to full which is why OLED present a great SDR experience.

I'm convinced that some developers have their displays mismatched when creating games. Ubisoft are a prime example for washed out hdr without mismatching black levels. Ac valhalla intro section is particularly bad example
It feels that way but from my findings (speaking directly to developers and seeing behind the scenes footage of what kind of displays they use) I think it's more a combination of using low contrast panel displays that have high minimum black levels and crush shadows naturally so looks good to them, but then when testing is done on high end consumer displays its not right but still looks better than the monitor and they haven't done an HDR workflow before and they plug in what they've done for SDR and make mistakes when converting it over. This blog post explains what may need happening elsewhere, quite technical and its part 2 of 2, the pertinent part is the bit in the box half way down/on the right side that says "REC.709 a cautionary tale", they used low contrast displays for testing.
Excellent video! Question: Is it true that using "Game Mode" has a negative effect on picture quality (local dimming is supposedly affected due to the shorter response time)?
NO, i haven't watched this video so unsure what the context is but Game mode does not have a negative effect on picture quality. Running some tvs in VRR might disable local dimming but thats a different matter. You always want to be in game mode gaming, you'll get a very natural image similar to a pc monitor.
@@shakengandulf What @neocodex says is the same I heard. With local dimming active on a LCD TV, it takes time for the dimming zones to brighten or darken to a optimum level. With Game Mode On the response time of the TV to output a frame is shorter than the time to optimally brighten or darken a dimming zone, resulting is less effective HDR. That's the theory I heard. Some say to also turn off Game Mode when watching a HDR movie on your console for that same reason.
It would be nice if these tvs had a "white level full" in these tvs. JVC projectors have a mode called "super white" where you can unclip white levels while also clipping black levels, which is a nice option especially if you want calibrate with rgb this way.
That is just that brands name for supporting wtw data which is a standard feature of the limited video format. It just comes down to the content creators to support it. Technically, limited video range can do 16-255, but most stick to the old standard of 16-235(full being 0-255.) I can't think of a usable example outside of film on DVD/Blu-ray. It's never been used in a videogame to my knowledge. That may be useful to youif your projector allows you to force it and you want to mismatch video ranges like what's being shown in this video.
Great video also. So when you are setting both ps5 and tv on limited you are not crushing your blacks and ruining your highlights? Because you suggest to either set auto - auto or limited -limited (source-tv)
As soon as I got my LG c2 I was disappointed with all my games ( PC,Xbox,ps5 ) all having a greyish haze to the picture. When I turned the black levels to limited it immediately looked better in all systems and the picture popped with great contrast , I did start getting crushed blacks but I did adjust that with the black equalizer in the C2 game bar settings. Playing with Full looked like trash and I almost returned the TV until I switched to limited
i dont own an oled and this happens to me i feel like rgb full and black level full look super washed out either you use 422 limited and black level limited or you force limited on full or that haze all over the screen wont go away
I don't have this specific tv,I have an older Qled samsung and I would recommend setting your black level to low on your tv, and on your console set the rgb to limited. Low black level and limited rgb match up correctly. Also on the TV itself for color space option I would recommend standard over native.
Step one :close the game Step two: turn off HDR step three: open the game ,go to the main menu ,graphics ,turn on Monitor SRGB Step four:play game with MUCH better blacks and colours. Tested on PS5 with a LG C2 You don’t need to mess around with any settings in your tv.
Thanks for that but your solution does not provide native HDR. It's still SDR what runs now in the HDR picture mode. BUT of course it looks much better than before.
What are the correct settings for PC with HDR? Running at FULL and Black Levels set to High is very grey/milky. I used the W11 HDR calibration and that helped a bit but still something feels a miss, like Alan Wake 2 HDR just flashes the screen very often. Should the range be set to 10-bit or 12-bit on a C9?
Black level high to be for rgb limited. You can't miss match the settings your you will get wash out blacks or black crush . All PCs are rgb full. If using a TV instead of a monitor if your tv doesn't have the option to switch between full 0-255 and limited 16-235 then you should be using limited
I think limited is best assuming you dial in your hdr settings, and contrast on your display. I have an S95B and I have my contrast lowered to 45 and contrast enhancer on low.
I have an Lg service remote for my 27GR95QE and i checked the signal that the monitor was displaying in service menu and noticed it was RGB 444 10 Bit HDR at Limited range even though I have everthing set to Full Range. I'm using a Series X. I switched the Xbox to limited range and between looks and feel it is night and day better
I've gotta CX and series X and renamed my input to PC for 444 as Vincent at HDTVTest recommended and everything is fine but want to know if on the Xbox I should change colour space to PC RGB as I always play with the recommended setting but not sure if PC RGB improves the experience?
Yeah I don’t like to do too much adjusting with my settings, I have a perfect setting however I did lower my brightness to 44 like you suggested just for this game, and I definitely could see an improvement.

If I put my video card and TV on full to gether there's a hazy washed-out gray look to the desktop in HDR mode end in games. When I set the TV to limited it looks way better and more pop and vibrant and deeper better colors. To each his own but I choose Limited.
I just realized that when setting it to limited you are clipping signal. So I said it back to full. And adjusted it to make it look just like it does in limited. Make sure you adjust your TV to full and your video card to full. Then run the HDR Optimizer tool in Windows 11 and also Tinker with your settings. You want to run both on full. Just edit your color brightness and tv settings to get what limited looks like it's possible it just takes work.
@@jarablue You can also prevent the washed out desktop on PC by going into Nvidia control Panel then desktop colour settings and increase the contrast setting. You'll see an immediate improvement though it can introduce some gradation. bear in mind it will also increase the contrast in HDR material, this can fix the raised blacks but at the expense of highlight detail, though you can reduce HDR brightness in windows display settings to compensate, and of course you shouldn't use this in well calibrated HDR content. hope this helps.
I have a 4k Monitor from LG with HDR 10 ... when i use ir the immage become blurred and it loses all the brigthning. There is just nothing i can do to fix it. Know something about that?
No, Auto-Auto is always my recommended setting but if there is no Auto use limited-limited. In this case we are talking about forcing limited on a RGB Full signal and causing a RGB Level mismatch to mitigate HDR Black Level Raise.
VRR black level raise is real, but not on OLED TV with Callisto (game black is broken with or without it). For example on SONY X900H, which supposed to be PS5 TV, they implemented VRR, but then there is a noticable black lever raise. But that is Full Array LED TV.

Still using Yellow 1 on everything in my Samsung Q80B 55"). I just want to ask you what about New Samsung brands (2022 and up) that actually have Auto, low and Normal. For me f.example I have to have set my seriesX on standard and my TV on normal to see everything correct SDR and HDR wize but when it comes to dynamic contrast ( not HDMI black level) I have to use low when watching normal apps like UA-cam and high or off when watching HDR content like Netflix or playing games in game mode .( Having the dynamic contrast turned off on SDR makes everything slightly washed out and have to set it to low so everything looks sharp and in HDR goes a little bit too dark with dynamic contrast turned off but it looks more natural which I like or I put it in Dynamic for better overall contrast depending on game. ,low dynamic contrast in HDR brightness and washe out the image too much but works exactly the opposite in SDR content like I mentioned before. I think it's not only about HDMI black level at least in Samsung new TV's and has to do a lot with dynamic contrast also since it can improve (or not depending on the content) a lot black levels without crushing the blacks. I know this is a late comment but I would like to see you responding even if it's for saying hi.😉
Limited is like the range of colors from 13 to 235 isnt it? Rgb full is 0 to 255, the full color range. You lose 13 gradients of color on the low end and 20 gradients of color on the high end. Rgb limited is definitely not worth it, just use your brain people before making recommendations lol. Use the black stabilizer to fix this issue
Forcing black level on tv no no force it on PS5 and leave tv on auto then it's a different story cause your cutting image quality going from ful on ps5l to limited on tv
@@MichaelM28 well I mean 120 is set to automatic. If I set RGB range to auto and set my Tv (LGC1) to black level auto the picture looks good, if I then manually select full then the picture becomes washed out. This tells me that it must be limited if manually changing the option causes a difference. Confusing they decided to rename ‘black level’ to video range’
The important thing to rember is that you have to match the RGB setting on your TV to the one on the console. For the Xbox Series X|/S that means leaving RGB on Standard (Recommended) and making sure that the TV's Black Level is set to Low (Limited). On the PS5 you need to set RGB to Limited and the TV's Black Level to Low (Limited). Leave the HMDI settings on Gaming/Console and do not switch to PC. If youhave the TV set to Low (Limited) and the console set to High (Full) or the TV set to High (Full) and the console set to Low (Limited) then will have incorrect contrast levels, either crushed or washed out black levels! Do not set Auto as it can misdetect the correct RGB setting which is what happens with my PS5 and LG B9 TV. If I set Auto on my PS5 then it sets the RGB to High (Full) on the console when the TV's Black Level is set to Low (Limited) by default for Game mode. It was a while before I realised this. You can tell what setting (Limited / Full) Auto is using on the console or TV by manually switching between Limited and Full. If the contrast changes while switching then you know that the other RGB setting was being used.
set to auto, works fine with my LG CX/C1/C2. You want to set to auto because range can change based on framerate and PS5 bandwidth limitations. PS5 is capped at 32Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, meaning 4K/60 HDR will achieve full RGB and full range, but 4K/120Hz HDR will drop to 422 chroma and limited range. For this reason, you dont want to lock into one range and risk having it be incorrect based on resolution and framerate of a given game. Of course, if for whatever reason your TV is getting it wrong, then you're right manually changing it - but that just hasn't been the case in my experience.
I get get awful banding using game mode on my B9, PC mode is the only way to fix it unless you drop the transfer rate to -1 or -2, plus PC mode gets you an auto setting for black level, had no issues with it auto switching for PS5, although Limited on PS5 and low on TV is a good option as well as it avoids any mismatch when output is 120hz non PC should really only be used if playing a movie or video apps.

Hey, I use your videos for callibration and I hope to get one for Gotham Knights soon, please!
I have the fix for you for the HDR. Its implemented but something got looked over on their end.
REAL Fix for black raise:
Disable HDR on ps5
Launch game
Set gamma to sRGB in game graphics setting
Enable HDR in ps5
Now you have propper HDR in Callisto Protocol, but you need to do this every time you launch the game.
Cheers from a very frozen Canadian (-45c on this day, all day.)
Insane!
Wow my mind is blown
So,which are ur recommend settings for xbox series x, i have lg c1 and i set color space pc(rgb) and AUTO on the tv. Is that right? Thanx in advance
This game has some phenomenal audio and graphics!
It does!
I was happy with the picture when turning fine tune dark areas to -30. LG B9
In hdr? It's grayed out
Setting the console to full RGB will not make it full RGB in HDR
@@lolerie people dont know movies and HDR is limited range HAHA
Great video! But I'm wondering: if I set Limited on console and Auto on TV, shouldn't the TV automatically switch to Limited to match the console output? Wouldn't it be the same as having limited-limited?
That should be the case if the TV knows what he is doing. On my CX and G2 there was never an issue with detecting the correct RGB Levels
@@GamingTech-UA-cam I see! Thank you for your reply!

Of course it does - on LCD. If you are on OLED there is no difference.
NO, i haven't watched this video so unsure what the context is but Game mode does not have a negative effect on picture quality.
Running some tvs in VRR might disable local dimming but thats a different matter.
You always want to be in game mode gaming, you'll get a very natural image similar to a pc monitor.
@@shakengandulf it does if on LCD. Local dimming cannot keep up with OLED.
@neocodex It does what?
Outside of VRR, Game mode works perfectly fine for LED tvs. You sound confused with something else.
Correct
Yeah and Auto Auto is full on SDR on my Tv and there's is like zero game that have 120fps on Ps5 so why to use limited instead of Auto that is Full ?
I was playing hdr hgig with limiter black levels on tv…. Good to know
So for playing games only on PC to Lg Oled it's recommended to use full on pc and full on tv?
Yes and use the PC Mode on the TV
Full Full or Limited Limited looking same for me on C1
Good day sir hope you can help me out i have a toshiba 43 c450mn what will you say is best full or limited and mast i turn adaptive contrast on or off
Does this advice apply for console only or PC too?
lg c3 hgig , limited - limited or AUTO AUTO? And auto auto ftda -16?
Fine Tune Dark setting is a game changer for me on PC😊
hello, what setting do you recommend on the QN95B?
normal or low or auto ?
thank you in advance
I don't have this specific tv,I have an older Qled samsung and I would recommend setting your black level to low on your tv, and on your console set the rgb to limited. Low black level and limited rgb match up correctly. Also on the TV itself for color space option I would recommend standard over native.
Hey bro just wondering what is better for pro gaming full or limited bc i feel like i see better at limited
I buy th lg c2, I can use the settings tha you use on your lg g2 or cx ?
Step one :close the game
Step two: turn off HDR
step three: open the game ,go to the main menu ,graphics ,turn on Monitor SRGB
Step four:play game with MUCH better blacks and colours.
Tested on PS5 with a LG C2
You don’t need to mess around with any settings in your tv.
Thanks for that but your solution does not provide native HDR. It's still SDR what runs now in the HDR picture mode. BUT of course it looks much better than before.
Is there a difference on a pc full or limited? Provided they are the same on both the TV and the video card?
I switched the Xbox to limited range and between looks and feel it is night and day better
i have xbox series x and lg c2....what i do? rgb limited or full ? and pc input logo or console inpit logo? thanks
I would still recommend to use the FTDA Settings if available and leave brightness untouched.
@@GamingTech-UA-cam I don’t wanna sound like a complete moron, but I am oblivious to all of this stuff and I have no idea what the FTDA settings are… 😅
@@GamingTech-UA-cam But then I have to readjust the FTDA settings every time I play a different game and then come back to this. Also, I don't know what FTDA settings I must have on my CX, you only showed with the G2.

Yeah it’s clear to me now, that this is a topic that I’m just not built for. 😅
@@585totodamgood it stands for Fine Tune Dark Areas. Its an option on the LG oleds that allows to adjust the brightness of a game without touching the brightness setting. It only works if VRR is enabled
Setting my set to Limited looks way better than sitting at the full. My 4090 is set to full and the contrast is way better when limited.

Vrr absolutely raises grays when below 120hz
I thought it was decided setting LG oled to limited and PS5 to limited was the way to go? Now changing opinion again?
Just for this game.
Still recommend to keep it rgb full on the LG G3?

Hi GamingTech. First I want to tell you how amazing your videos are and how actually you are the only one that knows what it's talking about when It comes to TV'S and gaming here on UA-cam ( except couple like HDTV test , digital trend, etc but even them are way too purists when It comes to TV's tips.I want to have true beautiful color pop and immersive experience when watching TV not setting my TV to look like a low end 2000 tv with yellowish tint on it.🤣.
Callisto Protocol got on update today and as expected no fix for broken HDR 👎 they will never fix it i guess i have to accept that.
Forcing black level on tv no no force it on PS5 and leave tv on auto then it's a different story cause your cutting image quality going from ful on ps5l to limited on tv
I just leave the PS5, Series X and C1 all set to auto. I’m sure they know what they’re doing. (They use limited automatically)
PS5 is using RGB FULL in 60Hz and HDR ;-)

Disabling 120hz in the PS5 settings has now caused RGB Full to be the automatic choice. So confusing 😂
There is a New 10gb update out now... maybe Problems fixed
Well, with full RGB range, you can get more accurate results when calibrating HDR on PS4 & PS5.
set to auto, works fine with my LG CX/C1/C2.
Without changing the hdmi input to pc for example in lg's oled tvs you dont get the full chroma.
Strange my Auto is always Full Full in SDR dunno how it can be mismatched in Auto settings
Run into the same issue with RDR2
C2s don't have CX's Black Level raise Settings? wow LG screwed ya
Every TV IS DIFFERENT
how about RGB full combined with black level low
That's the problem ;-) Never mismatch RGB Levels
black level low is the same as lack level limited so you are getting the same issue
RGB Full wins again 💪💪💪
Reshade is the only way to fix the washed out look without destroying specular highlights
The FTDA Settings are not destroying any Specular Highlights and you can get a pretty good result.
