I bought Fuji for the JPEG but switched back to RAW pretty soon after because I always tend to be super nitpicky when it comes to my edits and want to have it exactly the way I want instead of leaving that to the camera.

I'm doing a mixture now. Using JPEGS to get a fast result, and adding the RAWS later if the situation calls for it. I find Fuji places a kind of exposure curve in both the JPEG and RAW images that I really like. Like a S-curve.

Do you know what the best part is using Capture One for Fujifilm files? Capture One is using the used film simulation for the RAW file straight from the start.

I just wanted to say that by the end of every one of your videos I am smiling. It doesn’t matter how 18% grey I start, you move people’s vibrancy sliders up. It’s like Fuji/photography/therapy. I don’t even own a Fuji (yet) just wondering what to jump into the system with. Thinking xt2 or xt30. The v small size of the xt30 may feel too small to me coming from a canon 7dmk2. Thank you for all your efforts and humour and of course the sharing of you skills.

Omar, I know this is an old video, but hopefully you will see this question. Have you ever had a situation where you actually love your raw SOOC and your jpg film sim just didn't do it for you? Rarely do I like a raw over a jpg, but I had that happen on a recent trip. Photos of my kid and cousins looked way better raw. So I just ended up saving the raw file and not editing it at all. But I am not sure how to get that look, should I look at the details in LR or something to see what the numbers were? Any suggestions on this would be appreciated!

You make many good videos, but I really don't feel you prooved RAW files to be better than JPEGs. They may be, but you just showed us that if you don't edit the one and you do edit the other, the one which gets edited will end out better or just as good. One could say you just showed us that editing a picture may improve it. But that is now what your title tells us.

Though I always loved your videos but Capture One pro 20 does the exact same thing.
If you use a film style in camera that is what you would see from the in camera jpg - which means also the jpg embedded in the RAW file for an instant view - and so is also applied as the 'Auto' in the curve selection by Capture One. For most cameras the default 'Auto' setting will usually pick the (generic for the camera body in use) 'Film Standard' Curve which will typically be a curve that Phase will have developed to provide a starting point 'generally agreeable look' for the RAW file.

I am asking this because recently I bought a X-T1 and I am a bit disappointed with the IQ. The jpegs (main reason I bought the Fuji) are a bit bad in the sense that at 800 > ISO < 1600 the colours look like water colour. Is this normal? Even at ISO400 for example I can notice slightly this effect.

The free Silkypix based Raw Convertor software is very good. The Interface takes a lot of getting used to but over the years of updates it has got better. The Fujifilm color simulations in that program are very close to the Jpegs out of camera and also the Lens Modulation is auto matically applied to0. • @jakeduggan3854

Lightroom's RAW importer causes worming in the image which is why Fuji shooters don't use it. Capture One is pretty expensive, especially if you purchase the pro version. I like using the Fuji X-RAW Studio, 100% free, which utilises your cameras image processor making your image a true Fuji JPG. You can fine tune the white balance, colour, vibrancy, contrast etc. I prefer to use it over Capture One especially using the Acros film simulation. Fine tuning, adding gradients, dodge and burn can be done using DarkTable or Gimp directly to the processed JPG. I used to be a Lightroom user but their work around for Fuji TIF files is ridiculous; they recommend that you convert it to a DNG file. Every other image editor doesn't require you to do any conversions including the free and open source ones out there. Adobe is asleep behind the wheel and it's slow, old, clunky Lightroom is miles behind the competition. Having spoken to many photographers that use lightroom, the general reasoning for not moving on is because of Photoshop. I hope my long ramblings/interaction helps boost you up higher on the UA-cam recommended list.

Are there any disadvantages to Fuji X RAW studio, or limitations? I am fairly new to this. Thanks.

    • @jakeduggan3854
      @jakeduggan3854 4 роки тому

@@afisher555 the Fuji-X Raw converter is a great tool that not many people talk about. It's aimed at people who love the true Fujifilm JPG out of camera but don't want to shoot JPG as RAW gives you more data to play with. After you have installed the program, move your photos to the PC from your camera. In camera, change the USB mode to USB RAW convert. When you open the Fuji X-RAW Studio application it should say that it is connected to your camera. From there, in the program, navigate to the photos you took on your PC. You can increase/decrease exposure, play with contrast, white balance etc. When you click convert your Fuji camera does all the processing giving you a true Fuji JPG.
What it won't do is spot removals, gradients, dodge and burn and other advanced things that Capture One, darkTable etc can do. For me Fuji X-Raw studio is a fantastic starting point for getting the levels correct and colour grading (film simulations). I compared Acros with lightroom, capture one and Darktable, the cameras version was the best. I spent $1000+ on my camera, I'd expect it to have a fantastic dedicated image processor.

I'm not sure I see the purpose of comparing a SOOC JPEG to an edited RAW. Why not also edit the JPEG to make the point that for most photographs you don't really need the RAW when you can get the same look with a smaller JPEG?
The point of Fuji's JPEGs being so good is that you can share them straight away without any editing, but if you are going to edit them I think it should be acknowledged for most people and most photos you don't really need the flexibility of a RAW file, unless you are trying to recover really dark shadows or highlights.

For Acros, I normally just use the jpeg and do a slight edit if needed or crop but man nothing looks as good as Acros straight out of a fuji camera...except the really Acros and I'm looking forward to trying the Acros II once it goes on sale in the US.

I'm backward! I never shoot JPG...always raw! and yes, I use Lightroom! Maybe I should shoot JPG? NAW...I always wonder why folks would shoot JPG when these cameras were meant to take RAW!
Guess it's easier and quicker, especially for Instagram?

Me Too.. Raw and Lightroom.. I went out on New Years and for fun shot jpeg with film simulation tryin to see what all the fuss was about.. fortunately the XT2 has double card so I had the RAW files also

For 90% of the images jpg is good enough, the keepers, I go back and tweak the raw.
Friend's random snaps, jpg good enough. For a portrait shoot, I shoot both raw and jpg gives the benefits of both worlds...
That's why I shoot both, as it does save some time.

Yesterday you betray use by using other gear for professional usage. Now you break our heart for using fuji raw in lightroom. What will you do next?

Ok today I opened up my jpeg and raw versions of the same image from a sunrise. I matched the film simulation on my raw file and it looks identical to the jpeg without any adjustments.

i shoot JPEG only from my gfx 50r (dont have time to edit 300picures every time ) raw is better even on Medium Format the reason is my JPG is 8 bits, raw has 14 bits color Depth edited and saved as TIFF i'm getting amazing results but 160mg files

I think most of the RAWs you showed looked better than the jpegs, honestly. I don't shoot Fuji, but the jpegs looked oversaturated and lacked micro contrast to my eye. Could just be UA-cam being UA-cam though and compressing the crap out of your shots also. 🤷‍♂️
