My grandmother was a Christian and when I first played halo 3's campaign at launch in 2007, she sat with me and watched and she was the first one who pointed out the religious symbolism to me. Her first throwaway comment was "He said they're called the covenant, which means they're being held to an oath with God" and she kind of just shook her head like "Mhm, I see what they're doing" She made my grandpa come and watch with her and they talked together about it, but my grandpa was only focused on how cool he thought the marines and vehicles looked. He thought I was playing some sort of game based on Aliens because he thought the pelican looked like the drop ship from the movies. I miss them.
It was. Your Grandpa was right, Bungie were inspired by Alien with regards to making Halo, and it affected all of their designs. They also kept some things from their previous game, Marathon, including the Marathon Class Cruiser as a reference, and AI.
As a Christian this is really cool to me. The promotional slogan for Halo 3 was "Believe". And in the bible the passages John 1:1-7 says as follows 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might (*Believe*) Seeing as Bungies favorite number is 7 and Gods number is 7 and Halo 3s promotional word was "Believe" and as you can see the final word from John 1:1-7 is BELIEVE... This cannot be coincidence...
His number does not come from the book of John but the book of Revelation 1:17 NIV Reads "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last."

This also works very well with greek mythology too. The precursors are the titans, murdered by the forerunners, "gods", who then had children with men called demigods that also took on titans and gods. Chief and the spartans, (Spartans being greek) being demigods makes sense, and puts forunners, who especially after 4, (and by a pseudo extent the covenant) are his enemies. And of course, the forerunners left behind the prometheans, which also ties into greek mythos quite obviously. Cortana could also be compared to a muse, and johns voyages to destroy the covenant could at least loosely compare to the odyssey and odysius, maybe or Hercules. Also, in greek myth, zues is the god of thunder and odysius' father. Chief wears mjiolir armor, which references thors hammer, who is also the god of thunder. Somewhat indirect, but indicative of chiefs significance since odysius defeats some of the gods. Lots of connections if you look hard enough.
Another way the "Pale Horse" references back to Master Chief is that "pale" is sometimes mistranslated as white but originally refered to a light or sickly green. So in that sense, Chief in his standard Mjolnir armor is a dead ringer for the fourth horseman, as the Covenant would attest.

I grew up Catholic, and Halo was my favorite franchise and seeing all the religious symbolism in the game just made it better. It gave everything in the game a whole different context to look through. I also love Wendigoon, so this collab video is perfect for this topic. Also you totally should do a video about ODST and it's connections to Dante's Inferno. Gonna have to chime in as an Orthodox Christian real quick. Apologies for the somewhat lengthy Lore dump, but Wendigoon (as much as I love him) really kind of botched the Great Schism explanation. Essentially, before the schism, most of Christianity was united as one church. A variety of issues over time lead to a growing division between the East and West. That division was multifaceted, and included political issues (the fall of western Rome vs the continuation of Eastern Rome under the Byzantine Empire), linguistic division (Greek persisting in the East vs the increasing prominence of Latin in the West), Military conflict (various wars, including terrible betrayals from the west against the east during the crusades), theological issues (most prominently a controversy over the "filoque," an alteration made to the Nicene Creed by Rome and rejected by the East), liturgical (conflicts over how the eucharist, or communion as its often called, was performed, along with various issues like the calanadar and whether or not priests could be married), and ecclesiastical (the biggest issue being the role of the Bishop of Rome. Rome claimed that it had authority over the entire church, while the East insisted that while Rome had a place of importance and precedence, it was not in authority over other bishops.) All of this came to a head when the Pope excommunicated the bishop of Constantinople. The bishop of Constantinople returned the favor, and due to the issues mentioned above (and more besides), the actions were never reversed, despite a few attempts being made over the following centuries. With the fall of Byzantium to the Muslim Ottoman Empire, Orthodoxy became even more geographically removed from the West than it already was, and communication largely ceased. It wouldn't be until the modern period that the question of the division and potential reunion of East and West would even be raised, let alone studied and examined. If you ask a Catholic, they will say that the Orthodox rejected the ancient authority of the Bishop of Rome and left the historic faith. If you ask an Orthodox, we would say that we rejected the innovations of Papal Supremecy, and it was the Catholics who left the historic faith. If a third party (such as a protestant like Wendigoon) is to summarize it, it would be better to say the historic church split, rather than claiming that one left the other. Aside from that, great video! Please forgive the small essay. Much love to the Catholics, Protestants, (and even any heathens!) who read to the end.
10:44 This is incredibly misinformative. The Great Schism of 1054 was caused by a large part of the Western Church (which became Roman Catholicism) wanting to change the Nicene creed to include the Filioque, a change in the doctrine of the Trinity saying that the Spirit precedes both from the Father AND the Son. The Eastern Church (which became Orthodoxy) disagreed with changing the already established beliefs of the Church and chose to split off from Rome. After that the Catholic church started adding heresies on top of heresies, such as papal infallibility, purgatory, indulgences and what have you, while the Eastern Orthodox Church remained steadfast in remaining unchanged since the Early Church. Of course there were several other reasons for why the West and East split, but the Filioque was the final straw that broke the camel's back.
That's why the campaign is so important. I'm 43, I played halo 1 in 2001 on an aircraft carrier and have passed this game down to my 3 daughters, now 26, 21, and 16. Master chief and this story deserved so much more than what it has become.
I mean I wouldn't say the Orthodox broke off from the Catholics. More like there was always a separation between the eastern and western parts of the church mirroring the split between western and eastern parts of the Roman empire. So it's more accurate to say they quite literally split from each other
I really appreciate your perspective on the ancient world. Its very easy for us to dismiss ancient worldviews, but therr is immense value in putting in the effort to understand them. You've earned a new subscriber!
such a weird feeling where youtubers with their own niche that i also happen to watch when i come across them collaborate together is like im being watched lmaoo love this video though
I think it kills all organic matter right? Of which the flood are made. The intent being absolute extermination of the outbreak without room for the possibility of future outbreaks a more targeted weapon might leave.
LUC I was doing some wondering about the flood Back when Bungie planned on Forerunners being ancient humans, what would their first encounter with the flood have looked like? And when exactly? This was obviously before the precursors were a concept and before the expanded lore of the Forerunners as we know under 343 But I was thinking, Ancient humanity (forerunners) developed enough to have galaxy spanning mega structures, so in their exploration of the stars did they just happen to stumble upon the floods home world? Anyways I thought it was an interesting question
The point of the flood's origin was to be mysterious, never explained. Your imagination and creativity would be better than any concrete origin that bungie could've come up with. 343's need to explain everything ruined a lot of halo, imo.
In my head canon, the flood never had a home world within the physical. Consider how the precursors died, their spirits have went into the spiritual, which these precursors have more than likely cursed the universe all because of the Forerunners, damning every being to a flood invasion. We do know that the Halo arrays are within our galaxy, The Milky Way, but what if the Forerunners reached further? What of those tribes of Forerunners? Would humanity ever reach to colonise every habitable planet in Milky Way, just to expand further? What wouldd haappen if they DO find evidence of Forerunners living OUTSIDE of the Milky Way? These questions arise because of the importance of the weapons. Has the flood reached outside of the Milky Way? Or were there patches around the universe where the flood started popping up and other Human-like creatures are facing similar struggles? Those are the questions that pop in my head the more I know of the Halo universe, as well as being the oly questions in my head once I'm deep in the lore.
Idk if this was intentional or not, but the Halo rings are dotted with circular lights across the outside and the ending cutscene in the control room of Halo 2 shows a hologram of all the rings together, circling around each other, seemingly in reference to the Ophanim.
Speaking about the revelations comparison, Remember the first Halo 3 trailer? Gods & demons… i am your shield i am your sword….. this is the way the world ends… Cortana is giving John a vision of how the world ends with the portal to the ark opening! 😮
i think the best interpretation of the james 1:17 - chief connection is the line 'every good gift and every perfect gift', as he is noted many times as being the luckiest man. perhaps that luck came from somehwere
Small correction to wendigoon: the great schism was not due to the orthodox separating from Catholicism. It was due to the western Christians under the bishop of Rome adding to the creed, changing some doctrines, and then threatening to excommunicate the eastern Christians who said they had no authority to add to the creed w/o a council.

Haven't seen this video yet but last night I literally had a dream that Wendi claimed that The Arbiter was a stand-in for Saul/Paul and if that isnt in the video we riot Edit: ... ...
I actually went a very different direction on the whole 'John 117' bit. I looked at it differently, and saw it as 'Genesis(or 'first book') 17'. Which looks a bit odd, until you look a little closer and follow along to the following sections, and see it mentions a covenant, a promised land, sons who will inherit, and viewing the one providing the covenant as 'god', as well as mentions of people being cut off for breaking the covenant, and how it is with the god's money, the god's blessing, that they will prosper. Which ties in pretty tightly with the overall structure of how Forerunners tie in with the cultures in the halo franchise. This ties in with chief being specifically given the title of 'reclaimer' and how he 'leads' the peoples into their 'new kingdoms' in the time of peace after the events of the Ark, as well as how the covenant and the humans could both be called 'inheritors' of the forerunners, but how only the humans were judged worthy by what is left of the forerunners (namely the monitors, as I'm sticking to Bungie lore here), as being the true inheritors. You can also look at Genesis 1:17, which can be interpreted multiple ways. Either as the forerunners having left their remnants (halos and other installations, as well as tech caches) as guiding lights, or as John and the other Spartans (or you could trend it even wider and include say, the Arbiter) being those guiding lights in times of darkness. Either way, I didn't see it as directly referencing John as a character, but more his role within the narrative, that being a beacon of hope in the darkest times, and a shatterer of past paradigms. Yes, there is the technical blasphemy interpretation of the Chief as a Messianic figure, but he really did become something of one, to a degree that is even occasionally hinted at in-universe by way of things like his superior officers barely bothering to question it when he goes and does something out of the norm, or the blind trust placed in him to not only do the right thing, but to WIN in doing so, by basically every member of the UNSC and later the Sangheili. You could even look closer at the designation Chief uses intermittently in the series of 'Sierra-117' Sierra being phonetic for S, which is the 19th letter of the alphabet, pointing to psalms. Where Psalm 11, line 7 is about the upright (or righteous, as it were), seeing gods face. Which happens in Halo 4, if we want to expand out to 343 canon, or sticking to bungie canon, would imply Chief represents the ideal the forerunners held, and in living the ideal, 'sees' them better than anyone else. Like with a lot of biblical references, even within the bible itself, sometimes you have to think a bit sideways to find meaning, and what has meaning or relevance is open to interpretation. Unfortunately, the only ones who could say for certain what was meant with that (if there even was a specific reference there), would be the ones who were part of the conceptualization at Bungie, and as far as I can tell, none of them are going to say anything.
John 1:17 could be a reference to how the Covenant represents an old testament thing, but Chief as a symbol of humanity represents the new testament and a fulfilment of the law sort of thing, etc. As was explained further in Halo 4, where the Forerunners explain that the Mantle was given to specifically to humanity and not the Covenant nor Forerunners, thus this again echoes John 1:17, that the Mantle (God's covenant, so to speak) may have initially fallen to "Moses" (the Forerunners, who usurped it, which is another possible Biblical reference, or the Covenant before humanity truly found it, though the Covenant couldn't use the tech and like in the days of Moses relied on prophets), but that "truth and grace" comes through Jesus ( humanity rightfully assuming the Mantle, "truth and grace" not necessarily because humans are the best per se, but because it was what the Precursors actually wished to happen). So as the verse says the Law came from Moses, that could be seen as the might of the Forerunners and Covenant simply overpowering humanity and assuming the Mantle directly through their own ability and will, but when it says truth and grace comes from Jesus that could be saying that it was the humans who were predestined and actually chosen to inherit the Mantle above all others, so humanity gets the Mantle based on grace whereas the others don't. Like you say there's lots of interpretation possible, and only the original writer could know, but I think that verse can fit the overarching lore of the Halo series.
As a Christian, halo has become my favorite video game franchise because of its religious settings. It’s a shame, the newer games don’t hold up in comparison
It’s important to remember, historically, that good storytelling draws inspiration from religious texts and ancient epics. It’s a pattern repeated over and over again Every good story is, as the trope goes, the retelling of the gospel if you will Or retelling of Greek mythology Or whatever These are symbols deeply embedded into the DNA of modern society
A welcoming crossover episode indeed and I'd love to see a videos about the DI/ODST parallels! I'd heard about them, but never actually looked into it myself. Additionally, I never thought about it, but Halo likely had a large impact on my journey out of christianity.
This video is gonna be awesome, I started my Christian journey around the same time I started playing halo it honestly help me build my faith, with the different allegories and music (“The Maw” is so angelic) it really always helped me have hope.
Just to clarify, the reason the orthodox split was for good reason, what was the Catholic Church kept changing things and what are now the orthodox disagreed, orthodox Christian are non denominational as they are the closest to the original church, they aren’t another religion, but the closest one can get to the original church.
I'm a Christian who has LOVED Halo my whole life, and I agree with Master Chief's name/designation being based on John 1:17 and Jesus Himself. Chief is called the Reclaimer (Jesus was the Redeemer), he freed captives (Jesus frees captive; Luke 4:18/Isaiah 61), he destroyed the flood (Jesus freed us from sin; 1 Corinthians 15:56-57), said "It's Finished" at the end of H3 (Jesus's last words before death on the cross and eventual resurrection) etc. The story of Halo is amazing and we love it, but the story of Jesus - a true story, that God has been weaving together throughout history in the lives of all people - is WHY we love these types of stories. God has set a hope in our hearts for a great story, and whether you know it or not, you are living in it! And the only hope we have to be on the victorious side over all of the sin and pain we experience and contribute to is surrendering to King Jesus and trusting Him for our salvation.
Rev 1:17 "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last." That division was multifaceted, and included political issues (the fall of western Rome vs the continuation of Eastern Rome under the Byzantine Empire), linguistic division (Greek persisting in the East vs the increasing prominence of Latin in the West), Military conflict (various wars, including terrible betrayals from the west against the east during the crusades), theological issues (most prominently a controversy over the "filoque," an alteration made to the Nicene Creed by Rome and rejected by the East), liturgical (conflicts over how the eucharist, or communion as its often called, was performed, along with various issues like the calanadar and whether or not priests could be married), and ecclesiastical (the biggest issue being the role of the Bishop of Rome. Rome claimed that it had authority over the entire church, while the East insisted that while Rome had a place of importance and precedence, it was not in authority over other bishops.)
All of this came to a head when the Pope excommunicated the bishop of Constantinople.
Glad I wasn’t the only who chimed in on that, wendigoon description was very lopsided and almost entirely inaccurate.
So they basically orthodox split from the Catholic Church which is what he said… got it
@Rednaz03 thats the catholic take :)
Very well said. I was very disappointed whenever Wendigoon said that
Wrong

This crossover wasn't on my 2024 bingo card, but I'm all for it.
That's why the campaign is so important. I'm 43, I played halo 1 in 2001 on an aircraft carrier and have passed this game down to my 3 daughters, now 26, 21, and 16. Master chief and this story deserved so much more than what it has become.
Wendigoon having Jschlatt levels of unexpected crossovers is what I'm here for
😂
Love seeing two of my favorite tubers making amazing content together!!!
Never in my life did i think HiddenXperia and Wendigoon would do a collab
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcomed one.
Thank you brother, Merry Christmas
I mean I wouldn't say the Orthodox broke off from the Catholics. More like there was always a separation between the eastern and western parts of the church mirroring the split between western and eastern parts of the Roman empire. So it's more accurate to say they quite literally split from each other
I really appreciate your perspective on the ancient world. Its very easy for us to dismiss ancient worldviews, but therr is immense value in putting in the effort to understand them.

Excuse me what? Wendigoon talking about the Flood? What timeline are we in?
we've returned to the true timeline
just hit play and this is already my favorite video ive seen on your channel in a while
What a wild crossover.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
The Covenant referenced in Halo is the Covenant to Noah after the flood. The rainbow is the Covenants heirarchy of colors
The crossover event I didnt know I wanted, but definately needed
These two doing a Collab wasn’t expected but very welcome
The colab we didn't deserve, but the one we needed
such a weird feeling where youtubers with their own niche that i also happen to watch when i come across them collaborate together is like im being watched lmaoo love this video though
"It doesn't kill the flood, it kills their food" 2:57 clearly showing The Flood being killed by the Halo pulse. Lol Nice job 343.
I think it kills all organic matter right? Of which the flood are made. The intent being absolute extermination of the outbreak without room for the possibility of future outbreaks a more targeted weapon might leave.
babe wake up, new youtuber collab just dropped
LUC I was doing some wondering about the flood
Back when Bungie planned on Forerunners being ancient humans, what would their first encounter with the flood have looked like? And when exactly? This was obviously before the precursors were a concept and before the expanded lore of the Forerunners as we know under 343
But I was thinking, Ancient humanity (forerunners) developed enough to have galaxy spanning mega structures, so in their exploration of the stars did they just happen to stumble upon the floods home world?
If the Legacy council of the old Bungie devs convenes, this video would be a good starting point to get their take on real life references.
I’ve never set an alarm for a video until today
I’d love to see your ODST/Inferno take! I’d also be curious to hear a take on Halo: Infinite and Song of Roland!
0:46 NOW I HAVE TO SAY THE WHOLE SPEECH TO MYSELF
Idk if this was intentional or not, but the Halo rings are dotted with circular lights across the outside and the ending cutscene in the control room of Halo 2 shows a hologram of all the rings together, circling around each other, seemingly in reference to the Ophanim.
Nothing like watching Wendigoon talk about religious symbolism
Ending the year with a BANG!! What a cross over. Love both you guys
Ah, yes, 2 of my favorite creators of youtube of 2 of my latests hyperfixations NICE.
Speaking about the revelations comparison, Remember the first Halo 3 trailer?
Gods & demons… i am your shield i am your sword….. this is the way the world ends… Cortana is giving John a vision of how the world ends with the portal to the ark opening! 😮
Wendigoon, mind telling me what you’re doing on this channel?
Sir, explaining Halos religious meanings
Wendigoon doing side quests now
Man Ive been waiting for this video for a while! Hopefully we can get a couple more collab videos
I did not expect this collab but im glad it happened.
Thanks so much for this!
i think the best interpretation of the james 1:17 - chief connection is the line 'every good gift and every perfect gift', as he is noted many times as being the luckiest man. perhaps that luck came from somehwere
Featuring *WHO* !?!
Oh dis gon b gud.
*Sees who is collabing with Xperia
"Wendigoon? Are you sure?"
Bonus joke
Reddit and others similar: tries to cancel Wendigoon, fails
Wendigoon: were it so easy
Thank you xperia for letting wendigoon be your friend, he makes the rest of the neighbors uncomfortable
Haven't seen this video yet but last night I literally had a dream that Wendi claimed that The Arbiter was a stand-in for Saul/Paul and if that isnt in the video we riot
Edit: ...
Orthodoxy Mentioned 👍☦
Love it guys! Always my favorite to dive into the religious significance of such a religiously inspired series!
“Never stop Gooning.”
-wendiGoon, Gooning Master
A part 2 of this as well as the Dante’s inferno odst video would be epic!
As a Christian, halo has become my favorite video game franchise because of its religious settings.
It’s a shame, the newer games don’t hold up in comparison
It’s important to remember, historically, that good storytelling draws inspiration from religious texts and ancient epics.
It’s a pattern repeated over and over again
Every good story is, as the trope goes, the retelling of the gospel if you will
Or retelling of Greek mythology
Or whatever
These are symbols deeply embedded into the DNA of modern society
1st comment, can I get a pin lol? Also I love the idea for this video, because, as a Christian, I do note a lot of religious relation to Halo.
This is not the collab I was expecting but it is greatly needed
11:15 The Catholic Church separated from the Orthodox Church, not the other way around.
Great video though!
"The best source on the internet" lmao
This might be halos most important and looked over subject
This was a collab i didn't know i needed
11:19 what the actual F is he saying here? Asjdhakhssktomuchathubehonestwithayouu ? The lisp is CRAZY 😂
Oh my god… my childhood video game franchise and one of my favorite UA-camrs are coming together •o•
Just to clarify, the reason the orthodox split was for good reason, what was the Catholic Church kept changing things and what are now the orthodox disagreed, orthodox Christian are non denominational as they are the closest to the original church, they aren’t another religion, but the closest one can get to the original church.
Nah not really, that’s what orthodox members say but most of their apologetics are based on lies sadly
The christian youthgroup I went to as a kid had Halo CE for us to play in LAN parties...
It makes so much sense now.
Rev 1:17
"When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last."
I always thought this verse was referenced to master chief. Cause John wrote the book revelations 😅 and for what we new at the time masterchief was the last spartan ❤❤❤
This is a crazy colab I didn’t know I wanted
An unexpected but well welcomed collaboration
been checking your channel ever since you casually announced the collab.
worth the wait
Two of my favorite creators on the internet!!!
Make the ODST/Dante video! When I played the game I was too young to know what Inferno was.
FINALLY ever since you mentioned this video being a thing I’ve been waiting patiently
I don't think that John 117 isn't supposed to have us interpret Chief as a Messianic figure, but more aptly a savior, because he is one.
my only reaction to wendigoon being here is: "a surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one"
My two favorite content creators in one vid this is definitely a Christmas Gift
This Wendigoon cryptid is appearing everywhere.
