  • Hey Good People,
    We had another ticking 3.6 Pentastar in the shop this past week. If you are one of my subscribers you know that I do these jobs a lot. This one just happen to be on a Dodge Durango. The lifter tick is very common among the Dodge and Chrysler products that have the 3.6 Pentastar and the 5.7 Hemi's
    Follow me along in this video as I get this vehicle back purring like a kitten. As always, I hope you learn something from this video. Leave your 2 cents in the comments, I love to hear from you guys.
    Your favorite Mechanic,
    Alex

    Sorry that your scanner got crunched. Years ago, a friend was working on his car (1980 chevy Nova) when the hood unexpectedly closed on his hand. He was working on the car alone and was actually trapped for around a half an hour until someone came over and opened the hood to free his hand. I doubt if anything like that ever happened to you. Thanks for all the great videos Alex.

      Seen many hemis crash valves.
      To prevent this, Open the hood and have someone start it, if you hear a tap for like 3 seconds, then stops. Get it serviced.

    Really love the channel and enjoyed this video. I have a 2018 Durango GT with 47k miles and I feel like a I hear a slight noise similar to this but could be something else. Will get it looked at. You guys seemed to do a kick a** job. How much did you charge out of curiosity?

    @AlexTheCarDoctor I have been binging your videos and I hear the scanner heartbreak in the recent ones.That scanner appears to just be an android device. I am curious if you plug a mouse and or keyboard into the USB port, does it let you control it?
    If so, you can probably get away with using it like that, particularly if you value the functionality. If you pickup a Logitech K400 keyboard, it has the mouse and keyboard built into one dongle. Mount it to a cart and you could almost roll with it 😂

    The few ive seen kill the cam also wiped out journals on cam holders and bearing on lower end. Even with a lite bit of cam wear. Noticed lot of bearing debris in oil.

  • @ricebike

    IDK how you isolated that lifter noise vs the evap valve ticking from the previous video...just from experience
    Or even from an exhaust manifold ticking
    I'm just a DIYer so learning something from your experiences with this pentastar / Fiat engine
    Dorman does make a decent oil filter housing and cooler out of cast aluminum, so that is a good aftermarket part
    Also heard that oil filter housing doesn't have an anti drain back valve?
    So, is the lack of oil during cold starting is the main cause of why these are developing valve lifter ticking?

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  4 місяці тому +2

      I normally find the valve and touch it to make sure it’s not ticking or simply unplug it so it won’t activate. I also look at my scanner to see if it’s activated.

    Evap purge valve’s are notorious for making a clicking ticking sound that could be easily misdiagnosed for bad lifters and cams.

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  4 місяці тому +1

      This is true. 💯 I normally do these three things: touch the purge valve to feel if it’s activating, I sometimes unplug it to deactivate completely so I can listen to the vehicle, or use my scanner to see if it’s on, if it’s on I turn it off with the scanner to listen to the engine.

    • @adamb84

      Evap purge valve is not that loud. That is engine noise, I know because I'm going through something similar, but my Honda is 250,000 miles. God bless

    So I have a great question with us growing up in the '90s Of course I've had Chrysler vehicles all my life any range from a LeBaron to the neon to three intrepids My family's owned all sorts of Chrysler vehicles we've never ever had any of these problems with the overhead valves when they first came out like the first generation 3.5 l the 2.0 liter that went in the Neon Stratus lower base cars never heard of of this ever Now I mean across the board this is all your hearing about from all the manufacturers What is with this Why have they gone to a different design of the top of the motor and not like as a 1993 to 2010 Chrysler 3.5 l? Mind you my 1997 had 250,000 mi on it when I got rid of it same with my neon original engines and original transmission!

      The only thing I liked about the early to mid 1990s Dodge/Chrysler/ Plymouth vehicles is some came with non interference engines.
      So when the timing belt snaps, just realign the timing marks and slap on the new belt 😅

      @@ricebike I'm sure it was a 3.0 liter made by Mitsubishi which was complete utter 💩 One of my mom's caravans had that engine in it never experience head gasket problems with any of my vehicles but you have to realize like my sister's Voyager was a 1995 Plymouth Voyager with a 2.5 l in it The spark plugs got stuck in the head It was $1,200 to put a new head on it It was worth it It drove for another 5 years after that try that with a newer car these days 10 plus thousand dollars for a new engine cuz they're disposable! No more CAST IRON BLOCKS! So think about it I had gasket isn't all that bad compared to the junk that they're making nowadays really I've known so many people with kias Toyota's Honda's Chevys Fords newer Chrysler vehicles all having major engine issues never remember hearing that in the '90s or the 2000s except for the 2.7 l
