I have a 533 that I bought as my 'Y2K if everything falls apart' backup kit. I put standard unleaded fuel into it in 1999, and I use it very very rarely just for fun when I'm having a pyromaniac/BBQ episode. I have not actually used a full tank of fuel yet, but I bought some fuel (ASPEN4 - additive free unleaded) the other day and replaced the urine-coloured stuff that the petrol had turned into over TWENTY THREE YEARS. Before I changed the fuel the stove was still burning perfectly blue and clear. You've got to hand it to Coleman!

I camped this summer and used 25 year old Coleman white gas. No problem at all!

I bought it second hand renewed the mantles and stored the lamp for 2 years in the garage. After seeing your UA-cam video I took the lamp and gave it a try. Pumped 40 times, a lighter and bingo there she was. I love the reliability of Coleman products.

I’ve done a couple videos over the years on these, these lanterns act all different. I’m not too happy with my early productions because I didn’t know enough and I think I assumed too much. They should be lit outdoors because you need to know how each one works. I’m rebuilding a 1955 228E now that was my grandfathers. These are fantastic lanterns.

I was just starting to worry about the usability of an unopened can of Coleman fuel I keep in the garage that I bought three years ago. I guess I won't worry so much now! Thanks!

Turning the lantern off runs the cleaning needle through the generator tip. That might be why it worked better the second time.

Yup! I just bought one on eBay. It’s about 15 years old. The guy picked it up at an estate sale and shipped it directly to me WITH A FULL TANK of fuel! Leaked in the package, made the mailman sick.
I put mantels in it, pumped it. It fired right up! There was some residue visible in the fuel tank; however, the fuel does burn just as good as my new Coleman fuel.
Burned it on high for 30 minutes just to flush the generator out.

You need to clean the check valve in the bottom of the pump barrel, because as soon as you unscrew the pump shaft, light dims; which means check valve is not retaining pressure.

how do u recommend cleaning the check valve?

@@jamesjutte6119 i used brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner. Take the pump and the shaft rod out make sure there's no pressure on the system and spray the check valve really well and let set over night. If that doesn't work then you'll need to remove the check valve. Which will require a special tool

I am currently burning camp fuel that is 23 years old. It works well and has no off odors as though it was oxidized.

I think the check valve is stuck open. I got quite a few lanterns myself.
Ranging from early 30’s to current models. Love um all!

+Angry Daddy Bird just re tested both lanterns and the issues I had are gone. I do agree though the check valve is sticky...

I use PRI-G on my Dual Fuel 295 when is in storage. I discovered PRI-G back in 2002 during a visit to a NAPA store in New Orleans, LA. They also have PRI-D for Diesel engines.

Maybe I missed it but did you re-oil the pump before replacing it? My 2 Colemans didn't hold pressure either. I re-oiled them and perfect since.

So Coleman fuel doesn’t have an expiration date? How old can it be to safely use?

I’ve used 25 year old Coleman fuel with no problems.

I would rather use an oil lamp. Any device that forces you to jerk it off before you can use it is silly in my book.
