Excellent video! I refer to the groove where the lid rests as the moat, just like a castle moat. Also, to ensure that the moat water does not spill into the crock when water is added, either the inner ridge of the moat needs to be 1 or 2 mm higher or cut a groove (1 or 2 mm deep) in the outer ridge. As one viewer mentioned, I intend to make a weight disc on future crocks. Thanks much Mikkel.
Thank you for taking the time to present you process in such an informative and precise way. Greetings from a folk potter in Kentucky! I am excited to get to making ferment crocks for kimchi, kombucha and sauerkraut!
Yes - recently decided to stop buying sauerkraut and make my own so I needed to make a few crocks first. Researched and basically came up with the same design except I put lug handles on the side and a loop style handle to accommodate my sometimes weak hands and I also made a pour spout on the outer rim for easy dumping of water without having to tip it far. Now I just need to make some sauerkraut or pickled onions. I used a stone ware but my friend suggested to use porcelain for the weights as they will always be submerged and it has basically no absorption percentage rate. Thank you for your very informative video - I would have had it much easier watching, learning and doing before making mine but I got it done anyway.
Lovely pots. It has taken me a long time to understand that it is the attention to the little details that makes the difference between a ho-hum pot and a good one. A smaller size of one of these would be good for fermenting sourdough starter. When I was a kid on the farm my mother would make sauerkraut in 5 gallon crocks, I guess that would be about 20 litres. She would put a weighted upside down dinner plate on top to keep the cabbage below the liquid. Because of the terrible smell it made and the scum that rose to the surface I never could make myself eat any. I prefer the cabbage raw and crunchy.
I have been planning on making some crocks like these for a while now! Thanks for the excellent tutorial! Love your glaze as well, looks almost like a japanese shino.
Så fine fermenteringspotter - god og instruktiv video. Jeg kan især godt lide de diskrete men ret virkningsfulde prægninger du har påført. Ret inspirerende👍🏽
Thank you for the beautiful video and your beautiful results. Your about to add handles, but didn't. Where would you add the handles? Would love to see a vid of your actually fermenting :) Thank again.
Thanks :-) I only added handles on a couple of them. I do not like it. So dropped it again. I have a video about how I use them for fermenting here: ua-cam.com/video/N3etZa0-WII/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for sharing your skills and advice with us. We also do many fermentation “projects” here in Japan, and as a beginner potter, I am motivated to try to do some of these. (By the way, could the green color in the ash glaze come from oak wood? I often see that with my oak ash firings.) Cheers!
I love your videos have learned so much from you. I’m a beginner Potter and I love them all. What type of clay that to use? Do you know what the name of it is? Thank you so much.
Thanks :-) In this video I talk more about the clay I use and which ones is good to start with: ua-cam.com/video/KrOtF9nc8yc/v-deo.htmlsi=tH5Oz11ODJtbFNwp
What do you think of forming the lidded groove separately as a ring piece and joining it to the main pot when it's leather hard? Would that make the throwing part easier, or just add extra time for no gain? That is, instead of a 2 piece of construction of pot and lid, it would be 3 piece: pot, ring and lid. Love your videos
Not sure what it is... maybe your passion and truth... maybe its your charming accent and laid-back yet engaging demeanor... heck 4 all i kno u use some sorta glaze conconcotion on your face before shooting to give it that lil extra shine.... But YOU GOT IT MAN! LUV ur video... and ive added learning atleast a lil abt pottery & make a few crocks or vases ... who knows i may even make a whole pottery barn!!!😂😂 Thank you good sir And not just for the video- but for truly creating more beauty and function in this oft ugle and dysfunctional world!❤❤✌✌🫶 btw- do u ever sell ur work or take comissions?
@deMibPottery nice! ill deff check ur stuff out- have u gotten to make any good fermented foods? also im curious what got u started on ur path 2 become a potter?
Hi, fabulous pottery and thanks for a great video. You mentioned liquid quartz to seal the unglazed area for the water seal. If using stoneware clay would that be necessary as it's vitrified? Im wondering would ancient pottery have been sealed?
Yes. As it is fired to full vitrification it is water proof. Also, to be extra safe I gave it a coat of Liquid Quartz. BUT in the next versions of the fermenting crocks I actually glazed them in the groove too. You can see more about how I did this here: ua-cam.com/video/ZXl2q8OcV-A/v-deo.html
I’ve been doing pottery for about a year and a half now (I’m self taught) and I’ve found I like hand building more than throwing but this video has really given me some inspiration to give throwing a try again. I’ve recently started making my own pickled veggies and I could use a crock! Thank you so much for showing your process, it really have a good idea on how to tackle this now.
Thanks a lot ❤️ I did not build it yet. I found out that the hard fire bricks I have is not ideal for a gass kiln. It is better to use insulating fire bricks (IFB). So I have got an old to loaddr that I, as a start, will rebuild for gas using a TDI design. The bricks I have will be used to build a wood fired kiln but as I am in a recidential area it is a little tricky as I also need to include a solution to trap the black smoke. I will off course video both prijects :-)
Nice crocks', just a quick tip thou: Even spraying outside it is good practice for your health to wear a mask. Those fine particles of glaze will be airborne all around you and even if you don't see it you will still be breathing in particles. Hate to see you become ill.
You are truly an inspiration! Thank you !! And yes I would like to see how you ferment you veggies !!!
Thanks :-)
I do it here: ua-cam.com/video/N3etZa0-WII/v-deo.html
wow!!! I love your fermenting pots!!! they are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing! I cant wait to see how you are fermenting!
Thanks 🙏 you can see how I use them here 63. Fermenting Vegetables in a Ceramic Fermenting Crock

These turned out wonderful. I really like the pots and the Folk Art White with that ash glaze on top is so nice. Thanks for all your videos.
Thanks so much 😊

Thanks, and yes - looks almost wood fired
Yes! Please do a fermenting video. I would love to see some recipes
OK - I will do something. Keep in mind I am not a fermenting expert :-)
They are beautiful crocks, remind me of my grandmother. Be well
Thank you so much :-)
I loved this video! I am going to try the fermenting pot as I love fermenting vegetables too! It was great to see you show yourself throwing the pot.
Thank you so much :-)
Thank you for a great video! (Edited to remove question that was answered on video 💜)
Thanks. Glad you found the answer :-)
Beautiful crocks! I hope to get to the level of making one of these someday. Thanks for the inspiration :)
Thanks :-) Just give it a go

Tusind tak :-)
Fantastic throwing and creating of Crocks for fermenting!!! Have you ever heard of Yellow Pearl Slip?
Thanks :-)
There are many ways to make slips and color them. I do not know of that variation
Wauv, hvor er de flotte! Tusind tak fordi du bruger tid og energi på at lave dine videoer - der er altid inspiration og gode tips at hente 🙏🙂
Tusind tak :-)

I hope so too! :-)
I’m going to make one. 😊
Good :-)

I absolutely love your fermentation crocks! Now you can ferment some 'Kapusta'😁
Thanks. And yes, I already do :-)
Thanks :-)
Yay. I was the first one to like❤️
Thanks ❤️
Wonderful design. Will you tell me what clay you used? It looks like Klamath Yellow.
Thank you!
Thanks. I sed 551 from G&S in Germany

I did that ones with a very large - almost 20 liter fermenting crock, but I generally find it easier and safer to do in one piece
Tjanks ❤️🙏
I like ur video n learn more.
Thanks ❤️🙏
nice work

Thank you so much 🙏❤️ I do sell my work - most from Instagram, my webshop and one gallery. I don’t do commisions :-)
Thanks :-)
Most often you would not fully vitrify your stoneware in a pitfire but even if you did in my experience it is not completely water proof.
Did the unglazed groove work with the water airlock? Does need a wax treatment to prevent the body of the lot absorbing the water?
I always make a flat disc with a hole in the middle which I cut in half or thirds to weigh the vegetables down and keep it submerged
Yes, I plan to do that too :-)

Wonderful tutorial! You are too modest saying you are not a great potter.
Last year you had lots of bricks for a kiln. Did you build it?
Thanks a lot ❤️
I did not build it yet. I found out that the hard fire bricks I have is not ideal for a gass kiln. It is better to use insulating fire bricks (IFB).

The walls must be fairly substantial to hold the weight of that massive gallery, right?
Not really. Its stoneware and very strong :-)
What is your recommendation for wall thinkness?
It depend on the clay and what you like. For these one I am IK with them being a bit thick
@@deMibPottery Thank you

Hehe 😄👍
Superflotte krukker og det ser så nemt ud, at det er lige før jeg tør at kaste mig ud i det.
Tak. Det skal du da helt bestemt bare gøre. I værste fald fik du øvet dig og så bliver det bedre næste gang :-)
wow :)
Thanks :-)
Nice crocks', just a quick tip thou: Even spraying outside it is good practice for your health to wear a mask. Those fine particles of glaze will be airborne all around you and even if you don't see it you will still be breathing in particles. Hate to see you become ill.
It works fine :-)
It's your pots. I don't think it will fuck it up. ❤
I do my best :-)
stain with oxide.
I use both stains and oxides. They each have different properties
