    I mean considering that for years now sonar has been able to detect ships on the other side of an island. Not being able to detect a submarine with sonar seems pretty on point for War gaming.

      Well technically, *haha love being that guy* sonar on board ships has a "search cone". What I mean by this is that if a submarine was lower than the search cone it wouldn't matter how close you where over top the bugger, nothing would come back on the display. I'm doing a right shit job of explaining this but funny enough Jingles plays a game on the channel that explains sub warfare. I do believe it is called Destroyer: The U-boat Hunter. Before such game I was actually a little puzzled as to why Herman the German and Hans in their U-boat could just stealth up and turn invisible like the middle child of a family. But no seriously for an arcade game this is some tomf*ckery.

      It can also do something it couldn‘t do IRL, and look through islands. Thats WG sense of balanse i suppose.

      Given this same hydro can spot a SHIP though a solid land mass, just makes it even more daming. Meanwhile the Sub hydro can find a sub at 3 times the distance of any surface vessel. Surface ship hydro only finds them at 2kms at ANY depth, Sub hydro will find them at 5 to 6 kms if i recall right but naturally you have to DIVE first.

      @@jaywerner8415 What's really missing from the game is Cruisers and Destroyers need active sonar in a cone out in front just like in WWII, but using it should give their position away to anyone within 10Km that has sonar.

      @@JohnnyThund3r Fun fact, that was simulated on DDs in one of the early iterations of subs. Once you got close enough, you would get a permanent bearing on the submarine.
      Cant say it really helped much other then to be like "hay guys theirs a submarine near me".

      The best sub surveillance range is like 10km with russian subs atm

      The design of the Gneisenhau and Scharnhorst (both basically copies of each other in real life) were supposed to have bigger guns refitted but there were issues due to the outbreak of WWII and they never got fitted. Yes, the plans were for basically smaller and much faster ships with less armor but the same guns as the Bismark class. With 6x15 inch guns, they would have been terrifying.

      @@plektosgaming No Sir, the main belt of the Scharnhorst class is thicker than Bismarck-class. And there were different opinions about the calibre of BB-guns. The chances to hit are not as high as in the game. To achieve a fatal hit is the main aspect. And with a higher rate of salvoes the probablity increases to hit one. German BBs could not be sunk by artillery, only British constructions could be sunk by artillery.

      @@hajoos.8360 It was well known at the time that the guns of that class were too small and a refit was planned. If WWII had started a few months later, it probably would have sailed with better guns. As it was, upgrading ship guns or even giving proper support to the navy was never a priority. They spent way to much on air power (including rockets) and too little on everything else early on. Meanwhile the navy knew the war was lost from day one simply due to the absurd size difference between their fleets. 2 great battleships hardly make a difference when the enemy can send piles of smaller stuff at you.

      @@plektosgaming Yes the replacement for Gneisenau with 15 inch guns was not really completed by a political will. Drachinfinel made a good docu on his channel about the quality of BB-guns. As bigger the size as better. But this is only on paper. If Kirishima was suprised by several broadsides with 16 inch guns, do you think really it would have made a difference to the doubled amount of 11 inch boradsides? I do not think so. At Jutland the Germans had more stamina, but smaller guns with faster reloading. And Scharnhorst class high velocity 11 inch guns could penetrate every allied BB, at least on paper.

    Yup. Navy vet myself. The idiotic submarine system in this arcade game was the straw that broke the camel's back for me and after many years of playing ... caused me to quit the game forever. It was fun while it lasted.

      Add me to the list. I served on an anti-sub frigate (Valdez, FF-1096) and played this game for 5 years...and like you, after one dumb-down after another after another after another (the original game was pretty damned good), the introduction of "subs" -- well, "high-speed underwater vehicles", but they sure ain't no WW2-era subs -- did it. Game uninstalled, account deleted.

    A couple of things re: the submarine:
    -Hydroacoustic search employs a hydrophone (i.e. is passive), and is not a SONAR system. This carries its own realism foibles that aren't represented in the Ship Game, but it's still an important distinction to make.
    -The submarine is most likely at 30 m or 60 m, reducing its detectability by hydro to 2 km. However, it can be detected by hydro if the ship is close enough.
    -Giving away your position by pinging that close is *begging* for depth charges right up your aft tube. That our hero today didn't drop both airstrikes on that ping source immediately is honestly a pretty big misplay.

    Thanks for posting my replay... and yes know i am not a good player XD.... to my defence... through much pain, i learned the the P. Hindrich has horible inaqurate guns at all but very close range, wich does the you get more consintant dmg with HE, un less you a soft cruiser ocf...

    Just a side note on the Asia server. I re-started playing the game 2 months ago. In that time I have played exactly 4 games without CV's. Last Friday night there were 51 CV's waiting at tier 10...
    A lot of players need to get a life and stop this madness.

    Hydro Acoustic search, specifically designed to detect submarines. But doesn't.
    Hydro is also not capable of seeing through islands, but does.
    Radar is also not capable of seeing through islands, but does.
    Wow! The realism! It's like they've really thought it through.

    WG Logic: A sub in hydro range is invisible...the much smaller torpedoes are visible to the hydro as soon as they leave the the sub's tubes. Because, of course, that's how hydro works.

    I've been playing this game on and off forever, but I'm horrible...and I'm OK with that. Recently downloaded it again and I'm just grinding at Tier III and IV to try getting better. But...I start every battle with the following chat message: "DO IT FOR REAR ADMIRAL JINGLES!!!!!"

    Actually Jingles, if the Submarine was at periscope depth, he would have been spotted by hydro since on the surface or at periscope depth, hydro spotting for Subs is the same as its max range. However, submerged subs can only be detected at 2km with hydro. So the U-69 was just spamming homing torps from underwater since that's the only way he can attack from that depth, not that T6 subs have regular torps in the first place.

      @Tired of War True, though the name is Hydroacoustic Search. And it does a muffled ping every few seconds, implying it IS an active search. Obviously, this is for gameplay purposes to remind you it's on, but it's pretty clear why people treat it as Sonar.

    Pretty sure the Nagato was attacking the other Heinrich because that was the one he had a firing angle on. To get that same firing angle on Smoky, he'd have to show completely flat broadside to the first Heinrich. Of course, he shouldn't have been trying to get all his guns on either of them, but even bow in, he'd still get more of his guns on the other.

      @@M.AZZAM8976 That's basically a simpler version of what I said. He wanted to fire all his turrets to get more damage, but had the minimal sense to fire at the first target he could get all mounts on, not continue turning to show even more side.

    So in regards to the sonar comments, the existence of the thermal layer roughly 100ft under the surface depending on conditions means that sonar reflections will get trapped within the top layer and not see much of anything underneath. Submarines will go between the layers while doing passive sonar scans to ensure nothing is hiding within any of the different layers.

    Actually Jingles. I think at Periscoep the Sonar does Detect Subs at Full Range.
    And at below Periscope its 2km Range.
    And Funny enough that is actually Accurate.
    In WW2 Sonar was Expected to only be able to Detect a Submerged Submarine about 2000 Meters away :)
    So while this is likely a complete Coincidence.
    WoWs is actually weirdly Realistic there xD

    The German battlecruiser line was a lot of fun to play through - looove those 360° rear turrets! 😎
    US standard battleships are simply too slow to escape when they're bottom tier and caught out like that Texas was.... about all you can do is hitch up your man pants and try to takes as many with you as you can.🙄

    I’m going to give a rundown on basics of sonar, to settle some discussion in here. I am a prior service US Navy sonar technician.
    Passive Sonar provides data on incoming sound, which usually gives only a bearing towards that sound, but with enough time and tracking, can give a range.
    Active Sonar sends out sound, which bounces off of a target, and returns. This gives both bearing and range to the target.
    So the only way a submarine could be completely undetected by sonar, would be to use environmental surroundings to hide. Or… shut down all sources of sound and hope the hunter is not using active sonar. Shutting down all sources of sound would include anything that taps, bangs, or vibrates. Even completely on battery, passive sonar detects rotating electric motors and propellers.

    Well jingles, RADAR has been seeing through islands since it was introduced. You and I being in naval services knows damn well how RADAR works and it's not magic.

    Jingles, you mentioned the Submarine at 8:20 being spotted because it surfaced. That's not quite right. At 8:16, the friendly U-69 used their 'Submarine Surveillance' and as if by magic, the enemy U-69 appeared.

    In all fairness they actually did get sonar correct, though it really does depend on the type of sonar used. Early ww2 era Sonar's were quite limited, very directional based, and were not very useful at high speeds and was very difficult at first to detect subs, especially if they were super close. It wasn't until nearly the end of the war that Sonar became very powerful in detecting in all directions, while traveling fast, etc. There's a huge technology difference in sonar from 1940 to 1945.

    As a NAVY veteran the idea sonar is not capable of finding submarine in the aoe is absolutely perplexing.
    WoW has to figure out a better structure for submarines that make the hunt on both ends much more realistic.

    From what I understand after playing submarines for a little bit, submarine launched torpedos may have a bit of a timer before they begin to home in on ships. Alternatively it could be a proximity thing to prevent an unavoidable shotgun . Either way, they’re kind of like British battlecruiser torpedos only in that delay, travel out to get clear of the ship and then turn to where you shot em. Yes I know they’re mechanically different but hope my point got across.

      Torps stop homing at a certain distance from the target so they (in theory) have time to Perform a Simple Maneuver. It's about 1k for BBs (shorter for DDs), IIRC.

    A great representation of Randoms. 60-70% of players can't get past "rookie potato" stage. The key is who has the most potatoes? And is your team fortunate to have 1-2 players that are good? If proportions are off, then the landslide wins occur. I've quit playing Randoms for this reason. It's too frustrating for me.

    think at 12:10 the nagato was shooting the other heinrich because he could get more gun to bare on him. If he went for our protagonist he'd have to expose a lot of broadside to the other guy. so unless he does something fancy like rotating front and back guns between them (which would probably be worse, splitting his damage) think he made the better choice.

    The homing torpedoes stop homing at about 1km (or more, depending on the ship targeted). This gives the ship a chance to dodge. Bow on targets are very hard to hit with torpedoes of any stripe.

    the worst part is, the yolo Kijkduin who died first (surprise surprise) ended up mid in the team score. This only cements his believe, this is the way to play the game. That mutsuki at the end on the bottom.... with only slightly above base 200xp for a participating win.....

      @@emberfist8347 the simple solution to that is: Either put submarines and DDs in their own exclusive (convoy) matches - which is already mostly there - or simply stop trying to shoehorn submarines into the game.

      @@emberfist8347 scouts, sure. That *is* how they were used in fleet fights, but they were hundreds of miles from their own fleet.
      Have them spawn, submerged, in the enemy spawn zone. Spot, or ambush, but either way, they're on their own, like a cat in a room full of rottweilers.
      THAT would put some skill in their play - screw up, and the spotting goes away, along with their boat. Get it right, spot for victory, and maybe bag a CV along the way.

    I would like to point out that the hydro special ability in World of Warships is - more likely than not - actually referring to the device known as a hydrophone, which is very much a different thing than sonar. Hydrophones are used to listen to soundwaves in the water, and detect ships (or in this case, submarines) by picking up on the noise of their propellers.
    As a navy veteran, Jingles should probaby have known this, so shame on you good sir, for spreading misinformation about what hydro is! 😁

    Sonar does detect subs but ship and sub speeds determine how accurate that detection is..

    Thanks it's not a simulator-game. It's an arcade game. It do have some bullet trajectory where most FPS don't.

    Torpedos in WoWs do not home in once they reach a certain distance from the target. It differs per type of ship. But if you know what the distance is you can use it to dodge the torps.

    Not sure, but I think that Ranger went AFK at about the 8 minute mark. i don't think i see any more of this planes on the map after that point.

    War Gaming has an arcade ship game. Cool. But sky-cancer and underwater-cancer not operating in any sense of the real world at all is very irritating. I played a game yesterday with a Cruiser, and each side had THREE underwater cancer-units, plus a carrier. Hilarity did not ensue. It was not technically a rage-quit, because I was just frustrated. With a sigh, I went to play something less broken.

    Battlecruisers are not defined by the size of their Guns. The Prinz Heinrch, had Imperial Germany survived, would have likely been commissioned as a Linienschiff.

    It's not actually a Sonar Consumable, its Hydroacoustic Search, meaning its a Hydrophone its sound detection

    Yes! World of Warships! Where sonar sees through land but cannot see through water! (and as far as what is going on in these battles goes, most players are now noobs, with less experience, as most of the veteran players have left, having become fed up with all of WGs crap. So expect to see more noob mistakes in your next "MANGLES WITH JANGLES" video!

    In first run actually... he did not saw sub because she was forced to surface but because this friendly U-69 used detection.. Im used to put light on for my friendly DDs this way when Im in sub 🙂
