@@shane3516 It's super out of key, playing a diminished fifth on the lowest available note, but its the fact that it happens during the instrumental break in an audible gap at just the right time and throws you off course for a second that makes it so brilliant. Thanks for all the insightful responses! when ever I play along to this track my instinct is to try and fix that run but you all have convinced me to enjoy the dissonance :)
I like how minimalist and balanced everything is. It starts with those driving, almost neo-tribal sounding drums, then the plodding but hooky (pun absolutely intended) bass line, and then the stark, bright guitar punctuates the mix and everything just feels so balanced, everything is churning and weaving and just works so well together. A testament to the pros of minimalism, a less-is-more approach. So damn good.
indeed. joy division's use of the high-tuned bass as the lead melody instrument is probably the most legendary thing in pop-structured music i know of.
Peter Hook is the Geezer Butler of punk. Whereas Butler made you feel like you're stuck in mud, Hook's bass playing gives that feeling of isolation and hopelessness that is the trademark of Joy Division.
Feels weird seeing a G2220 in walnut because I have the same bass in black. Love the cover love the fact that you show the tabs! I'm gonna spend some time getting this one down later.
Gretsch basses aren't super common in the mainstream music realms, more a studio tool suited generally for blues/country style tunes in their hollow-body formations. The particular model in this video is also used by Mike Kerr from Royal Blood, but the hollow-body models have been used by Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs), Duff McKagan (GnR) and Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick who plays a gigantic 12-string white falcon bass.

yeah, pretty much every Peter Hook bass line
the drums are kinda sick too, i really like every part of this songg

How can people not appreciate the bass? Even more when it comes to Hooky?
Nice job. So beautiful bass guitar dude. Regards from Argentina.
merci pour tout ce taf😀
Gotta love joy division tabs!!!!
As a finger style player, this song is forcing me to use a pick! This is a pick only bass line for sure (;
it just sends your thumb flying back and forth
really? I had opposite effect with this one. too much fast picking movement over strings id rather just let the fingers fly up to tempo
nice!
i have this exact bass.
love the natural growl.
i think i have a problem with the G2220 now...it feels weird not to listen royal blood songs coming out of it... lol
This song is why i bought a bass. Thank you.
Thank mate, I wanted to hear that junior jet bass in action with a joy division song, and it sounds great
Nice cover👍
Really dig the tone
God I love that bass. If you ever get sick of it, give me a ring, lol. Great cover by a great band and the great Peter Hook.
I think that's one of the best short scale bass guitars out there especially for the price, great video 👍.
Best bass riff ever😊
Looks like the Gibson EB3. I have a 66 EBO short scale, and put p bass D'Marizios behind the Humbucker with both pups on great tone love that bass
