Rare Exclusive look inside the Remains of Steeltown Records. "Steeltown" is best known for giving the Jackson 5 their start in the music biz. The Jackson 5's first record was released in early 1968, before Motown signed the group in 1969. Two Jackson 5 singles were recorded and produced by Gordon Keith in a South Chicago recording studio, "Big Boy"/"You Changed" and "We Don't Have To Be Over 21 (to Fall in Love)"/"Jam Session" "Big Boy", the first song sung by Michael Jackson was released on January 31, 1968 by Keith/Steeltown and became a local radio hit. In March of that same year, Keith signed a contract with Atlantic Records to manufacture and distribute the Steeltown "Big Boy"/"You Changed" record.

Wow! I didn't know anything about this. The Jackson's used to play at a hotel in Miller my mom managed. We (Michael and I) played Jack's under the floating stairs just behind the fountain on the 1st floor. His father was terrorfiying!

That’s an incredible story. Having a memory of playing any game with Michael Jackson as a child is one of the most unique and valuable stories anyone could tell.
I worked with a guy that took guitar lessons with Michael Jackson I actually got to see photos of them playing together as kids he lived a block over still does

The history of Steel Town records is a movie that has yet to be made. The untold story of the Jacksons true beginnings. If they did make such a movie they would need your video footage to remake the model of what the building looked like. What the inside looked like, the basement where the recordings happened. Michael's first hit "Big Boy". How many people even know about that song. I actually heard it on the radio when I was a kid in Gary. But I had no idea that Gary had this record company Steel Town Records. It's amazing how that past is being ignored.
I'm 57 now and I think I remember seeing the jacksons doing a small gig at the state fair grounds when they started to take off. They may of doing the opening act then.
I'm surprised that no one has taken any of those records you found.

Yeah the scene in the movie when they were singing "Kansas city" was supposed to be them on steel Town. Motown bought them out of that contract and then signed them to motown. Which is why Joe took his boys to CBS records because he thought it would be a similar process, but motown fought them on the move and in the settlement kept the rights to the name "Jackson 5". That's why after leaving motown they had to go by "the jacksons"

The place needs saving before it go's too far. One day when Gary is great again this will be so famous. The notice on the door made me feel so sad. I made a note just like this for my old Dad when he started to get Dementia. I had to stop the video there.
I'm their distant relative to the Jackson Family. Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and the rest of the family are my second cousin. Joseph Jackson and Kathrine Jackson are my first cousins.
Why is the video so blurry? Just about every video you shoot looks as if Gary is falling apart at the seams. Is there any development of Gary happening? The street you went down to get to the Michael Jackson home looked as if they were repairing the street, yet I see no equipment or people working. I have to repeat myself, does Gary have any new development going on?
No, Gary is basically left to rot at this point. Which is a shame, used to be a thriving community. Now it's in shambles with no real effort to save it.
