KINGDOM: A Hidden Zombie Gem

- A mostly incoherent/coherent review of the Netflix zombie-korean-drama, Kingdom, as it take the zombie genre into a whole new direction with dramatic twists, a rich look at Korean culture of the very late 1500s, and the characters that stay with you long after. This is my favorite zombie series to date, I hope my rambling conveys that lol.

Alright, fair enough bro take care.
How did you post that 5 hours ago?
I haven’t seen it, but it looks interesting enough to give a try. I love zombies ever since i got into L4D, so i think this will be nice. The dubbing is awkward, but i feel like it’s something i could work with if i watched it for long enough.
A FBÏ agent Or just agent I was just asking myself that
ever going to do a planet terror review?
Making the zombies only active during the day (I know it's revealed to be a temperature thing later on, but not the point), was fucking brilliant. It was the perfect way to make it so the zombies werent always a threat so that the series could put focus on other things while having the impending threat to build an external form of tension in the back of people's minds while it did other things that were important to the story.
Not only that, but it was a huge build up and a hell of a cliffhanger to leave it on. Now suddenly,.... they were never safe. That "safety" net of "it's almost day time!" was ripped out from under them in one quick tug. Shaping up for a bleaker future.
It was such a good twist though when it happened
True. In addition to how it is due to the temperatures they will have at least the summer and part of the spring and autumn to try to get rid of most of the bodies, while it is obviously hot.
it's a nice twist on zombies but not very consistent through the series as there are day scenes where it's so cold you can see the actors breaths and zombies sleep and night where it seems warm and zombies run around.
@@slevinchannel7589 did you mean to send this to me?
This show makes the walking dead look like an episode of the carebears. This show is amazing. I can't wait for season 3
True! Totally agreed with you there! This series is way above TWD. TWD shows repeated concepts over and over again. Too much human enemies, leading to the same exact conclusion, turf war. The zombies themselves were portrayed as nothing more than a joke
U also need to remember how he put to us and tell why is good :D
@@samuelanggono7190 it's because they are walkers. Of course they aren't a big deal lol. Kingdom is still dope tho
@ESparda A.K.A.悪魔の死神 umm. Because zombies?
@@samuelanggono7190 To be fair, Robert Kirkman said years ago that TWD isn't about the zombies. They're just an addition to the problems the people deal with during the apocalypse. The comic and show are about the (living) characters. Kind of like a soap opera taking place during the "end of the world", and has a lot of violence.
What I love about the Korean Zombie Media is that most of the characters aren’t idiots, zombies are a reasonable threat, has an actually interesting subplot, and there is genuine growth for our main characters that helps us care for them.
They also managed to keep the Zombies as the actual main threat in this series that everpresently looms over the human conflicts, which is something TWD completely failed at.
In other words, it does everything a Western zombie movie usually is unable to do. There's some exceptions of course but generally, they fail at all this in some way.
The difference is that Eastern zombie media typically uses these stories to show good and bad.
Western zombie media is extremely nihilistic and usually only focuses on the bad.
Off topic but, I see you like hololive as well
This hasn't aged well when you put Peninsula into consideration...
I love that the theme of HUNGER is rooted in every aspect of the show; hunger for power (Haewon Cho Clan), hunger for food (lowborn people), hunger for what’s right (prince Lee Chang), and the literal hunger of the undead. This show is effing awesome!!
don't forget... hunger for more episodes. We were the zombies all along...
@@onewinter9411there's no cure 😂
In Season 1, the whole aspect of the rulers and politicians using the zombie epidemic as a means to sway each other for power is so realistic. I've not seen more depraved story telling than this.
Kinda like now?
@@nunyabiznes33 you read between the lines. I like your style.
Yes. Like now.
Makes TWD look like a Disney film don't you think?
I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened in real life
@@thekiller7994 it did with covid lmao. But if an actual zombie apocalypse happened I guarantee there will be no elections, there will be martial law tho.
This is what the zombie genre needs, the modern day setting in zombies movies and tv shows is overused and other time periods should be used
The problem is that Zombies aren't a threat if you go back in time. Most people back then had melee weapons and knew how to use them. Add in how much more common armor was which contrary to what movies and TV tells you is actually effective and a suit of platemail would make you effectively invulnerable to zombies, actually all the armor types would make you extremely effective against zombies, simply put, zombies aren't a threat to any kingdom after the Greeks as a king would want to protect his peasants and would send knights in if zombies were thing, which would be invincible to zombies, and really good at killing them. The reason we can do modern zombies stories is because guns need to be aimed at the head and need ammo. Also armor isn't common anymore and the body armor we use nowadays isn't full body and is geared more for bullets. Back in the day a small cut could kill you as medicine was a joke so people who were about to fight put as much on as possible.
Zack Kerber it really depends on the type of zombies.
@@dr.calibrations7984 well, not exactly tho. In ancient europe, maybe. But in other countries, lots of the soldiers are only wearing light leather armor. And if the virus spreads among the armorless and starving commoners, it will be resulted just like in Kingdom series. Starving is common problem for commoners in ancient kingdoms. No matter where they are located. Even if the soldiers were fully armored, if the spreading among the commoners are too fast and they got sieged, they'll got exhausted fast. Or simply overruned. Soldiers claded in heavy and plated armor are not as nimble as we usually see in movies. The armor was extremely heavy and hot. Making their mobility questionable
Its interesting, but just doesn't really work till guns are implemented in mass. In late medieval people would have plate armour which pretty much will let you wade through zombies. Before that people will still have strong full body armour, just nowhere near as good as plate. And the world population is much, much smaller. That means much, much less zombies if a place gets overrun. While there are less people to fight, the lack of exponential growth for the zombies definitely hurts them more.
Mobility is key to surviving. If you read the Zombie Survival Guide by Max brooks, he goes into detail how ineffective platemail would be against a horde because it's cumbersome, noisy and the zombies would eventually tear through the metal or leather joints holding the suit together, effectively making you nothing more but canned food for them.
I'm pretty sure the bodyguard's wife became a servant in the palace so she could basically watch over her son. You see her in a group and turn and look at him after the ceremony thing he did.
didnt he say that his wife died giving birth
Yeah she is still alive. She is one of the servants for the king now
@@MrSparten177 No, Mu Yeong(mister bodyguard)'s wife is still very much alive and is now one of the servants of the new young king, who is actually her son.
Yep she is alive we see her as a servant at the end. He made a mistake while doing his video i guess...
@@MrSparten177 she's alive. she's one of the servants for her son now and you can see her at the end of season 2, look over at him after he walks past. He doesn't know that she's her mother though as he and other people are made to believe that the deadening and queen are his parents
I have to say that i enjoyed this series, and the original "voice acting" conveyed emotion really easily. Time just flew by while watching this, cant recommend this enough. Even if you do not like zombie series, this works well as a drama series. The zombies are enough there that they are a main point along with the "throne" fighting with nice plot twists.
In general this series was a different zombie series by the time period alone, and the zombies themselves were different enough to be new but familiar enough to feel like a general zombie.
Yeah i completely agree the series flew by for me
It was a good series and with the cliff hanger of the second season looking forward for season three
I love the scene when mu yeong asked lee chang about the beef cakes after he got the book
@@tylerghersinich576 I hate the feeling now and I hated the exact same thing a year ago with the cliffhanger at the end of the 1st season.
Mvm
Someone mentioned that red is the color of royalty. If you notice when Lee gave up his right for the throne, his commoner clothes was completely dyed red and Beom-Pal ends the scene by calling him "Your Highness". They mentioned it's a subtle hint that despite not having the throne, he is still king.
I think the scene with his distant royal uncle also hinted that royal blood or common blood- they all bleed the same. Despite knowing the baby is Mu-Yeong's child and not of royal blood, I think by the end of it, Lee decided to give the throne to the common people in a way. We saw him contemplating as he stared at the commoner's clothes before donning it as his "armor" when he did the coup. And then he gave the throne to a commoner's son.
The queen's fate reminded me of the saying, "You can be a king or street sweeper, but we all have to dance with The Grim Reaper."
I hated the queen.
I heard a version of that saying from Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
One year later but, *rhyme*

Underrated comment
There are only two seasons of Kingdom and yet I was more invested in the characters than the Walking Dead characters after six seasons , maybe if the walking dead had shorter seasons and less drawn out stories I may enjoyed it more
I don't think the shambling zombie is as scary compared to the running zombie. If the WD had the runners that might've made a bit of a difference.
Oh shit, I didn't realize there was a second season out already. Is it already on Netflix?
@@AJadedLizard yes
WD is a talk no jutsu series.
The problem with zombies is that they're an increasingly boring threat. The options you have to make them entertaining are very limited....why? Because they're just mindless corpses that show no emotion, and only have one desire:kill. You can't do plotlines like: "working with the zombies", or "zombies become good guys" or "zombies know how to file taxes" simply because....they can't, and any attempt at making that happen would just make your show/movie hella comedic and tacky. They're mindless corpses....how do you make mindless corpses entertaining for 11 seasons?
“But to make them behave as if the number is zero - that is true power.” That quote is... disturbingly relevant right now.

Fun historical fact: it was considered VERY taboo to harm the body of royalty, up to the point that even a light scratch can get you exiled or worse executed. One example is Queen Yun who scratched King Seongjong's face by accident, and ended up being exiled and later executed through poisoning.
I thought everyone has watched this by now and it was already decided to be the best zombie show.
@Eric Whitebread if you "hate" zombie movies/shows because of horror/blood etc. then yeah... this one is definitely at the highest end of that spectrum for gore and brutality. Although i can't recommend enough this show, as it's just that good, i still would say try it out, even if you might pass out midway lol.

One word to explain all aspect of this series: BEAUTIFUL! You can't be more correct. From the character development, philosophical and traditional value, symbolism, to beautiful shots of scenery, perfectly portraying the lives and condition of ancient Joseon era. The social structure and class was also superbly done right! The method of infection, origin, and spreading are explained quickly yet the more it was revealed, the more intriguing the series become. How humans trully act is also superbly shown. From the act of cowardice, heinous, disgusting, selfish, to selfless and virtuous deed of humanity. This show has it all. Trully what zombie series nowadays lacks!
I'm thinking that the best thing about the show is that the people all have pretty believable motivations for their actions. Even the evilest characters have a reason for their logic. The zombies are also important but not THE most important thing. The fact it's a horrifying natural thing that PEOPLE then use for their own designs and as weapons is also so refreshing.
@@lionofash7700 true. The true villain is the people. Yet it is also understandable if we see through their standpoint. Splendidly done. The zombies, even though it was not the main focus, but the writter still make them threatening, while also unfolding the human nature around them. Some are cowardice, some disgustingly selfish, some are righteous and selfless. All things unfold one by one beautifully, trully showing causal and effect

Beom Pal’s character in the almost-execution scene got me. The moment he goes against the grain, the look on his face as Lee Chang approaches, the way he falls to his knees and cries out like a boy to his father, it was too much 😭
The Tiger Hunter is my favorite character of the series. I love his 'no bullshit' attitude. I also adore Seo-bi--but I think I'd love anything that actress does since I first saw her in Sense8.
@Nathan Crowther that's probably why he willingly follows the crown prince everywhere and is helping everyone. The guilt gets to him and he sees that he has to do something. I think he already has a death flag
It's his redemption arc
@Nathan Crowther he did and he followed the help the prince for that. His arc is that even after learning it was not his fault, since the chow clan started all by infecting the king, he still stuck to helping others.

I hope Cho Beom-Pal ends up helping fight the new threat. Especially with the wrangler lady and her possible army. But I feel Mu-Yeong (or as I call him: Korean Boromir) is Beom-Pal's equal.
Yes! Korea is putting out the good stuff. :)
Quick note, Mu-yeong's wife did survive. We see her after the time skip as an attendant in the palace. She and a bunch of others are traveling with their heads down. Oof that dubbing tho- But it’s zombies, so count me as interested.
It has a sub
Subs are king my friend.
Subtitles are ALWAYS the correct way to go. I utterly hate listening to dubbed voices.
Subs >>> Dubs these are the facts, i cant change them
The dubbing for this wasn't bad at all. If you really thing it was Oof worthy then you need to sit down and watch foreign films that were dubbed in the 80s and 90s. By all means favor subs but this definitely wasn't a terrible dub all things fairly considered.
I didn't care for Black Summer or Reality Z, but love this and Train to Busan. It took a while to realize that Kingdom was an actual Zombie movie for me. I was so caught up in the scenery and intrigue that I was really thinking "what an awful plague" then my brain kicked in with "wft, they're zombies!" What a well done series and I can't wait for more.
TBH you must watch the show in Korean at first it's a bit difficult understanding names of people and places but it's a much better experience than botched dubbing and kudos to creators of the show they've done a splendid job . btw 3rd season is releasing this month so keep your *rooms warm and clean to chill* !

One of the best parts of Kingdom, I thought, was the first outbreak/attack on the city, which uses action and horror to subtly teach the viewer the rules and behavior of the series' zombies.

What i enjoyed about the discussion between My-yeoung and Lee Chang regarding him stealing his food and giving it to is wife is when Lee ChNg said, next time before you give her the food eat it first.
Implying that perhaps someone would try to poison him since Lee Chang already knew somehow that they were plotting against him.
A statement that truly emphasizes his empathetic side.Being concerned for the others well-being is something that we see him constantly trying to show in the series, but its small phrases such as these that truly show Lee's character motivations.
if i recall they werent pinning the treason on lee he was actually conspiring to take the throne but only because he knew that if the queen gave birth he would be ousted and killed since he wasnt a legitimate heir and a son of the royal family would have a higher claim than him, so while he was committing treason it was so that he could survive and continue to help the people, not because he was greedy and wanted power
Honestly, Kingdom was an amazing series and I was very impressed. I watched it with subs because I like watching the original. Lee Chang and Mu-yeoung are my favorite characters tbh.

@Erick Zamudio Can't you just praise others for one second and not sound self important all the time? Obviously there is 1-2 American zombie movies that are great but clearly even with the big budget and plenty of resources of all kinds, korean zombie movies have won every heart. Sounds like they have way more talented people over there for that genre. Doesn't mean Americans are not good at other genres: sci-fi, action and most popularly the superhero movies. Just give due credits where it should be given. That's it.

@@litzadey1482 I agree, they're just repeating a pattern with slight differences
@@greggaygayakutami1402 that's just a problem with zombie media in general. It's nigh impossible to keep zombies entertaining for a VERY long time (10 years) because they're mindless corpses. They have no other urge or desire than to simply feed on the living. You can't make them good, you can't make them change...without making it not seem tacky or comedic. Like...try making 11 seasons of Humans Vs Zombies. They're are only SO many ways to kill a zombie, or to make a zombie kill a human. Like how many times can you make "Daryl kills a zombie" or "random zombie comes out of nowhere and kills main character" interesting before it becomes stale? That's why TWD focuses more on humans, because you could do more with them....I know alot of people don't like Humans vs Humans, especially with a show that had zombies, but that was honestly the only thing they could've done to keep a portion of TWD watchers intrigued.
There making new season and its coming out on July 23 its called Kingdom Ashin of The North. :)
I only got to see a glimpse of this series from a clip on UA-cam, but one of the guys was a badass and padlocked himself to the gate after being bitten so that the others could flee. No subtitles but you could understand the emotions.
Either way, Korea is damn good at doing zombies. These ones are scary, too.
you can watch the show on Netflix and There making new season and its coming out on July 23 its called Kingdom Ashin of The North. :)
Apparently i missed this when it originally came out, but i watched both seasons and the movie over thanksgiving weekend and damn was it good. Seeing how this IP handles zombies and the themes of corruption and greed was such a breath of fresh air for my Walking Dead tired soul
one of the best tv shows to come out. this is how you tackle an overdone concept (zombies) and mend it with a very compelling plot and well-written characters. masterpiece
Everybody gangsta until zombies start naruto running
I loved the story, plot, the people, and the zombies. Everything was done awesome I can't wait for season three I really hope there is one.
As a note though, early on Lee Chang is questioning if he's actually just. He helps the people while yelling, "I'M NOT LIKE THEM! I'M DIFFERENT!" Was he really doing it because he was just or because he was so revolted by evil? He also DID in fact commit treason, he wasn't sure if his father was gone yet but began the scheme anyway.. The best part for him is when he goes to the Queen and tells her he's not there to depose her because she is from the clan he hates, or because she's a woman but because she is not capable of the responsibility of the throne and what it means to the people. Cho also has a few good points though he's evil. His statement that just reading books and being noble but DOING nothing ruined the country. There's also his actual belief in the tradition of monarchy by blood, he truly believes that they must be a proper king on the throne if the country is to function.
"Was he just or revolted by evil"
Is there any meaningful difference between the two? No much really. Only real difference is the hero an anti hero. Both despise evil but have different ways of disposing it.
Kingdom : Ashin of the North is coming this July 23rd as a Special Episode.
Binged Kingdom earlier this year.
Probably the best Zombie or "infected" series around.
There making new season and its coming out on July 23 its called Kingdom Ashin of The North. :)
I was literally just thinking about when you'll release a video about this Zombie Series hahaha... Nice vids as always you onemancheeseburgerapocalypse

@@Hi9-Knight It came out!!
The best Netflix series ever, perfect original and plot hole free
The platform is more popular but yeah good show's are really rare on Netflix also I like samurai swords

for me its money heist walking dead cobra kai then kingdom
It was a success here in Asia, which is great, hopefully this gets recognition in the West too!
When it came out, it was top 5 in Indian Netflix. Thanks to my brother for introducing me to the series.
Mu-yeong’s wife survived. She was saved. You see her looking longingly at the little king at the end.
It was indeed good and each episode is exhilirating to watch. There is an actual plot, and the intentions and goal of each character is clear.
Kudos to all of the people who worked on this series ♥
The characters genuinely make this series
Thought the opposite didn't care for the characters wanted most to die only 4 in the main group and one is a traitor
It's crazy because a child's brain doesn't fully develop until they are around 7 years old and the fact that the parasite made it's way to his brain at the end is awesome
Well we don’t know if it took effect. I doubt it because of his importance to the characters (the son of the bodyguard and being chosen by the true prince). It could be well experience a new form of reaction- a sudden turn in aggressiveness, or just falling ill- lending to a story of word spreading to the ears of the prince and the doctor turning into a race against time to stop it before it becomes irreversible.
I'd love to see something like this set in Europe in the same time period, although it would probably end up being butchered by whatever incompetent people actually make it. A shame, too- the fight scenes would be so fucking cool in that setting. Imagine Landsknechts and knights and shit fighting zombies. I wanna see a guy in full plate armor taking on loads of zombies that can't get him because he's too well-armored, or a guy with a Zweihander just _swingin_
That zweihänder guy is gonna get a 1000 kills
One of the reason why Kingdom so good that they don't have heavy armor like Knight, they only use light armor to make them have mobility also have armor to prevent the damage
Imagine how terrifying a fully armored zombie rushing towards you though
@@mac2696 arrow volley scenes will look epic and a cult group forcing people to be infected because people were religious back then
@@kingtorrhenstarkstark5311 sounds like what a Nurglite would do.
This is one of the few zombie movies/series I actually watched and enjoyed, as I'm not normally a "blood&guts gore" nor a "body horror" fan.
The "style" of this series is so so good. The story, the picture, the way it's filmed is just outstanding. How The main characters got infected and the fighting scenes are so so good too. The use of bow and arrows and the elite fighters who protect the crown prince was awesome. Lord Ahns men were so cool. They come together to protect the prince. I watched this so many times and the more you watch the more you concentrate on certain characters I didn't pay much attention too on my 1st watch. It's just so good. Season 3 let's go!! Because of covid, I think this caused the delay.
Thank god he finally did this, I'm waiting for season 3, season 2 was short
as both seasons are only 6 ep long, and the second continues right where the first stopped
In my head I class them both as one 12 episode season which a lot of anime seasons are (that or 24 ep)
You did good, even pointed key elements and provided depth analysis on significant details. I enjoyed watching the Kingdom series, it might not be very detailed as Game of thrones 1-4 seasons and even would look like very rushed pacing of story progress, yet it has own magic, that most modern movies doesnt have. Characters, their story, emotions and motives. I liked the acting, genuine and in times, touching, moments. When the kids accidently hit the king with the ball, how they were feared of their action and trough tears accepting the food and not being punished as they thought. Simple example to prove that, how Korean cinematography can create such moments which could melt the viewer heart and even make the viewer tear up "well at least for me" Also i could say that, this movie could be kinda educational towards Koreans. Its not like feudal period here but Korea still facing the struggle between higher and lower classes till this day.
Watched a few weeks ago. Definitely one of my favourite zombie shows, with such fantastic production value. It has opened me up to a ton of great Korean film and tv. Hopefully we get the 3rd season.
There making new season and its coming out on July 23 its called Kingdom Ashin of The North. :)

Honestly, I cant believe I never thought about zombies in different time periods. Brilliant idea.
Just wanted to say I just stumbled on this video and convinced my wife to get through the first few episodes ( she doesn't like dubbed shows) and we are absolutely hooked. This has one of the best stories I ever heard in the zombie genre... Thanks for the recommendation!

I mean a Zombie outbreak in the medieval time could be quiet cool. Tho it would be a sorta holding out in a stronghold style still. With Castles being used
This was probably a bit later then medieval times but either way it is very interesting
@Catnip - it's set in the joseon period so it's between the 14th century till 19th century, I can't tell you which year it's set in , it might be during the medieval times or past it.
@Catnip - since it is set three years after the Japanese invasion, it is set in 1601 joseon period
imagine a zombie in a knight armour
@@nome9752 That's probably the most dangerous zombie in the medieval time if you encounter one with only your self

It really is such a miracle how far we've come as a species to hae essentially eliminated the hint scarcity within the first world. A miracle so great that most who live in it take it for granted.
Dark times could be approaching if we lose perspective of how truly graced we are with the technology and efforts of those we never see. Of those we never thank.
You really found quite an interesting little zombie series.
I watched this series 3 times. Absolutely a masterpiece series. This voice over is not good. It's more better to hear it in Korean and with English sub subtitles. It takes away the feeling and authenticity without the Korean language. Watch it with the English subtitles instead of the dubbed voice over.
There making new season and its coming out on July 23 its called Kingdom Ashin of The North. :)

You can find it on netflix

i cannot stress how much i love this show. i literally have put this show on repeat for weeks and it never lost its magic. can't wait for season 3
Just finished watching this series as soon as I saw the comments on your video. Excellent show. One of my absolute favorite scenes in this gem of a series is the one where the two prisoners are tied together by a plank of wood to the head and one of them turns. Such a simple but fantastic scene. I felt sick just watching it. Also the tiger hunter character is just **chef's kiss**
I hate zombies ,but I feel the need to fear. I really want to stop being scared of them, but just can't. thanks for listening
I feel like i have an small heart attack cuz of zombies because my bro dressed up as a zombie for halloween(with make up) and scared me the fuck out of our house
That’s kinda why I don’t watch any zombie shows or movies. I was okay with this because it was in a different “time”/“world”.
Anyway just run to water and you’re safe
I hate zombies because of the concept of being eaten alive and seeing people just swarming to kill
Lol I used to be TERRIFIED of zombies when I was younger. I just got used to zombie media and the occasional zombie nightmares I get. Kinda get over it after watching too many people getting eaten alive.
@@havenprice Not necessarily depending on the type of zombies some can survive underwater and even cross large bodies of water
I really prefer subbed when it comes to foreign films. This series is really damn good.
Kingdom was amazing, but hearing the dub for the first time is just.... weird
Also, Kingdom's zombification process (Stage 1 and 2) are references to the first ever zombie movies ever made. The first stage isn't infectious (like in White Zombie) and the second stage is infectious which references the Night of the Living Dead.
I don't remember the episode number, but the episode where the zombies are let loose for the first time and cause mass havoc is probably some of the scariest zombie stuff I've seen in a while.
Hearing the child scream at their mother made me feel a bit nauseous for some reason-
I mean..that should be a normal reaction...
This was one of the best zombies series I have ever watched. All the actors on this show were great.
I've watched both seasons.....three times.

@@ishigami4622 Honey you have no idea how many times I've rewatched soooooo many different anime.
I do think it's ironic how the outbreak sorta started bc Yeong Sin wanted to feed the starving people. He wanted revenge for his village because the villagers were used to fight against the Japanese. Then in an ironic turn of events, he ended up turning other villagers into zombies because he was trying to do whatever it took to help the populace survive. I think that might be why Yeong Sin wasn't as angry towards Lord Ahn as he was with Cho.
