- Master Composter Cath Saunt has been running a HotBin from January 2020 and now in June 2020 it's time to empty it for the first time. Cath shows how the bin works and what the compost looks like after 6 months.
Fantastic sir!
Awesome update my friend thank you for sharing
Thank you for sharing your wonderful result! I’ve just filled my newly bought Hotbin for the first time.
We’ve recently moved into a garden with a much smaller garden, so I no longer have the space for large compost heaps, I’m therefore terribly excited at the prospect of getting nice, friable compost in a short few months from such a compact unit.
That's absolutely marvellous Thankyou very much for sharing X Maria
Hello Cath. I bought my first Hotbin just last year as well and I was delighted with the results when I first emptied mine. I'm due to empty it again now. Empty = remove bottom half of course, as you did also.
Lovely! Hello from London! ❤
I've got one of these and I would not recommend. As you can see on the video, it's all fine removing the front part of the compost, but the back is virtually innaccessible. It's need access doors both sides really. Also, with it being made from polystyrene, cats just love to scratch it.
Hi Cath, thankyou for making this blog it’s very helpful, once you empty the bottom half do you just push the top half down or do you add twigs etc to the bottom half first? Many thanks.
How long did you wait before emptying?
I have holiday homes in Winterton on sea. Do you think this would work for me as an option? We live on site?
Where the camera person ?
Hi Cath, I'm very impressed with your compost. I've done two lots so far in my hot bin and been disappointed with both times.
Could you give me any advice about what you put in and what you use for bulking agent. Many thanks.
Hi Johnny. I use a domestic Bosch garden shredder to chip prunings of shrubs, fruit bushes and small tree branches and add that. I also use a heavy duty paper shredder to shred cardboard (as long as it's not too thick) and add a couple of handfuls of each when I empty my 5 litre kitchen compost caddy
@@cathsaunt8313 thanks Cath !
@@cathsaunt8313 Hi. Could you let me know what specific paper/cardboard shredder you use, as I can't seem to find a shredder recommended for cardboard. Thanks
5 months!!! Ok as a way of getting rid of your waste but I would still need to purchase compost. You couldn’t rely on that amount twice a year.
Supposedly you can empty it every 3 months. Less if you don't need it to be quite as broken down. That's just what I've heard. 5 months clearly makes great compost, but it's a few months overkill I think.
The Mega one is bigger.
