We are in our 80s and are finding it more difficult to run as a hotbin. Can we just use it as a cold compost bin. PS love your videos?

Hi, yes of course you can use it as a cold compost bin. Just remember to not put any cooked food or raw meat / fish as this will attract vermin. Also it will not be hot enough to kill any seeds or perineal weeds. It will definitely still produce good compost just at a slower pace.

Hi Beanie, “ don’t you know it’s all about the base” I’m very sure you will sort it, I’m experimenting something with my hotbin, still in the testing stage at the moment, I’ll let you know my findings… best wishes to you and family

Yes Barry I missed that pun. It will be interesting to find out what you have been experimenting with. How are you finding the real HB compared to your homemade one?

I notice that ashy looking matter in my hotbin when I stir it up. Is that a good or bad sign?

Hi, If you watch a lot of my videos then you will see that I often have this which I refer to a BBQ ash. I believe it is a type of fungus (someone with more knowledge did say what it was in one of the comments I think it was in the 60 day compost and how to empty your HB better video ) but it is not bad. I always say it is a good sign that your HB is working well and although it can be very dry, generally I just mix it in with the wetter compost. For me it is normally in the very centre when I empty the HB. Hope this helps you out.
