It’s a cool combine I have wanted to feature since 2012. I know what you by a normal combine put pretty much I find the S680 is an extra extra common combine. I remember as the 8820 Turbo was a monster that was just too big. Most farms in my area had 6600s and 7720s. This S550 is bigger than an 8820 by 30 bu and 50 hp.
@@douglassellers7528 Titan 2 8820 has 220 hp vs the 275hp on this 550. I think the 8820 was a very good machine and its looks are legendary. But everything including the unload auger, hydrostatic power and cleaning area is 30 years better on the new machines.
@@tf7274 I'm guessing a S550 would cut circles around an 8820, though, wouldn't it? The 550 must have so much more threshing capacity. Especially when you consider today's yields: 8820s weren't made to handle 200-300 bushel corn, for example.
Triticale is pronounced "Trit-uh·KAY·lee." It is a hybrid of wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale). They tried to grow it in eastern Washington in the 1970s, but it never caught on with farmers.
They are kind of rare but I've seen a few here in NW Illinois. I recently found a a S550 with a Hillco conversion, first for me. I am seeing less of the replacement S650. Thanks for posting.
We grew some triticale in the late 70s in southwest Missouri. We only grew it for one season. It's much more prevalent in Poland, Germany and France. Incidentally, you pronounce the 'e' in the name. tri-tih-KAY-lee.
Cute little machine! I say little because today that is a small combine. I think the 8820 titan II and 9600 are the best looking one's ever made. 🙂 STS models and newer look cookie cutter to me.
Gotta be next to impossible to find parts for unless alot of them cross over to the bigger ones, im assuming they’re like the case ih 60-66vs the 80-88, can find tons of parts for the 80-88 but hard to get parts for the 60-66
I have not heard of any parts issues on these. The S550 is the same at the 9570 STS. They added a S cab to keep a class 5 machine in the line. It’s is also very similar to a 9560 STS. I will have a video out this fall on the S650 that replaced the S550 in 2014.
Organic crops are weedy. Especially in small grains. It’s hard to suppress the weeds. In row crops you can cultivate to fight the weeds in small grains you can not.
Does this farm not use grain carts to unload the combine with? Having to stop the harvest to unload into a truck when full sounds kind of inefficient compared to the luxury of being able to unload on the go with a grain cart
Yes I had heard and it’s disappointing to see production move from the U.S. that said John Deere has had a factory in Mexico for 70 years. The 5E series tractors are built in Indiana. The 6 series tractors are built in Germany. Deere is spread out around the globe.
Good to see a normal person's combine. Show more normal stuff. Luv it

It is really cool to see a combine that we would more likely use in our somewhat small and irregular fields. Sweet machine.
The S550 is an end of an era machine for Deere combine history. Surprisingly it is larger than an 8820.
@@bigtractorpowerI was wondering just that. How it compared to a 8820. That's a nice machine.

Really like this unit Jason...

Very cool video.....The big combines are impressive, but its so nice to take a look at a contemporary "everyman's" combine.
I have never heard of this crop before. But it's cool to see in S550 working out in the field I never knew John Deere had made one.
You definitely don't see much around my part of KY... It's like a cross between wheat and rye... Used in cereal I think... Not sure
@@kygreenskeeper8326 It looks like wheat but i am really confused about what it is
Thanks for putting all the HP and other stats in the description. Appreciated!
This one is still in excellent condition. This is one not seen very often. Glad you got it.
This is the first S550 I've seen in the field. 👍🏻👍🏻😀
We have the good old 9770 and a 9750, probably my 2 favorite combines ever

We run an S550 combine with a 30 foot grain table harvesting soybeans
That's a cool combine👍😁 it looks like an sts series😉👍
Very good observation. It is a 9570 STS with an S600 cab.
That’s a sweet setup! Just needs grain tank extensions now.
Excellent ❤❤❤
Very cool modern way of working, thank you and always follow you ❤❤
That is a very cool comment @Thuy_Dailylife ❤❤❤❤

That is cool! Kind of a cute machine.
Great video! Nice to see a John Deere S550
that combine is as nice as my 9400 combine I would like to have one .
The S550 is a great successor to the 9400 sized combine.
My friend he operates and all johndeere fleet here in ierland and the johndeere combine he has is a s 600i some beast of a harvester
Looks like they used some leftover parts from the 80 series deere on them, back panel for sure
The S550 is a 9570 STS with a S series cab.
Deere could make trillions if they put a x9 cab on a 9870STS!
You and your family have
A super💯weekend

What is Triticale used for besides cow food ?
It is a poplar silage crop. Farms do feed it is a grain supplement. This field is going to a brewer for malting.
Compared to aX9 1100 that’s a small lad but still gets the work done
Combine Harvesting
Nice looks like the average type of class combine here in North Carolina
What are all the tall dark organic weeds?
I'm guessing here since I'm from Scandinavia, but it looks like Common Lambsquarters
Matured and dead "Dock", at least thats what we call it.
Hello,this is organic crops?
Was there an s550 built on the s series chassis? This one is built on a 9570 chassis but i thought there was a newer one
The S550 is a 9570 STS with an S600 cab. In 2015 the S650 replaced the S550. Stay tuned for the S650 in corn this fall.
I never heard of a S550 combine. That’s a neat machine. Triticale is grown organic? I didn’t know that.
The S550 is a lesser known Deere combine but a cool one. This is an organic crop but it very common as a non organic silage crop for dairy farms.
I guess being it is an organic field explains all the weeds? Cockleburs?
That is correct. In organic corn and soybeans you can row crop cultivate. It organic small grains weed control is a challenge.
@@bigtractorpower I guess you would call that multi-grain.
Hi from Dexter🏠Missouri
Nice class 5 machine 👍👍. A dairy farmer I know grows triticale.
Triticale is a good grain feed supplement and very good for silage.
@@bigtractorpower yeah he green chops it for his cows.
It’s good for grazing out for cattle also
@@ShaneChaloupek 👍👍
Here in Brazil this model s550 is still manufactured
Very interesting. I did not know that. It was replaced here by the S650 in 2014 and retired in 2018 when the S700 series started.
@@bigtractorpower There are many small farms here, class 5 fits well.
My 8820 Titan 2 would run circles around that machine lol...kidding
Verrrrry nice machine in great condition. As a side note JD really copied IHC to the letter even down to the rotor widths of 24" and 30".
That's what they are known for copying/stealing from another manufacturer and claims that they came out with it first

Great video of a great combine, but look at the weeds in the crop! That field will be a big mess next year.

I like tracking down the less common machines to share their history.
Guys tell me is it easy to drive this machine?

Depends on if you have the money or not
As always.
Can we have a new video
Other then the cab it looks like a double of 9570 STS
That is exactly what it is. I just need to film a 9570STS to make the comparison. 😁
I guess you know John Deere is building a new plant in Mexico!
Yea thats too bad. So much for made in the usa huh?
Frankly I’m not surprised. What all will be made there?

That alcohol probably tastes like 💩 with all the weeds in it
Never seen Triticale harvested as a grain always seen it has hay bales or chopped
That's a small combine
Small for the S series era but larger in horse power and capacity than a John Deere 8820.
