so glad there’s a sequel. even though he did a lot of bad things, i feel for him. (so this book is the one Patrick McGoohan turned into a screenplay.) Looking forward to this reading - and by the same reader, Rufus Sewel, who is a brilliant reader/actor. ⚓️🌊 (8:30 p.m. 10/21/23 New York :)
Well... in fact it turns out that an American author called William Buchanan rewrote one of the Doctor Syn novels as 'Christopher Syn', and it was this that the Patrick McGoohan series was based on - but either way you'll find the character more recognisable now, with his scarecrow disguise and smuggling activities. Funny thing - about twenty years ago I knew a lady who knew the *actual*, current vicar of Romney Marsh and perhaps inevitably he was a big Doctor Syn fan..! One hopes he didn't take that too far though...
i can’t believe you wrote this 12 minutes ago. thank you much for letting me know. (i woke up at 2a.m. so you’re in Britain, right :) 🌷 i do hope he rewrote it with a better outcome. this one is just too sad for no reason! 🥀
@@feralbluee I fear that Russell Thorndike's original vision of the character was of a villain - in the very first novel it's a shocking revelation that the kindly vicar is in fact a former pirate and is running the local smuggling operations... it's just that the character was so popular Thorndike wrote of his earlier adventures, making him something closer to a romantic hero. But his vlllainous destiny is always there, waiting for him in the future... I suppose he draws a little on old highwayman legends like Dick Turpin - many is the tale of the highwayman as a romantic anti-hero with a doomed love affair etc. In some ways, though, Dr Syn is kind of like an early superhero in the same way as Zorro - the mild-mannered public persona, the dashing but dangerous secret identity...
I enjoyed this when it was first broadcast as much as anything from the BBC. It’s great to hear it all again.
parts 1 & 2 were a splendid delight, intriguing, suspenseful, thrilling, & romantic - thank you
Further Adventures coming very soon..!
Rufus Sewell's a great narrator! Thanks for the upload.
Thank you, love this great adventure ❤❤❤
