Queen Lucia (1984): 4. Purgatory and a Princess, by E.F. Benson
Support me on Ko-Fi: ko-fi.com/mysteriousmagpie
A certain kind of humorous story seems to fit in on this channel, many examples of which can be considered 'adventure stories' in the sense of being about the idle adventures of the idle English, whether they be small children or grown adults. I suppose Benson's stories of queen bees Mapp and Lucia are less like adventures and more like dynastic conflicts played out on the most petty of stages... But there comes a point where I suppose I must create a new playlist for 'Humour'... I must do that soon...

    Believe it or not, the BBC broadcast *two* radio dramatisations of The Wind in the Willows in 1994! The first was a six-part serial on the original Radio 5, in its final weeks on-air. It was adapted by John Scotney and starred Martin Jarvis, Timothy Bateson, Dinsdale Landen, Willie Rushton and George Baker. Broadcast on Sundays at 9.30am from 13.02.94 to 20.03.94. I recorded it and still have the cassettes - if I can digitise them you can have it for your channel. I prefer it to the Alan Bennett version that has eclipsed it. It was an hour longer, with a better cast and beautiful theme music. The Radio 5 version has never been repeated and appears to have been forgotten, save for a brief mention on Wikipedia.

    • @MysticalMagpie-wo5fn
      @MysticalMagpie-wo5fn День тому

      I confess, I was quite oblivious of this, despie having a fascination with the old R5 that extended to compiling its entire schedule into a single Excel sheet some time back. If you are ever able to digitise it that would be wonderful - not just because it would be a good inclusion for the channel but because it would be a chance to 'return it to the wild' so that it can reach people who will appreciate it! Thank you for the offer - just let me know if and when it ever becomes a possibility.

    I don't think we are told why a strong fit guy like Marlowe isn't fighting in the war. It's a rather obvious omission.

    • @MysticalMagpie-wo5fn
      @MysticalMagpie-wo5fn 3 дні тому

      Apparently Chandler deliberately avoided acknowledging the war in order to avoid having to address its impact and to maintain an escapist tone. The stories are therefore implied to be taking place in a post-war period - which might make us then wonder if Marlowe had served... but he's a stoic and I guess we might see his toughness as itself being a mark of his having served...

      I wish I could pretend to be knowledgeable when I tell you that the music is 'Danzas Españoles, Op. 37: V. Andaluza' by Enrique Granados, performed by Youra Guller... but I'm honour-bound to confess that I only just found this out myself. A very useful feature of UA-cam's copyright system is that it automatically detects music in a video, and (if possible) adds details to the description. So, if you click on 'more' and scroll to the bottom you'll not only see details of the music but also a link to a video where you can hear the whole piece without interruption...

      Oh yes, the legendary 13-cassette boxed set! You know, that was considered a gamble at the time - because who was going to spend that much on a load of spoken word cassettes? But it proved to be one of BBC Enterprises's best-sellers. I can remember borrowing it from a friend and spending a night copying it all tape-to-tape... So sorry to hear about your loss - I was myself bereaved about two years ago, and I know sometimes its important to have activities into which one can retreat...

      Damien Lewis - an actor worth looking into, especially for his performance as King Henry in 'Wolf Hall'. I've also got his reading of The Scarlet Pimpernel on the channel...

      It's pointless to leave a comment about it. Your problem is with UA-cam's advert policy. This is not a monetised channel, the adverts are there because there is licenced music in the video. You can complain to youtube about the number of adverts or you can google the various options to suppress them. But leaving a comment will change absolutely nothing.

      I'm afraid I'm at the mercy of YT when it comes to adverts, so I can't guarantee all of my videos will be likewise free (it depends on music copyright). However, if you liked this one I think there's a good chance you'd enjoy the radio adaptations of The Eagle Has Landed and The Eagle Has Flown which are on the channel - the second of these in particular was almost certainly an influence on 'Slipstream'...

    Little people use romanian words: frumos=beautiful, portocala=orange, ciudata=strange, ajută=help,barbatu=man/male,frică=fear...

      How interesting, thank you. I don't believe that's in the original novel so I guess the person adapting it must have wanted to have them speak a coherent language that would be more to most of the listeners in the UK.

    If you enjoyed this radio adaptation, then be sure to check out the entire novel, which can be found in audiobook form, as a ‘don’t miss’ read. I have been through the entire series 4 or five times and never tired of listening to or reading O’Brian‘s work.
