No modulation wheels or a bender for the synth presets.

I heard from Namm that they have repositioned the panel a bit ( giving them a slant and moving it a little away) so the fingers wouldn't bump into the panel. That's something we cannot overlook.

But the original Nord Grand has a panel lock which locks buttons only (the rotary controls still work so sounds can still be changed, but accidental changes are not possible).

I tried both Nord Grand 2 and Grandstage X at Namm. Being an owner of the NOrd Piano 5 and loving it, i am more inclined to choose the Grand 2 if I had to choose one--like you said, great keys, great piano sound library. Having 4 layers (2 for piano/ 2 for synth) is also super useful and I've been making use of em to create my own sound. Grand 2 is just playing catch up to the Piano 5 but with better Kawai keybed. But Grandstage X is also great, however, I am not sure if I will like their RH3 keybed long-term, because they are heavier than most keys. They haven't changed their RH3 in over a decade. Also since Namm was so noisy, I couldn't tell if I liked their piano sounds or not. They supplied headphones but they weren't noise-cancelling. I know the Grandstage X has a bigger memory than Nord (small 2gb) and have more piano/patch samples loaded in. They also only have 3 layers vs 4 on the Nord. I think I would really need to try the Grandstage X again in person to really know if I like it. I did try the Rhythm section of the keyboard, I really dig that it has a rhythm section cus it gives me a chance to practice with percussion/drums in the background. Nord Grand/Piano 5 has no rhythm section. :(
Oh prob one thing people overlook is the Nord Piano 5/Grand 2 has the split X fade feature. This is so awesome. Basically the split point you choose has a cross dissolve feature to the next few keys to the right of it. That way your sound doesn't have harsh cut off right on the split point. I love this a lot.

Can I ask, why is Grand 2 playing catch up to the Piano 5?

I went down the same path of reasoning as you and looking at different boards as replacement to my Yamaha S90ES and also considered Korg's Grandstage X but prefer Nord for its user interface, action and sound. S90 ES is a great sounding board but after this many years I felt that technologies advanced and matured enough to make a quantum leap. Finally decided to order Grand 2 this morning and got a call back from Sweetwater saying that they are starting shipping by the end of this week.

Congrats! I hope you enjoy your new board% these days so many boards sound great we have the luxury of really finding what we like and how it fits our playing styles/workflow.

I have a Nord Stage 3 compact. And I'm starting to see Nord will eventually not necessarily phase out but will need to bring more to the table. All they are doing is adding and removing features to new products. Each product uses the same sounds so there is really no major difference in the boards.

    • @ZacBarnesMusic

Correct. Stage 3 and the original Nord grand are really good boards and had the last big meaningful updates. Will be interesting to see how things evolve over the next decade with the company.

Thx for your video. Depends on how it plays and how the keybed works with the sound. I’m curious to see (feel) how the keybed has been improved.

    Very informative.
Definitely cleared some questions i had. I’ve owned Roland, Yamaha and Casio boards but was never satisfied with their sounds. Yamaha was close in sound that I’m looking for that lives in my head, until I’ve heard Nord boards but their way out of my budget range.

Check reverb for a used nord. Stage 2ex shares the same piano sounds as the stage 3 and should be the same price of a yamaha for sure. Oh the never ending chase for "that sound!" haha

I have the Nord Grand #1. It's nice. The action is very good and the voicing is almost perfect for a digital. The Grand 2 would be very desireable. I understand it has some excellent upgrades. I might get one.

My two cents: The YC88 and Nord have the best feel and piano sounds. RD-88 is best for sound design and a pretty good price. Grandstage X looks interesting, but the RH3 keybed is really old compared to everyone else. Not sure why Korg has not updated their key action. You're completely correct on the fact that you should spend more at this price range to get what you want, because most people will hold on to a high end instrument like this for decades. I've had my Korg Triton for over 15 years and would never sell it. If I ever sell my Nord Grand, it will probably be to replace it with a Grand 3.

    • @ZacBarnesMusic
      @ZacBarnesMusic  10 місяців тому +1

Thanks for watching. The rh3 action hasn’t been a problem so if it’s not broke, I’m too concerned. I’m not sure how possible it is to “update” keybed action legitimately. Yamaha has been making pianos for a loooong time and they haven’t made new action yet either. I guess as long as it feels good. Nord has always had the weakest keybeds (until the last 2-3 years imho)

Sounds like you really want a Nord man… you have probably figured out you can’t buy a grandstage X yet… I was seriously thinking about getting stage 4 buy then the stage 5 will come out and I will feel bad. You are right if you have the money get what you want …oh what you have a stage 3….you are cracking me up dude. You don’t need a new piece of hardware you need software and a midi controller. For whatever reason the Nords just sound better. Especially the strings. The difference in strings is insane but strings is just a side thing for piano players. Vc1 midi by Kawai is the real buy it and not have worry about again thing. There is your next video..edit I went back and watched a couple minutes of your videos….i have never seen you before…..bottom line you are a great piano player and you definitely deserve a Nord and you have a very nice one…have a great day.

I’m familiar, but this was about the grand 2, it wasn’t meant to be an in depth competitor analysis. I just wanted to use some other boards as price examples. And Korg and Yamaha and Roland are just very popular so everyone would know who they are. ☺️

Always wonderful videos and It's a pleasure both hearing you talk and play.
So Nord Grand 2 is coming out and they've not released a new piano sample? The Nord Piano library needs one; a piano sound that sounds 9FT concert grand, and that sounds well tuned. I think Nord replicates acoustic pianos better than everybody else (except of course for some VSTs), but their marketing style is getting worse. Few useful extras in all their new products and boy, there are a thousand you can make, because the gap between a digital keyboard and a fully loaded computer is huge, and in today's technology bringing a computer face to an electronic device is the peak. I mean we've done the same with phones... and even with watches, while Nord is happy to bring 500mb of extra space for synth samples if I understood it well haha.
Trying to figure out if it's more stupid to change your iPhone every year, or upgrade to this in stead. :p
