    I saw this movie at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood when it was first released to a packed house and it seems to me everybody loved it. The thing is that everybody who went to see this movie in the first few weeks probably saw the lengthier previews shown in the theaters and knew what kind of movie they were going to see. Other viewers probably assumed because it was a Spielberg movie it was going to have a more familiar plot and couldn't keep up with the fast tempo and slapstick comedy. To me it's still a comedy gem and a must see for any John Belushi fan.

    Geniuse scene. Spielberg weaves shots of a traditional musical number with the pursuit and menace. The dancing gets honored and focused for several seconds of pure joy. Great editing.

    I ❤ this movie. I loved all the uniforms except the USN NCO! It may be historically accurate but looks childish and cartoonish next to the others.

    The later half of the film is loosely (LOOSELY) based on an actual event/evening: The Battle of Los Angeles, Feb. 1942...it was a real thing.
    (BTW, I absolutely love the women of that era.🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸🌹)

    Great movie ,but it was not well received by the public or the critics. Spielberg had his own say with the gags, which were inspired by cartoons, as they were one of his childhood influences. As the movie was intended for an adult audience the gags were to childish and so not well received. But it still is funny and very entertaining.

      Many of the people associated with this film were also reported consuming tons of drugs at the time, including Spielberg, who’s always tap danced around the issue somewhat.

      I was about 5 years old when this was on KTXL 40 uncut. I LOVE this movie. The physical stunt work with the USO and the riots are AMAZING. Guys hit with chairs, flying through plate glass, the zootsuits fall out of the back of the pickup when it’s rear ended, all the guys ducking when dan akroyd fires the 30 cal at the marquee. Through a child’s eyes it’s just funny, as an adult I just see pain.😁

    The band must have listen to lots of Big Band music. But I believe more of Benny Goodman. For the tunes. Are the same. I had dance one time like that. But not like the main couple. What a great not we all had. Then it all ended. Sad. I can't dance any more.

    • @McLarenMercedes

      @@michaelj.beglinjr.2804 And here we see somebody who never matured beyond the age of 14. Funny how your kind *never* says anything when critics praise the films you like. It's called being an infantile cretin.
      And listen clown, this movie *flopped* and it's because the *audience* didn't like it. But a coward such as yourself can't really grasp that so like all clowns you blame the critics.
      Critics hated the Twilight movies. Does that mean they're good?
      Critics loved The Dark Knight and Avengers films. Does that mean they're bad?
      Critics had Twilight but many millions of stupid little girls went to see it worldwide so it was a *commercial success* .
      Critics loved The Shawshank Redemption back in 1994 but *nobody* went to see it because it didn't have some famous actors in it or some "exciting adventure". Today it's the #1 film on Imdb.
      What does all this tell us.
      You're a master of something called *confirmation bias* - usually found in kids, fanatics and *idiots*
      So what are you?

    • @McLarenMercedes
      @McLarenMercedes 2 роки тому

      To OP.
      Hate to shatter your myopic view of the world, but it was the *audience* who hated this movie. Cowards like yourself are too stupid to admit that they sometimes have a *taste* which differs from the general public. There is nothing wrong with that. What IS wrong is to fail to understand this and blame a small group of people. The critics.
      Where have we seen this kind of cowardly behavior before?
      Uh, witch burnings?
      You see people like yourself couldn't really understand why there were bad harvest when crops died and disease which killed off the livestock. So there must be somebody responsible, right? Probably those unmarried women living with their cats in a cabin. Surely she must be a witch who caused all this suffering for us...
      You're no different.
      Free people choose their own taste and interests.
      Cowards and petty-minded people always want to find a scapegoat for whatever makes them differ from their myopic "norm". This also explains all bigotry in history.
      If you love this movie. Good for you. It's *your* taste.
      The movie going audience back in 1979 didn't like it because they expected another "Jaws" or "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Spielberg never attempted comedy again because he was really out of his depth doing it. Nothing wrong with that either, he made several quality films in other genres.
      But if you seriously believe that a small group of critics somehow magically made most people in 1979 hate this movie you're either in denial or stupid.
      Why am I so brash and crude with you? Because reason alone is futile with your kind.
      "I don't care what the critics said." I find that hard to believe, since you mentioned them after all. So next time just write "Great movie, I loved it." The moment you include a scapegoat you inadvertently place yourself as an overgrown infant. "My daddy is much stronger than yours, and I don't care what you say."

    • @JohnWesleyDowney
      @JohnWesleyDowney 7 років тому +3

      Well, if you really want to get specific and picky and literal, the girl is an actress being filmed for a fictional, comedic representation of events that never actually occured, so the panty hose are a rather small part of the conceit. Since the whole movie was filmed between November 1, 1978 and spring 1979, panty hose HAD been invented by that time and since you can't wear a garment that does not yet exist, your statement is factually inaccurate. Just like the film.
