I started going to college after high school because my parents expected me to, but after a month I said, “I already know all this stuff and I can’t get a job.
I need to learn how to actually DO SOMETHING, like fix cars or wire houses,” so I dropped out and became a nuclear technician in the Navy.
Unexpectedly, the Navy LIED to me, and instead of being a Nuke Electronic Technician, I was made a Nuke Machintst Mate, which meant I was forced to stand watch in a 110 degree Hell Hole Oven, in Engine Room Upper Level, and do all the crappy jobs the Electronic Technicians didn’t want to do.
So I suffered for six years and bought an electronic technician correspondence course and taught myself electronics and when I got out I worked as an electronic technician.
You have to master life or it will master you.
My son paid off his college debt and we are glad he did the right thing.

My son graduated high school in May. He immediately opened his own car detailing business. He started going to companies that have fleets of cars/trucks and asked if he could show them his work. He did such a thorough job that they signed a contract with him. Then of course the referrals started and he got even more contracts. Hes booked 5 days a week and doing great. I use to get so sad seeing all his friends going off to college and wishing he would too, but now, I couldn't be more proud of him. College isn't for everyone, and if I don't have to pay for my own son's tuition, I'm certainly not paying for anyone else's.
The family Tyrus talked about was my family. We had no fancy vacations growing up or new cars for our 16th birthdays. My mom wore my grandmothers hand me downs instead of buying clothes for herself. My dad either brought a sandwich from home for lunch, or had a 25 cent cup of soup. Every spare dime my parents had went into savings for college or retirement. My father said he would pay for my school as long as I went. I got a couple small scholarships, but otherwise, my parents paid for my schooling. So do my parents get reimbursed?? My cousin has student debt from going to USC film school cause his dad didn’t save for his school, and they went on vacations & got expensive presents & nice clothes. Should he really be further rewarded by having his student loans paid off?? He works in Hollywood as a working screenwriter. He is more than capable of paying off his own loans.

Dear Greg and team.....I might be in the UK but I have to thank you all for talking sense in this senseless world, it gives me hope to go on for another day.
I went to college and got my degree without ever borrowing any money. I was in the Marines in the late 60's and when I left in 1971 I had money saved up. I worked and used the GI Bill to pay for college. I worked 40 hours a week when I could depending on the difficulty of my classes and schedule. When I graduated with my BS, I already had a job since I had been working while attending college. When I got married, I found out my wife had student loans and we paid them off. Our two sons left college debt free since we worked and saved to be able to afford the cost. We didn't buy fancy vehicles or buy a gigantic house making the most of our income. I should have my tax dollars paying off other's student loans. They borrowed it and they need to pay it back.

Years ago, the company I worked for decided they would ONLY hire people with at least a four year degree. The first year the Division I was in hired 8 new employees with degrees. By the end of the first summer there were 2 left. The rest had quit because they thought they deserved a job with an air conditioned office with a nice desk and chair. Needless to say the " policy" was changed.

I thought that a person was morally obligated to pay off a loan when it was made to them.
The conversation is about paying back loans when it should be about why it costs so much money. We need doctors and lawyers, we need people going to school and getting these jobs, and if they have to get loans to pay for it. They should pay it off. I couldn’t afford college so I went into the military. Yes, poor white families do exist. Went to full time college in the evenings 5-10pm classes after my military daily work, and graduated with honors. MBA while in uniform - all done in my spare time while others my age were partying. Sacrificed everything. 20 years later: best decision ever. Now I’m running laps around them.

This student loan forgiveness is NOT fair to the responsible parents that saved for 18 years to send their kids to college, not fair to the college students that worked and put themselves through school without huge loans, and definitely not fair to the millions of people throughout the years that wanted to go but simply could not afford it so they have no college degree. If they had known the loans would all be forgiven, maybe they would've went as well. Bingo. I sacrificed and hustled for three straight years to pay off all my debt (including $50,000 in student loans) and then, almost immediately, started saving for my daughter's college. She won't have to deal with this because we're being smart and she'll be properly educated about finances before she gets to that point.

I came to America as a penniless immigrant, worked two jobs dishwashing at first, saved every penny and invested to the bone, got married and raised 4 children who are now professionals without a single loan or dole out from anyone.
I served in the military out of high school because I had no clue what I wanted to do. I then used my GI Bill for a CIS degree and it was the best decision I made as a kid.

Banks haven't done student loans for years. Student loans have been federalized for quite some time. The guarantee of payment is why the cost of higher education has skyrocketed over recent years.
They're also very low interest.

In my last year of college, about 1994, a teacher complained about a younger student getting angry because her grade wasn’t as high as she thought it should be. The teacher told her she would have gotten a higher grade if she had followed the directions in the syllabus. The teacher let our class know how much she appreciated the more mature, age wise, students

Every time a Democrat Karen cries about her student debt, we should push to cancel the government student loan program. We should push to cancel the Department of Education. We should push to cancel subsidies to Leftist BIG Education. We should push to cancel elected officials who cannot manage their own personal finances without taxing the working poor for a bailout.
I took the entrance exam to a technical college. I did not qualify for any grants they offered, mostly for unwed mothers getting government help each month. So they gave me a sheet of different loans I could apply for. One was a federal grant, in which a man in a black suit came to my house saying, we will loan you forty thousand dollars, you can use that money to live on campus, but books, and pay your tuitions. You won't have to worry about paying any of it back, until 6 months after you get your degree and start working. I asked about interest on the loan, I nearly fell out, it started time you took out the loan, and continued until sent had been paid in full. That forty thousand would have turned into nearly one hundred fifty thousand dollars. I had to say no! There's a better way to pay forty thousand, go to work and pay it, even if it takes you longer to get your degree, at least you won't have that debt holding you back. At that time, in the late seventies, you could buy a nice house for fifty thousand dollars.

How does a person who can afford a vehicle worth over 17K and a House over 17K not afford a debt of 17K. Sell the House Sell the Car. I owe 21K and now it's over 27K with fines 👀

I came to this country as a refugee. My parents didn't have money to pay for my college tuitions. I graduated optometry school with $150k student loans in 1993. Took me 15 years to pay off. Never once I questioned why or who should pay for my loans. I just have appreciation for the opportunities this country gave me. What has happened lately saddened me deeply 😕 😪

I went to college and had to get student loans. I only took out the amount that I needed and I paid it back as quick as I could after I graduated and got a real job. I would be royally pissed off if they don't make people pay back their student loans.

With as much as she's getting paid from being in office she could have paid her debt off a long time ago. But she's holding on to that debt to use it as a talking point
