- Circa 40 years ago, around 1972. This is for all you "older" kamaaina who toiled in the cannery during summer vacation and came home smelling like pineapple. Remember the pineapple burns and your bango number? Those were the days.
The pineapple industry was one of the most important industries in Hawaii.
It provided summer jobs for thousands of high school kids through the years, myself included. This is Part 2 of "Checkers and Pogo ON THE GO" featuring the pineapple industry in Hawaii. We tour the cannery operation in this video. Personally, I used to work the Ginanca machine and carried trays of canned fruit from the packing tables.
Wow, thanks for the memories. Not quite sure how I got here, but I remember seeing this when I was 5 watching "Checkers and Pogo". Man I miss being a kid in Hawaii.
I had good memories working here,,anyone remember walking past the locker rooms over the bridge then looking down at hundreds of "packers on the conveyor belt stuffing the cans with pineapple...I was lucky to get to walk around the all the departments and vast warehouses..worked at the hula cooler, and Bin Repair
Mahalo Kawika for posting this. My first job out of college was as a project engineer at the Iwilei cannery. Now every time I return to Oahu and drive into town in Nimitz, I miss the smell of the the bran dryers. Smelled like Pineapple Upside Down Cake =D
