I think the ret problem is made up of four issues:
1. The idea of the class
2. Rextroy doing insane stuff with Paladin
3. Savix doing insane PvP stuff with ret
4. Blizzard wants ret to be the in-game version of Mcconnell
I mean his real problem is he's not using fucking hand of hindrance.
That's the problem with streamers, all clout and no brain.
I haven't mained paladin since cata, but I guarentee I still know the class better than him, just gearing the alt every xpac.

@@Mugthraka If you haven't gotten back into the game, its that its very weird to have everything on a GCD. Do you know honor talents - the talents that only come into effect in PvP or when War Mode is turned on (this is for World and can be used to level)? Unholy has Raise Abomination. Raise Abomination replaces Army of the Dead and its very, very important in PvP as it has a constant disease aura and its auto attacks applies Festering Wounds. Festering Wounds, in case you didn't know, is what DK's diseases has been kind of replaced with. If you only played Death Knights in say, Wrath of the Lich King, do you remember Death Knights having Frost Fever, Blood Plague and Unholy Blight? Now, Unholy has a single disease now called Virulent Plague (from a spell called Outbreak). Currently in Battle for Azeroth (and some bits in Shadowlands from the short time I could experience - but don't think too much on this), is that you need to use many cooldowns that are on a GCD on an engagement and in PvP, it can feel very, very awkward.
For example if you want to slow a target in arena and start a hard engage, it would be something like Chains of Ice > Raise Abomination > Dark Transformation (transforms your ghoul into a stronger version) > Festering Strike (Applies Festering Wounds) > Unholy Frenzy (haste and your auto attacks apply Wounds) > Apocalypse (transforms 4 Wounds into ghoul summons). All of these are on the GCD and its very unwieldy. As a Unholy DK, myself, I echo Will Prox's sentiment.

To be fair, pallies are a hybrid class. They should never be able to do as much damage as a pure dps class like mages or rogues. Their strength is their versatility, to be able to tank and heal. McConnell wants it all.

@@iamtimorama by your logic elemental or ench shamans, moonkins, ferals, shadow priests, should be as bad as rets. If Blizzard decided to make hybrid dps classes as good as pure dps classes, then rets should have at least something to deal with ranged dps, otherwise it's like in Savix's video, you are just dying from dots, at least in BC and Wotlk you had dispel.

I'm worried it's because Blizzard is not confident that Shadowlands can or will compete with the other major November releases, so are desperately trying to make a move by releasing a month earlier than those releases.
Doesn't matter if Shadowlands is good or not (to them), it will *exist* before the games others are actually excited to play, and will be motivated to drop the money on the expansion and at least one sub.

Burning Crusade. I was slowly making my way through the top of the black temple, where there was literally an army of enemies training on the roof. A ret pally flies in, pulls every single enemy, and brutally murders all of them.

Up until 2014 i could do some crazy shit on a Ret. Soloed the 10 and 25 man, Lich King Raid in 2012-2013, only got thrown off the edge 1 time in 25 man before i beat the Lich King. I also remember soloing the Cata 10 man also @ level 90, no small thing to accomplish.
I thought that was prot with their blessing of sanct and holy shield that could do that. Didnt know ret could do that too. Yikes.

Yeah.... Barely.... And they need to work for it harder then anyone else. Im a warlock main, i shouldn't be advocating that every class around me but rogue and mage looks like dog sht in comparison for 3-4 expansions in a row. Ret pallys and enhancement shamens have felt like they have been on life support just barely getting anything but nerfs since mid/end of MOP.
@Jonathan Soko i quit WoW 5-6 years ago but in the time i mained a Ret Pally from 2005-2014, i always thought the class was OP specially in BGs or Arena i never had many issues and was successful at least 80% of the time.

Thank you so much for this. I have been saying this for pretty much two years now to my friends and on the EU forums. We have low mobility, terrible sustained damage, no viable gap closer, no magical defensive(bubble can be dispelled by priests and it has long CD) dispellable active snare(with a 30 sec CD), and a stun that can be dispelled. But my friends and some of the most active Ret posters on the forums are like no, Rets are fine. Also, thanks a lot, Mcconnell for shedding some light onto this matter and you are right the pony sucks, I hate that horse. Rets definitely need some serious attention, maybe even a rework.

So true, they are almost always OP or at least top tier. Ive played druid mainly feral since TBC and rerolled rogue for the start of BFA as it was just too good the damage and cc is insane, they could literally 1 shot with a ranged stun.

...but tbh so pretty much any melee. It also depends on how mechanical you want your class to be. How mobile you want your class to be. How hybrid (healer or spells) you want your class to be. How much cc you want your class to have. If you want to be reactive or cerebral with your play style. Something like a warrior/DH/ret pally is highly reactive, you just kind of move in the moment. Something like a sub rogue/feral druid/ww monk more cerebral where you are planning a future situation in the moment such as trying to pull trinket with a stun to open them up to sitting a full blind during a "go", or bashing to set up a full cyclone. I honestly think any class is playable just some will suite an individual's playstyle more than others. Also, some will feel more rewarding with less effort.

Yeah I rerolled from Ret to Druid in MoP🪣 and then to DH in Legion. They were good but I definitely had a lot more fun on Ret back when it was as it was tuned in Cataclysm. Pvp and Pve wise. Especially for solo-type players like myself who in BG’s wouldn’t really stick with any specific teammates. But when put in a group it would be invaluable too because you could cast your immense array of situational buffs on desperate allies too! Turning the tides on many a battle, and saving many an ass on bosses.

Uther already passed the mantle to rextroy as the paladin that will lead the cause.

Most class were super nice on mop, I wish I knew I was in a good exp at the time.
Wod and mop both had issues. Don't get me wrong. But the Legion rework ruined almost all that was built upon since Cata-Wod.

Doing raids as a RET in WOD was a blast honnestly. After that I just left for FF and I'm having way more fun now.
I was a ret paladin main when cataclysm dropped and we went from 2 classes hard countering us to most classes hard countering us. It was so bad it made me quit wow.
Same. I rerolled twice for the duration of the next 3 expansions before quitting and it was never as fun as Ret in Cata. Rogue were our best match for arena for stun locks and we could still compete with equally geared & skilled DK’s in DragonSoul & FL. Arms Warriors still dominated and imo that’s never changed

Don't know why they deleted reforging/ glyphs old class design instead of making them even better.
Now we get all those GREAT systems and NEW EXCITING coolest stuff ever - and we can BETA test it for an whole expansion before they say "sorry it didn't work but hey here is the new expansion with cool new systems - you'll love them!".. and no, not all is activisions fault, thats blizzards fault. 54:49 The same happened to glacial spike frost mages in PvP. You had one strength and that was one shotting people with glacial spike. Other players didn't care that the frost mages had to stack mastery gear and pop their trinket and other consumables/cooldowns, cast 10 seconds worth of frostbolts beforehand and cast the most predictable spell in the game with a 3 SECOND CAST TIME. Instead of line of sighting the spell, interrupting or using a defensive. They just thought "Hey I got one shot by this mage. Better complain on the forums."
I think glacial spike got a 70% nerf since the start of the expansion. It's literally unplayable in PvP.
What do you mean dude you don't like hard casting 2 second casts for 7k dmg while a ret pally can kill you in 4 GCDs once they're on you? Problem with Ret is that they're complete cancers to deal with in 2s because they can bubble CC and just kill someone through their defensives if they don't have an immunity without them being able to do anything about it.
Up their damage, buff them but make it so their immunity either makes it so they do 50% of their dmg, like it did in Cata or just make it so that they can't attack during their immunity, like most classes with one can't.
and snares, and poly and blink CS and iceblock and frozen orb memes. They might not be the best option because they are competing with fire mages, but frost is fine utility wise
Kühn Andreas ok That’s just not true. I’ve taken my frost mage into bgs when glacial spike and I consistently do 200-250k non crits on some and 300k crits on others, it’s rarely less. It’s just easily countered

Also me: Sprints for 70% movement speed, Grapples across the map, Has a permanent 15% movement speed increase.

I'm a Prot Pally main. Prot has less GCDs than Ret. You'd have an easier time taking Prot into PvP over Ret, and Prot is designed around PvE over PvP. Shows just how bad Ret is right now.

Shield of Vengeance could also be a bit like the ability from Imperius in heroes of the storm - his ultimate is a shield just like that, but he can reactivate it to direct the damage in a line in front of him ( a bit like the essence with a holy lazor)

The second half of this video is just the paladin forums for the last 15 years if they made it into an audiobook.
Give retri a "holy UFC cage" where the target cannot move outside, unless the retri says so ( similar to Camille in League of Legends). Also, people should be able to play their characters, which is impossible with the amount of roots, stuns, fears etc... so DRs should be more unified than they currently are .
That would be pretty cool, just a bright thin opaque gold octagon 15ft in diameter line on the floor, which enemies can’t run across for 15seconds. That’d be a suuuper cool pvp ability to compensate for speed buff loss.
Showing that ret sucks compared to mages, and warlocks, and then switching to a rogue to show that you can 1 v 2 only speaks about how op mages, rogues and warlocks have always been in pvp, since the very beginning of the game.

I for one would like the Ret Support Group to become a regular thing.
Ret Paladin has had the same issue for several expansions. No synergies between attacks. Literally been faceroll since wrath, press every attack off cool down and click spender. And in pvp, every buff you throw just gets eaten by locks, stolen by mage, or purged.

Ever since Tigole and Furor came back to the wow team, ret has been ultra trash again, like in vanilla. Actually, it's worse than vanilla, because at least vanilla ret had good heals, and could dispel magic off themselves and others.

This is what happens when blizzard just ignore class design and focus on nothing but borrowed power.

Well, one humble question: Paladin will receive Uthers Guard as Legendary Effect back. It is weaker, yes, but still gives -1s Cooldown on Blessing of Freedom for every point of Holy Power spent. If you PvP-Spec into it, you get +30% Speed and the buff cant be removed. So we talk about 25s CD - 8s Durations means 17s Cooldown, which must be skipped with the consumption of holy power. Is that doable? Also, if you conduit into it, Blessing of Freedom will give another +15% Speed for 8s after it runs off?

16:58 I do not think it's worse than before. The problem is, that players notice it way easier due to lack of PvP-Progression in the game (scaling). Back in WoltK for example, you could have played a class that was considered really bad in high rated PvP, but you were still owning and having fun in Battlegrounds or in WorldPvP because you had full PvP-gear. You could win because of your time investment/gear instead of skill. That's how it should be in an RPG.
Nowadays you have scaling. You're pretty much on the same gear level as other players. So only your skill matters for winning. But when you keep losing even though you're playing very good, it's probably because your class is weaker than others. That's when you get frustrated as a player.
Scaling has to go.
I dont agree that its the scaling. Its the class design and dumbing down with higher gcds and less off gcd abilities make the skill gap less apparent. This is why pvp sucks rn and blizzard will never fix that its over
Scaling is not the issue here. Class design is. If you are "good" only because you are carried by better gear then you are not really good and that's a sign of a bad game. Gear should definitely give you advantage but not detrimental advantage. And saying how "thats how it should be in an RPG" when most of the RPGs are not even multiplayer games is very odd.

In every RPG you can make up for a lack of skill through progressing your character, by investing alot of time. That time comes in the form of overleveling your character or farming better gear. That's why I specifically said RPG and not just MMORPG.
I never said the better geared player should always win or come out ahead. Skill should matter, but the progression of your character should play a major part too. And that progression doesn't exist in PvP at the moment. (And also not in leveling, but that's another topic)
@@KaSousek58 Dude you need to deserve that gear, that's the point of that, it wasn't that easy to get those shoulders or weapon from arena. So that gear is your skill, and as I remember in wotlk, it doesn't consume to much time to play arena and get that gear,so you can casually farm it. But now if they have stronger class they will win...
@@aleksadmitrovic6347 The gear isn't player skill just because you need to be skilled to get it. I am not sure i understand what you are trying to say. Gear can be testimony of player skill, but in no way, shape or form is it same thing as player skill
