  • After doing Donna Summer's version of MacArthur Park, I thought of bringing something new to the original hit by Richard Harris. I thought a new mix with more punch and presence might work. Richard Harris never made a video for the song. However, I also remembered this video clip that I saw as a young kid on TV that was a lip-synced recreation by a young man named Steve Marcus. This clip was featured on the Rick Shaw Show in Miami back in the late 60s. The show featured local young adults lip-syncing to the current popular hits. This one made quite an impression on me and it still does. I hope you enjoy this new mix and video!

Love the quality of your mix with more punch, presence and passion! Evokes my memory of walking in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles in 1969 and "thinking of you and wondering why."

Timing: I was 15, it was 1979, and in High School, I had just joined the orchestra as a percussionist (as I was a pianist and did not know from anything brass) and we looked at the sheets for MacArthur Park. I had just bought the 12" Disco Single of Donna's Suite. I did not have the album yet, as I was just starting what was to become a lifetime obsession of parting with my disposable income at various record stores all over my part of the world... I brought the single to school on a very cold winter's day and educated all my cohorts as to what a Casablanca Disco Single was, as no one had ever seen a 12" single before with its distinct jacket design. I remember everyone being fascinated by Side 2 which was "static grooves" and the label said: Special One-sided Record - Play Other Side". Anyway, I played it full blast on the Music Room sound system at lunch hour and everyone was mesmerized by how this song could sound so "current", as opposed to the Harris version that we all vaguely were aware of, being teens in that era that listened to radio...
Some years later, I persuaded the DJ at the local huge gay disco I frequented in Toronto to play the Suite - those of us on the dancefloor who made it all the way through as well as those standing at the sides all applauded when it ended, as the DJ let it end cold without mixing another song into it... this was 1989 or '90/91... it was refreshing after years of 80's HiNRG and Italodisco.
A magic song that has had profound impact in my life.

Very good mix and video. Definitely more punch when it goes into the fast instrumental part. Back in the day when a 4 minute song on AM radio was considered very long, this one climbed the charts just as it is in this video. Well done.

Once again spectacular job !!!!!! I have always loved Jim Webb's work, he is a master song writer. He is a musical hero to me. The info you have on the vision used for this is fascinating. He lip syncs perfectly! When I saw this post I thought for a moment you may be using the only 'live' footage (to my knowledge) of Harris performing MP on stage (here: ua-cam.com/video/-GhK4X-hMKA/v-deo.html) This however was the right choice. Thanks for doing the work on one of my favorite songs of all time :)

Brilliant! I've always considered an early incarnation of Prog music. If you listen to the cover version by the Neal Morse Band , I think you will agree.

What was this originally shot on? Film or video?

    • @themotownboy1

I think it was originally on film from 1968. The source I used is not the best, but it is the only source I know of for this clip.
