  • How do we create mathematical formulations for "if an absorption unit is selected or a membrane is selected, then do not use a cryogenic separation unit"?
Or, "if a flash vessel is selected, then use a distillation column afterwards, not membrane".
This tutorial is to guide how we systematically create mathematical formulations for such type of problems without requiring some experiences in the integer formulation itself.
The materials are taken from these two great books, which are authored by the same Prof. Grossmann
Systematic Methods of Chemical Process Designs (www.amazon.com...)
Advanced Optimization for Process Systems Engineering (www.cambridge....)
In the video, the formulation for the either-or constraint is correct.
The formulation is to select either f1 or f2 is applicable.
So, if constraint f1 is selected, then y1 = 1, and the same goes to f2.
The exclusive OR constraint, y1 + y2 = 1, will force either of the constraint is applicable.
    When y1 = 1, then f1 is applicable
While f2 will be relaxed to a big number of M2
