Random fact about dnd: the canon reason you have to "memorize" / ready a limited amount of spells each day is because the previous goddess of magic let everyone cast wathever they could imagine while the goddess used her power to maintain equilibrium (using magic like that causes rifts and chaos, so the goddess was working on that). All went wrong when a human managed to cast a 12 lvl spell, becoming a god and basically killing that goddess, ending magic and bringing chaos. Later, the goddess reincarnated (different- same goddess) and to prevent that happening again decided to cap magic to lvl 9, limiting the kind of creatures that could use it, and also limiting the amount of magic that each magic user could use daily (by needing to ready a couple of spells each morning and no more)
Damn, I just love Overlord lore. 😍Kugane Maruyama, author of Overlord covered every nook and cranny. We learn that humans of the new world can't necessarily use wild magic well unlike the tier magic. But we learn later exactly why that is without ever directly addressing it. Spoilers below It is later mentioned that wild magic uses HP rather than MP as a source for casting. It is no surprise that humans of the new world can't use wild magic because their low level HP is not sufficient for powerful wild magic spells. Where as creatures with copious amount of HP like Dragon emperors can utilize greater level spells of wild magic. Albeit doing it at expense of huge human and demi human life sacrifices rather than their own HP. Funny thing is however, this is never outright mentioned as the reason why humans can't user wild magic. But we are supposed to connect the dots as the reader.
If you are looking for some more primary source Overlord content, there are some Overlord drama CDs and blue-ray bonus content that were released. Here's a playlist that includes a lot of them if you want to learn more: ua-cam.com/play/PLzjCeGMXKsSwN2UdB-XX0OmttFqbitctD.html While its not clear how much the actual stories are canon, the lore is often accurate. And not necessarily the most exciting to react to, but if you don't have time to read the LN or manga these can help fill in gaps. There are also various omake like the 4 seasons of Ple Ple Pleiades shorts, which I believe others have mentioned before.
Overlord's magic system is really just DnD magic applied to a mana system. Most spells in it are literally taken from DnD 3.5e and modified to use mana instead of skill slots.
The reason why you have to memorise spells in DnD is because magic is ridiculously strong. Think about it like this: your party is in a bad spot and may get wiped out,, then a wizard casts one spell and suddenly the odds are COMPLETELY overturned in your party's favor. That's how strong magic is in DnD even at levels 1-10. Not only that, but unlike with skills or stats there pretty much no limit to what can be achieved with magic because at the very core magic is the ability to rewrite reality at will. That's why all classes that use magic have to deal with some restrictions, otherwise casters would just break everything, as well as make all non-casters nearly useless. Remember, it doesn't matter how high your sneak attack is if a caster can just turn you into a baby turtle and fry you with a firebolt.
I loved DnD but my party switched to Pathfinder 2e partly (Only one of many, MANY reasons ) for the reason of limited spells. In Pathfinder you have use of basic cantrips that you can cast all day long and they all scale with level so they stay relevant.
Since this is a Lore reaction, you really need to be full of energy otherwise it will be boring to watch, so in my opinion take your time and don`t push yourself.

Well that was how YGGDRASIL players abilities saw it as. The reason the HP seemed to go down is because Wild Magic uses souls as fuel for their magic.

You'll be well prepped by the time we can get to the movie.
