Hurricane Beryl power outages: 1M+ in Houston area in the dark as heat index reaches 105

- CenterPoint Energy, which services the area, says it has now restored power to roughly 1 million people affected by the storm. However, the lack of power in the heat is causing problems for those still not restored.

The amount of people downplaying this and trying to say people need to be more patient are blind and deaf to reality.
If our infrastructure is this fragile, what will a more dangerous and powerful storm do? Cripple the entire state for a month? 2 months?
I would like to see those defending these companies turn off their 20k generators and suffer with the rest of us.
What’s blind and deaf to reality is no longer having the ability to prepare for disaster on a personal level as a species.
There’s no excuse, people are too domestic. Life once had no AC and no refrigerators. Humans need to step up their personal survival planning. Why the f*** would you ever opt to fully rely on a power grid? It’s stupid.
A couple of days without power isn't an emergency. Done way more than that and I'm still around
@@guam6869doesn’t change the fact that it’s rough for Houstonians bro. Their humidity is insane on top of 95+ temperatures and no ac, refrigerator, etc for days. It’s gonna suck for anyone. Yes you dealt with a hypothetical “worse”situation but there’s always someone that’s worse off than you. You sound like one of those guys that brag about how little sleep you get.
@@HomeByTheSeas Fair enough, now tell that to the folks who end up dyin' due to that heat. Walk on over to the families who have kin no longer alive and let 'em know how stupid they were. Idiot.
Thanks Lord for your salvation
Thanks Lord for bible study class
Improve infrastructure, should have done that after the 2021 winter blackout
Innocent people died unnecessarily 😢
We can't. All our money is going to the military industrial complex
Our infrastructure is better than most states. California can't even keep the lights on during normal weather. They have the most ppl effected by power outages for 7 years straight. Texas supplies the national power grid with over 10% of its power, and has the most bit coin mining facilities in the US and only loses power during extreme weather events when tree limbs covered in ice are falling on everything, or trees flying around during hurricanes and tornados.
Shareholders can do without dividends. Way better than customers can do without power.
Abbott assured us that the Maintenance was done but it was not! So here we go again it is HOUSTON who mostly vote Democratic so they must pay the price!
My neighbor literally just passed out from the heat, and still no news as to when centerpoint will have our power back on
Oh my gosh.
@iampatricemeeks9512 Yeah it looked bad, but thankfully the paramedics told us It wasn't too serious she was just dehydrated
How do you have internet? Curious?
@MK-ut2ee No internet just our mobile network
That state run electric system looking fine with out federal overnight 😅
That is not enough. This is the second time that centerpoint has dropped the ball so you need to be whole accountable what they did.
You should leave Houston man if it will be hit by a Category 5 then the city is completely doomed
Salute to Oklahoma for coming we watch each other's back..stay safe Houston
What race? I still haven’t seen anyone from center point! No crews, no one has cleared anything on our block except the neighbors. This is hell!
racing to hire contractors to head south. usually power company's put us on call before the storm and let us set up staging points before it hits. center point did not.
Our apartment is surrounded by with power but us 😢…we stayed without power a few weeks ago for 5days and we still have to face this all over again 🫠
@@CoverTreeRanch ugh!
@@Sami-wu1ng last time we didn’t have power for 5 1/2 days! This time we still haven’t had it and there are still trees, debris from when center point came to do “repairs” in May! This is wild.
Prayers from Atlanta, not sure if that helps. Human incompetence.
I don’t know why Texas can’t never get together after a storm. It used to be like that here in Florida, but we started burying the power lines and now it’s much faster to get back to normal. What’s wrong with Texas?
Unbelievable for only a CAT 1. God help them if a CAT 3 or above hits.
Stay tuned! You haven’t even begun to experience the hard times that are coming.
@@johnhix484 Hurricane Ike and Harvey will strike again! Don't forget the Galveston Hurricane of 1900! I'm a Texan, and I'm really surprised that all this damage came from a CAT 1.
Dallas was in the dark for weeks and there wasn't even a hurricane to blame....
Centerpoint dropped the ball for the freeze and now the Hurricane. Y’all have to do better.
If they don’t nothing you cant really do unfortunately unless you can just move.
No power in 77546, running on a backup generator dying in this heat/ Centerpoint needs to get their stuff together.
@@thetntteam Acclimate
You are kidding, right? An aging grid system in an overpopulated area with over 10X electrical demand during emergencies and the electric company should snap their fingers to instantly restore power to a system that took years to build?
@@frozentundra7446 They need to weatherize the lines.
It’s been 3 days no power yet all our fridge items gone out 🥵 on the other hand tomorrow is 105 heat wave 🤯 in Houston 😭😭
I think they lie about the temperature readings, not that it isn't hot for you in Texas ar this time. Do you know that that they tell folks closer to the equator that the usual daily temperatures - for no rain or excessive cloud cover - are '32' and '33' degrees C? Ha ha ha. They use the real effect of humidity to explain away the BS forecasts whenever we question the low readings for the heat we experience - the lies are astounding. They would have us believe that it could be 40 deg Celsius in England during summer but rarely ever 40 deg C in the caribbean (for eg) without them saying humidity is the only reason why it feels hotter than they report,
I have a workmate whose husband works for a power company up here in N-TX. Last week, he was in OK dealing with power outages - then he got the call over the weekend to go to Houston. So he drove 8 hours to your city to help get things up and going. Why am I telling you this? Because his wife got a video from him today of people cussing at him, throwing rocks and bottles at his crew members and having a hissy fit because someone brought these linemen some cold cut sandwiches. Really? Why?
I understand the frustration and the heat, I spent two of the worst years of my life in Houston. I also understand that living on the coast means you better be ready to take care of yourself for a week or so while hard working linemen struggle to get your AC back on.
These men sleep in their trucks because the hotels nearby are filled to capacity. They don't have the option of searching out a cooling station for some respite from the heat. And they don't see their families for weeks on end. So you want to throw things at these men, maybe make one of them lose their balance and fall into one of those power lines. Would that get your lights on faster?
Shame, shame, shame on these folks who are so wrapped up in themselves that they can't find some way to help the others around them, especially the crews that are working 16 hours per day, trying to help Houston. BIG, BIG black eye for some of Houston!!!
I have my doubts this actually happened, mostly bc if you bother the lineman, it’s going to take longer for your power to come on, and seeing a truck in your area should bring a sense of relief. I’m just having a bit of a hard time with the idea that anyone can be THAT stupid
Yes, I agree. I make myself fully available to all these linemen. Keep my van nice and cool and invite the boys in for a well deserved break. I can fit four at a time!
Don’t let a couple or privileged mfs represent all of us. A lot of us are good people down here.
Completely agree with you.

i guess all of the california people who migrated south are losing their minds right now😂😂😂
best regards from new orleans
Maybe maybe not. If they are smart, which im sure they are, they would have gotten powerwalls and solar or a generator system
@@Neppy1414 I guarantee Californians cannot stand even typical Houston weather let alone the current 95F + humidity boosted by the hurricane. Californians will complain about anything above 85F with no humidity or below 60.
It’s really more of a migration east than south
I moved from FL and I have seen my share of hurricane and storms. Biggest difference is that Florida buries majority of the power lines, why doesn't TX do that too.
An article from April 2024 says Florida is nearing 50% of lines underground.
Florida also has their trucks stationed ready to go when the hurricanes hit.
The idiots running our local Houston government and Texas state government constantly deflect and make excuses to avoid burying the cables.
Actually, no they don't. You can drive up and down Pensacola Beach and see overhead lines right beside the water...idiotic.
$, dont wanna spend profits on investing in logical sense
Sorry to see everyone suffering from your poor power grid. Texas government had money from the federal government to upgrade your power grid but decided to give everyone a tax break. You all need to decide what is important to you and hold your government responsible.
Why not offer up some hotel and motel rooms in other cities that were not impacted for these folks who are suffering, until their cities can get everything under control? If the goverment can do it for migrants can't they do it for Texans?
They're all inhabited by the illegals that keep crossing the border.

Thank you to our brothers and sisters in Oklahoma for helping. We love you, ya'll are awesome!
I’ve only seen (5) trucks since Monday and they were eating lunch. There is a large number of linemen trucks sitting at a staging area. Not a solution in this intense dangerous heat wave. No excuses since we’ve dealt with rainstorms, tropical storms and high winds, hurricane, flooding
And tornadoes. This is unbelievable the owners of Centerpoint (in Delaware) dropped the ball.

Kind of silly don't ya think?

Just another repeat of history.
You’d think after the derecho or the 2021 ice storm calls to improve the states power grid would get something moving
They're too busy fighting about the border and trying to keep biden out of office , who has time for important things like upgrading the power grid? Lol

Local officials should make it a law to have generators at all essential businesses before a hurricane strikes. Gas stations and food stores without power is ridiculous-- everything stops without those life-lines.

😂 the republican way, electric run state systems and with no federal overnight.
We mostly relied on solar farmers and wind farms but hurricane season destroys them & get the money for repairs but the power lines are cheaply built or just reused it sucks
Underground electric lines should be in place where hurricanes cone every year. Its safer that way.
Monopolies rule our country.
Why are we alway talking about Houston and Galveston what happened to Freeport Clute and Lake Jackson
Well what do you expect if you keep electing the leaders again and again?
What about the little towns that are southeast of Houston. Those people are suffering. They need assistance now. With food, water, ice, etc. Dickenson is still out of electric too. It got it hard.
Alvin & league city are pretty much out of regular petrol & diesel for almost 30 miles around the area for some fuel
Baytown was hell for an entire week
Ted Cruz offered his thoughts and prayers to everybody before jumping on a plane to go on vacation.
Reliant and Centerpoint didn't prepare again for this hurricane and that's why we're in this situation they're terrible companies they should be run out of town
The GOP of Texas is a joke, if this was a CAT 5 hurricane there would be many deaths. I am a union Electrician of 35 yrs. The problem is with the gross lack of coordination of the utility companies which lack oversight. Quick fix, all gas stations should be required to have emergency generators, the utility companies should replace all poles every 10 -15 years, like a tree its ok as long as the wind does not blow to fast. If the pole is 25 or 30 years old and you have extreme winds they will break like a match stick. Either put up stronger poles or replace them regularly. Most of the people are stuck because of the lack of fuel it does not matter if you have a generator if you cant get fuel. All gas stations should be required to have emergency back up power with free air and water to service cars. It's sad to watch, I am in Alvin the lines to get gas are a quart mile long to get into Popeyes and Whataburger. This is inexcusable the lineman cant do their work without the help of the utility companies directing the work. Poor Maintanance is the primary factor, there is not emergency management plan that is worth a damn, heads should roll. There should be a plan in place to direct the lineman crews where to work and this won't happen without a utility representatives on site directing the linemen where and when to lockout sections in order to safely work on the infrastructure.
Crazy. I moved here last year from Midwest. I will only stay for 1 more year I plan on leaving after my nursing school.

I was lucky that I was able to buy two bags of ice. My generator broke down twice. Luckily, I was able to get it running again. I was trying to work a remote job and my boss is not happy that I cannot be available due to this power outage.
Your boss sounds like a prick. Nothing you can do about the situation Houston is in.

Crazy how it was worse last month and the lights were on for everyone in the week now only 500,000 ppl lights have been restored it’s been 5 days and still 1 million ppl with out . Someone not doing there job or center point just riding clock again. .
We left Houston after the last hurricanes they mismanaged, like it or not people and their pets have become dependent on what used to be conveniences and amenities. how about apartment folks?????
@@brianwt1in my county we already ran out of regular petrol & diesel

Clearly, Texans aren’t accustomed to dealing with hurricane aftermath. I lived in Florida for 27 years (Tampa Bay) and remember some years ago going without electricity for 5 days after receiving a glance blow from a hurricane. It was absolutely miserable and frustrating.
It also got me thinking. I had to sit down and think that if just a glancing blow from a hurricane could result in such misery, what would we be facing from a direct hit from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, which is now the new norm for hurricanes in the climate change era.
Fast forward to today and I am now living once again in New England as of a week and a half ago. People living in hurricane prone areas today are going to have to make similar decisions or face the type of destruction that Hurricanes Maria and Katrina wrought on Puerto Rico and New Orleans respectively.
The power company must have a 100 year contract!this is terrible, let us pray!
I would feel more sanguine about restoration efforts if I didn't keep seeing work trucks forming convoys to knock off work by 7 p.m.
The Texas power grid SUCKS. Completely incompetent. What an embarrassment.
Wasn't general larper Abbott on vacation?!
Texas uses the most electricity out of any state in the US. Look at the statistics. Summer temperatures continue to break records. Air conditioners on constant use. These grids have yet to meet the soaring demands. There needs to be a radical change of infrastructure...yesterday. Communication limited to the outside world. Hundreds of millions of dollars in produce wasted. Thousands of lives at risk due to heat strokes, and medical facilities losing power once the backup generators go down. The one silver lining is that you do see people working together to help each other out. People do come together in times like this. I'm sure people would volunteer to help CenterPoint get this stuff back quicker.
I think we as the people of the state should do a protest for us to get a better power grid because we are just using the cheapest of parts for repairs and maintenance it's crazy how they have been getting away with this for so many years in some county's we are pretty much out of fuel at this point
Not since Sunday. Storm was Monday AM
Some lost power Monday morning, therefore, three days.
we lost power around Sunday night or Monday morning
Keep surrounding yourself with trees that fall and keep building overhead electrical grids...expect this to never end.
it aint all of our faults that there's so many trees in the area
Going on day 4 with no power.
Centerpoint should give everyone a generator. They aren’t capable of big boy stuff. Get bent. No bonuses for executives this year. Do better.

So this has been an ongoing issue for years- same news every year.
A quick Google search explains that power poles and downed powerlines are part of the issue.

Blaming the Governor is not going to help either. These people refuse to get generators. You may even claim it on your taxes for medical equipment
Category 1 storm rolls through and takes out power to 2.5 million customers? Not very impressive numbers.
I don't know why their calling it a cat 1. It was a solid two mayby a three. Lots of misinformation coming out. Their saying the tornados didn't start till Lake Jackson, but several hit our town in sargent south of their. They got the wind speed wrong too. It was a lot higher than what their saying. A guy that had a wind speed measuring device in sargent said the last reading it took before it got carried away by the wind was 120 mph.
I don't understand the anger. I understand it's hot and the feel desperate. when we have hurricanes in Florida, there's two three whole months without power because it's hard to put poles up and restore things that are broke. And most people don't want to put money into even a small generator that are in a small AC and then you have people in apartment buildings who can't have generators. But to be angry like it's supposed to be magical, that's ridiculous.
Another good reason for the state to offer solar system rebates.
Texas power grid is more fragile than their egos, but hey, you’re independent of the national grid, good for you. Now these power outages are a twice a year event. Can’t get through summer or winter without one.
