I can vouch for this. I had a similar experience when my DIP package PIC18F4550 (5V part) was fed 15V. No flames, but there was a quick pop and sizzle. What was left was a hole at the center of the IC package where i had a clear view of the silicon.
Mine was pic16f877a I feed it with 12 v I thought I put regulators but I burnt with 3 more components it was around 12 $ , and I created fire hole instead
Why are all the pins soldered together? I would like to see when it's only applied to actual power pins where there might be some protection built in. Might just go and test it myself with one of the 100 pics i have lying around
MrMac5150 A nice method to ignite a emergency fire is you find yourself lost in an inhospitable place just with a power supply, a PIC and some alligator clips.
Just needs a quick reprogramming and it'll be fine.
swiftjeff it's a software problem...
swiftjeff at worst only 1 pin got damaged
swiftjeff nonsense. all you need it to turn it off and on again.
Who taught you guys? Just download McAfee to have the virus removed.
Renita PaynoMaybe if you defragment the hard drive?
"Let me quickly desolder these shorts on this PIC"

And this is why you should never overclock. By the way, I loved that last little spark at the end.
How did it smell?
Anthony B I'll tell you after I'm done with chemotherapy.
Afrotechmods You're getting to be quite the carcinogen connoisseur!
+Afrotechmods lmao. you love to let the smoke out, dont you?
This is what happens when you get Imperial volts mixed up with metric! suh a broken system...
Everybody gangsta until the fire starts melting the solder
Looks like a good alternative to fireworks this 4th of July.
I've heard of burn-in, but that's just nuts...

ultimate ending to Frets on Fire.
Frustrated with MPLAB, XC or PickIT 3? Or just for fun?
I don't get it. What's so great about stuff burning when you put in too many electrons?
LOL that solder joints melting!!
This is why you need a current limiting resistor!
It's an awesome trick to get rid of the solder, if the pins are shorted. Thanks for that!
Damn-it. Datasheet said 15 milliamps max, not 15 amps max. Bugger. :p
Are you sure your chips are deep fried?
What is the purpose of this.
MrMac5150 I'm not sure, but if that really was only 16 volts, that's kinda scary.
MrMac5150 A nice method to ignite a emergency fire is you find yourself lost in an inhospitable place just with a power supply, a PIC and some alligator clips.
MrMac5150
Shits and giggles.
DanieleGiorgino Shits and gigles, that is the first time I have heard that one.
MrMac5150 It's all shits and giggles until somebody giggles and shits.
now THIS is how you burn a bootloader on to a microcontroller
That is one way to get rid of a bug...
Looks certainly like you had a bad connection there! Back to the drawing board! =D
Are you having a pyro streak?
@afrotechmods how exactly did you do this?
This chip takes 12v...right?
It goes to show that with some creative thinking and a little bit of effort anything is possible in the world of electronics.:-)
Oh, the electricity!
At least it was a PIC ;)
Lol, the solder melted immediately.
We got SKYNET by the balls now ! !
Take that you little Branch On Zero freak!
Random destruction is always fun
Can you please upload the files to Git? I want to try that.
So. you satisfied now
Did anybody noticed it got so hot the solder melted?
That is a lot of heat! I want to try this!!!
lol psu fan speeds up :D when chip started to melt.
Haha
It's still good, it's still good. Just a little burnt.
Poor guy :(
R.I.P.
Microcontroller is a PIC16F87 or PIC16F88...maybe???
This should be a how to video. Great way to remove solder bridges.
0:21 over and over
looks like fun!
PIC? It can be fried damn easily anyway.
"Nope im not extreme overclocking it." lol
The meanest I've ever been to a microcontroller involved a hammer. Yours is better.
Kids in Africa could have eaten that microcontroller.
JK
solder melted
hacked :D
i would've guessed reversed polarities.
Thats lit😂😂👌👌👌👌💯💯💯
Burning plastic must smell pretty good...not!
Ooooohhh... Aaaaaahhhh :P
Start with the real content already.
What are you doing. Children in Africa could have eaten it
I think you may need a heatsink for that chip.
Tried to run a blinking led at 1.21GHz.
It tried to divide by zero :)
EVERYONE makes mistakes
I'm not sure that's what the datasheet meant when it said "burn the fuses". ;)
lol amazing comment
Who else is pumped for Terminator Genisys?
Afrotechmods Whenever you're ready, dude. :-)
Afrotechmods
>le google
now i am
Afrotechmods the plot of the franchise is such a trainwreck, but IDGAF. I'm totally going to see it.
give a 30vdc 4700 mfd cap 120vac. i dare ya. lol
***** ok...go big...13,800v to a 600v cap.
That looks like a good efficient way to remove solder when you are salvaging parts for reuse.
ayo tf
Ah, it's just a software glitch, just, iron out the bug in the code and recompile it in E=mc^2, and it's all good.
Your poor alligator clips
My computer trying to run GTA V
How many electrons did you shove through it?
Meh, it's a PIC, who cares. AVR rules!
is this the recommended way of burning fuses to the pic?
+KX36 This is how I burn fuses on all microcontrollers
Did it still work?
Yes
It.... It melted the solder ._.
That solder melting...
this can be easily repaired with duct tape and few zip ties.
Nothing a lil duct tape can't fix.
Solder bridge? No sir.
Who else could almost smell this burning...........lol
Awesome
+Samy Kamkar Woah. Honoured to have you commenting on my videos!
+Afrotechmods You have cool vids! Thanks for sharing
It looks like ancient pic16f84 which I'm currently struggling with. Next time it won't work I'll show that darn chip this video.
Mhh... Seems like a legit way of decapping ICs...
Afrotechmods you're on fire, I have to try hard to make magic smoke. mostly through lack of talent. : )
We did this in highschool once. Staff weren't as happy as we were.
This does not compute. Bad day to be a chip. Enjoyed it anyway.
Good, good... PIC MCUs deserve it.
(AVR fan)
What voltage was provided
This looks like photonicinduction. :-)
I love looking at pic burn and fire smell good!
nice soldring iron
Daggum, so hot melted the solder!
Rest in pee. Went to Silicon heaven!
Yeah, burn that PIC!
That's cruel
Ooops!!!
Me: I'd like a bag of chips
Clerk: Would you like them boiled or overvolted?
Is it art?
Allah Akbar !
Thanks for providing the voltage condition that was used.
Ha ha! Now you gotta replace your alligator clips too. Love this stuff!
The other day I had noticed that Afrotechmods has more subscribers than Applied Science (Ben Krasnow).
stonent My channel has been around for much longer
GaryBlack I think all great science channels on youtube are just keep getting BETTER and BETTER.
