    Wow - thanks for taking us along. Yes the Eagle was a beautiful car - all the 60s cars looked good - no wings or gadgets just great drivers.

    If Gurney had waited one more year to launch his Eagle and stayed with Brabham in '66, he could have been world champion. He was that good.

    So this was the '66 car which never had the 3-liter Westlake in the first place. A lot of teams were really caught ill prepared for the new 3L formula and that's why many used this latest incarnation of the great CC until they could develope their own V-8/12. Lotus used the BRM H-16, Mclaren used a stock block Ford, Brabham of course used the Repco V-8 until he saw the writing on the wall and switched to DFV. 1966 was an interesting year in F-1 with so many different engine choices.

      The Repco engine that the Brabham team used was based on a production Buick engine with DOHC 16 valve heads on it.
      The BRM H-16 was a monstrosity. Basically 2 flat 8s sharing an output shaft. Upper and lower sets of 8 cylinder each had their own cooling system. Supposedly the casting drawing was misread and the engine ended weighing something ridiculous like 500lbs.
      Plus way down on power, sucked gas and had a hard time staying together.
      The Cosworth DFV saved F1.

      McLaren also tried using a 3.0L Serenissima V8, which proved to be more reliable and a lot lighter than the de-stroked Indy Ford V8, which was built by Traco Engineering. However the Serenissima was also very much down on power, being less powerful than the 2.7L CC4 used by Gurney in the 1st Eagle.

      There is no T in Weslake. Harry Weslake was the designer and builder of the engine. TG101 only ever had a 2.7 litre Coventry Climax 4 banger, which it retained through it's Castrol Canada/Al Pease and Tom Wheatcroft ownership. The only Eagle to have both a Weslake and a CC was TG 102 which had a CC installed for hillclimbing when it was in the Scuderia Filipinetti stable and driven by Herbert Mueller.

    Brilliant. And in 1966, of course, the Cosworth didn't exist and Coventry-Clima was not all that much down on the power of the early and very fragile 3-litres. It was a fascinating season to watch.

      270hp out of a 2.7L engine that was originally a 1.5L fire truck water pump motor ain't too shabby.

    VERY cool. (Don't mean to be naive, but is this sped up a bit?) I saw Rindt win US GP, Watkins Glen '69, Courage 2nd; Stewart in '72, Cevert 2nd....

    It would be a fantastic experience just to sit in the car with the engine running and blip the throttle a few times.
    The Eagle's suspension may be more compliant because it is softer sprung due to not having to handle the downforce from the wings and ground effects.

    • @philgiglio9656
      @philgiglio9656 5 років тому

      And there is NO compliance in the tires...modern F1 cars appear to use the tires for most of the springs.

    • @burdineestep4224
      @burdineestep4224 5 років тому

      Wrong Phil, treaded tires have lots of flex, sidewall squirm, tread squirm. Have driven 3 f1 cars w/treaded tires.

    • @burdineestep4224
      @burdineestep4224 5 років тому +1

      Softer sprung because tracks in those day's were not billiard table smooth. Most were public road subject to truck traffic.
